Sorry if my tone offended some, but since I've lived on the prairie most of my life, I find it incredible that people are complaining about lousy food in a place where there is abundant life all around. Plant a seed, it will grow. By the way, I read Russell Means' book when it first appeared. Loved it. But, it seems odd for him to complain about USDA food stamps and starchy junk food, while claiming to be a leader of a republic seeking international recognition. What's the explanation?

So grow your own food, plant gardens. Catch rainwater and store it in cisterns. Squash will store all winter as will many other vegetables and roots. Keep goats for milk and meat. No need to complain about the crummy, overpriced corporation rations. A dummy can grow vegetables on the plains. We had more turnip and collard greens than we could eat. We pickled cucumbers and tomatoes...wonderful during the winter...from an 8' x 12' plot of unamended Lakota soil at Omaha. Get with it.

If it were that simple wouldn't you think it would have been done already? I'm pretty sure that has been done many times but, crops die and you heard him, not many people have jobs available to them on the reservation to afford food let alone something as simple as seeds. I will hopefully get to go there and help them build something that will collect rainwater, and, provide seeds for crops. Dont bash the battered, thats not right.

Being from Oklahoma and part Indian...my grandfather took me on reservations when I was a child to visit relatives. I dont think anyone was talking about how the government gave them a piece of land which was supposed to be theirs forever (on legal binding paper) and then when gold was found the government killed and took almost everything from them,I think he was talking about how the only way to make money is to move out of the reservation because of the red tape of going through three agencies to try to ask permission to start a business only to be not granted permission over and over again.

For the natives (indians), the plan is different because if they let them life in the same system as they have been for centuries, they will live on hunting and farming without needing any green paper. "Reparations" doesn't have to be financial, nor does it imply that somebody must lose out. What the Lakotah need are reparations of their RIGHTS that were lost through fraud and betrayal. The Lakotah need reparation of their land in accordance to the treaties that the U.S. government signed.
Such reparations won't take away anything from the besieged white American. Whites and Lakotah have a common domestic enemy that we must join forces against: the Feds and the offshore banking mafia

Russell is right about the quality of food and obesity. Look at the poor people in your community and I bet that least 60% are overwieght. My family is concidered poor. My wife and I are both overwieght but the thing is we ussually only eat one normal sized meal a day. So whats making us fat? The poor quality food, soda, and lack of exercise. Also wanted to add that most food aid, at least here is 60% junk food, candy, cookies, and cakes, you get some canned goods and a package of meat.
