They are mic'd in a slightly different position anyway! It didn't take ten years of working in a commercial studio specialising in recording guitar music to learn that even moving the mic a tiny little bit changes the tone in immeasurable amounts!
I like the stock P10R better. I'm glad you did this comparison. I have a Bassman LTD and was thinking about these excact speakers. You just saved me lots o' money!
I use WGS speakers and love them, but there's something in the original speakers I like a little better in the clean sound. In the gained up setting I like the WGS speakers better...go figure!
If the video shows correct images from the actual recording conditions, this demonstrates only that our recorded guitar tones can be affected by either microphone placement or the actual speakers. The experiment changed two variables at once, which creates a mystery. We don't know which change caused the difference in recorded tone.
Has this shortcoming been addressed already in your replies to earlier comments? If so, it would be appropriate to add notes/pop-ups to your video. THX
the cost to benefit ratio here is too high. you can hear the WGS speakers were designed after the blue 10's. a used bassman is 600-900 bucks and you just spent that in speakers. I love the tone from each. the wgs have a little more honk to them, but i wouldn't have done that. great tone, nevertheless.
Stock ones are better. Especially if they're the blue alnicos with the small magnets -- those are great speakers. And they're not $900 for a set of them!
I like both for different reasons. They're just different. Besides, what really matters is what does it sound like in the context of a band or a recorded song, not "does this sound cool to me by itself." Guitar players... sheesh.
Also, I can't tell for sure, but when you mic the Warehouse speaker, it appears a bit further away from the center of the cone than the stock. This will also color the sound differently. I wish more emphasis was placed on the mic and placement by guitarists as well. Often times, when we're hearing one of those 'holy grail' tones on a recording, part of the tone is which mic was used and where it was placed.
Wow...for those of you who said the stock are better...I would almost bet you play with a scoop style eq. Brian...the Warehouse speakers have a much better responsive mid range...and a more distinct low end by far... how do you think the vintage 30's would sound in a Deville 212?
@Hellebender it's not true. sometimes a favourable mid range response is what we aim for, but being too obsessed with midrange is just unnecessary.
i personally think a vintage 30, while it has been called 'a speaker that gives beautiful mid range frequencies', adds a lot of shrill and ear piercing waves in a full band mix.
the WGS has more treble , would be great for heavey metal or for more distortion in general , but for specific amp such the bassman the stock speakers do the right job they are more musical in the air , very shameful that the reissue models bassman has more gain into them not like old models where its more clean and crystal .
@edgeguy99 Another option is to buy 2 or one. You don't need 4 new speakers if you're miking the amp. Anyway the stock speakers are not bad a feasible option is to search ebay for vintage (my favorite) or new 10in alnico speakers. I like warehouse speakers but their prices keep going up like the veteran 30 I bought this speaker a few years ago for $45 and now it goes for $70! He shouldn't raise his prices so much because now the hellatone speakers are right by the price of WGS. -Pk
Better, more responsive speakers typically give you more clarity, which is much more akin to turning the treble UP.
Anyway, IMO, Jensens or Jensen clones (e.g., Weber) pair up best w/ Fenders - blackface or tweed. Even my HRD sounds more Fender-y w/ a Weber. The Eminences in the Hot Rod 2s are crap, and I don't have a lot of confidence in the Celestions in the Hot Rod 3s either (but I haven't played one yet, and they can't be any worse:S).
The WGS seem to have a little sweeter highs on the semi clean setting. On 12 they give a nice tone very much like The Who song "The Seeker". I would have like to hear them on a totally clean\ greater gain setting.
alnico are less responsive ...maybe good for o.d use ...but im not sure ill spend the grand to replace them...

When you said that you cranked it to 12:00 did you mean the knob was pointing at 6 or 12?
slpplexi1969 8 months ago
@slpplexi1969 i am assuming that it was at 12 o clock because the tone would be more distorted at max volume

If I'll be honest, both sound equally bad imho!

I had this amp for about six years and sold it pretty recently. I do love my new amp, but miss the bassman. That thing broke up really nicely.

Alnico makes this amp sound more British. I think the ceramic Jenen's are closer to a classic Fender tone.

Nice sound.
$220 x4 = $880 for 4 10" speakers.
F that.
Just turn the treble down and the bass up.
