I met Col. "Bud" Anderson at 2007 EAA "Air Venture" fly in at Oshkosh. He is a true hero and friend of my brother. Buds' son, Jim, was my brothers'roomate for awhile.
Bud Anderson is the greatest P-51 Mustang fighter pilot of all time. His book "To Fly And Fight" is well worth reading. He flew with the famous 357th Fighter Group from Leiston, England. They had more aces than another unit in the 8th Air Force. Bud remains current on the P-51 and will be at the Gathering of Mustangs in Ohio this September. He is a true gentleman who has earned my highest respect.
You need to read more about aviation. Anderson was NOT the top P-51 pilot..just made it into top 10. He was NOT even in the top scoring Fighter Squadron. FG..maybe..but NOT top scoring FS. He did NOT score any records in the ETO in the P-51. And he was NOT even the 1st to do anything in the P-51.
So...where does the GREATEST..title come in?. The only thing he DID do was survive the war. Thats were his fame comes from. There were greater pilots do didnt survive the war. THEY are the heros.
If Bud Anderson and other 357th pilots "only" survived the war, what does that say about the Blue Nosers and everybody else who "only" survived the war" Anderson's excellent test work came entirely after the war! The only way to determine "the greatest" is to give two pilots 10 hours in identical airplanes, then load the guns and meet nose to nose at 15,000 feet. Whoever lands is The Greatest!
Yeah he shot down a good deal more than Yeager. That guy was only an ace by the smallest margin, but still a very competent pilot to fly that X-1 thingy. (which unfortunately was based off a british design we elected not to develop further but to give to US of A *The Horror* :O )
Very cool, but the X-1 was not based after that. Bell had already had the XS-1 past the design stages. You can see that there are things similar to eachother, but Bell did not base their design after thia aircraft. But that is cool stuff man.
