Fighting in Pro hockey is the only form of regulating dirty play and protecting the ultra skilled players. The competitive level is very serious, take out the self regulation and there will be no more exciting players to watch. Gretzky, Crosby etc wouldn't last a week, they'd be crippled and the league would be reduced to mediocrity. The drugs thing, well, whatever.

Jim Thompson came to my school today as a speaker. If done Don knew what hes been through he'd feel bad for what he said. Jim at the age of 12 started getting bad influences like drugs and alcohol ect. He had to change his whole lifestyle just because he wanted to live his dream of playing in the NHL. Jim fought because he was PAID to fight. He hated it. Hes now trying to get fighting out of the NHL because he thinks its a bad influence on kids. Don i think is wrong in this situation.

Hockey isn't like "all other team sports". Defending your teammates, creating energy with aggression, and physical intimidation is a part of sport that bonds teams together.
An easier way to look at it is "taking the god with the bad". If it wasn't for tough guys, the role of danglers and snipers wouldn't be as distinctive. Hockey is great because it provides a wide range of athletes and personalities that blend well with the game

Many have said that tough guys need to "defend players" buy beating on people who give dirty checks to fast players. The best way to defend players is to give the players who play dirty penalties and suspentions to shut them up and leave the ice filled with the good, fast, skillful players who deserve a spot on the ice. Jim Thompson came to my school today as a speaker. If done Don knew what hes been through he'd feel bad for what he said. Jim at the age of 12 started getting bad influences like drugs and alcohol ect. He had to change his whole lifestyle just because he wanted to live his dream of playing in the NHL. Jim fought because he was PAID to fight. He hated it. Hes now trying to get fighting out of the NHL because he thinks its a bad influence on kids. Don i think is wrong in this situation.

Hockey isn't like "all other team sports". Defending your teammates, creating energy with aggression, and physical intimidation is a part of sport that bonds teams together.
An easier way to look at it is "taking the god with the bad". If it wasn't for tough guys, the role of danglers and snipers wouldn't be as distinctive. Hockey is great because it provides a wide range of athletes and personalities that blend well with the game
IMO, leave the sport alone. It's great as is

Fighting should be taken out of the game but not because of this. Fighting is a stupid, and savage part of hockey. Many have said that tough guys need to "defend players" buy beating on people who give dirty checks to fast players. The best way to defend players is to give the players who play dirty penalties and suspentions to shut them up and leave the ice filled with the good, fast, skillful players who deserve a spot on the ice. In my opinion, the fights in the NHL are just like crashes in racing. It's not part of the sport but it's something people like to watch. People should focus on the athleticism of the sport instead of entertainment while sitting on the couch drinking beer.

@finnsia thatS not what Grapes is talking about, hes talking about guys who say that the players who commit suicide and take drugs are the enforces, which is NOT true, its wrong to even stereo type that. And dont even try to argue that, they are plenty of players who are going to fight, look at evender kane,hes a skilled player and still fights, fighting is part of hockey and always has been, AND dont try to argue that it causes concussions, only 9% of concussions have resulted from fights EVER

@urgrandmascar It's a very primitive tradition in the sport. Much has changed in the world while that stays behind in the stone age. And I agree with you, goons are those that start it. However I disagree with everything else. Statistics can be shaped in any form and I am sure you'll agree. If people want to watch a fight then they should watch boxing where men and womyn train themselves to fight their best instead watching to people take each other stuff off to throw a few fists a few minutes.

@finnsia i somewhat agree with what you say but not totally ... i think its pretty dumb the idea of 'pure enforcers' ,players who are at least a few steps behind the pace of the game who play 4-5 minutes a night. I think fighting has a role in the game but not goons .. i like to see it when a guy like Iginla drops the gloves or someone who plays good enough hockey to have a roster spot, it means hes playing with passion and its real, not a bunch of staged fights between a bunch of pill heads

@urgrandmascar Hockey like any other sport should be about athleticism. Once it becomes anything but that, it becomes pathetic and disgusting. Especially when loyalty starts playing a role.
