I like the martin better. The martin has a deep, ancient sound to it. The Taylor sounded brighter, it reminded me of the gameshow 'the price is right!'
IMHO..the Martin seems to have a little more low end, but i prefered the Taylor...oh, last time i check El Cajon is still on US soil, but i havent been there for twenty years.
i dont really no how you can compare these 2 guitars. considering the martin DR cost around £900 and the taylor big baby cost around £350 theres a 550 pound difference.
Man that Martin is fat and rich! Martin all the way in this one. I just sold my Taylor because it was too bright for my ears. Nice sound, but when you compare with a Martin, my ears almost always favor Martin.
Im a Taylor fan myself (own the GS5E model) so I might be a bit biased but both these guitars sound awful - in my opinion so don't flame me. These guitars are both built strictly for small budget and taking them on the road where you wouldn't have to worry about them getting abused or drying out. I don't know - you can't beat a Martin or Taylors full size sound.
I agree - it's a matter of personal preference. Both are quality instruments - easy to play and great sound. If you like a somewhat muted sound with a lot of bass, go with the Martin. If you like a brighter sound with less bass, go with the Taylor. I compared both at a guitar shop recently (went back twice) and ended up buying the Taylor.
The results as to which of the two is the better guitar are clearly not unanimous. Each guitar varies based on the personal liking and playing interests of the player. Having played both guitars, I can say without a strong bias toward either make that the Taylor Big Baby has a more enriched, brighter tone, whereas the Martin resonates a deeper and enhanced bassier sound. This greatly contrasts the two. Playing interests such as strumming or fingerpicking will strongly influence buyer decision.
Hope to pick up a BB today. Under $400 used. To nit pick over the neck screws is really.. well..nit picky.
The guitar is a gem. Incredible tone and unmatched playability. It's lack of physical detail adds to its charm in my opinion. Its about how an instrument aids in your artistic expression. Nothing else should be a close second.
There's countless great guitars and you know the brands and have your faves. There are few really great guitar DEALS. This is at the top of my list.
Any company that puts wood screws on there guitar necks to hold them on. Then they claim their one of the best makers on the market. LOL Need someone say more. Taylor can't come close to a Martin
You can hear another great video of the Taylor Big Baby by searching "J.S. Bach - Menuet BWV Anh. 115 Big Baby." Also check out the Taylor Guitar video "Berkeley Springs - Taylor Grand Concert 4."
The way the Taylor neck is attached to the body is considered a leap forward. Over time the neck MUST be adjusted. The Taylor neck is much easier to adjust. It's like arthroscopic knee surgery versus open surgery.
With other non-Taylor guitars, the neck wood ends with the heel block at the 14th fret, and the fingerboard extension is glued to the guitar top soundboard, but the Taylor NT neck joint is extended into a pocket precisely routed into the guitar body and top, where it is secured to the interior blocking system. This leaves the fretboard independent and unaffected by changes in the top (humidity and sound). Pros especially like this because of the Taylor is more stable in various weather.
I know both guitars - each good in their own way but both somewhat limited in sound quality and depth of tone. But of course it is a matter of personal taste and there is always a better guitar out there no matter which one you have. Personally I would recommend Collings dreadnoughts as the costly option and Freshman guitars for excellent tone and playability with really high grade tonewoods at great prices. High end sounds at low end prices.
The Taylor Big Baby costs $450 new. The Martin DR costs $1,050 new -- 133% more. So the Martin should sound better. The Big Baby is known for great playability, fingerpicking and bringing out the music. The Big Baby is a slightly-smaller 15/16 size guitar, not a full-size Taylor.
There is nothing like the Big Baby. A solid spruce top, mahogony neck, ebony fretboard, the Taylor playability, and most of the Taylor tone for less than half the price.
I own both guitars. Bought the Taylor Big Baby first and loved it. Then a year later I bought the Martin DR because I found one in perfect condition for a steal at $400! The DR is much better in my opinion. It has a nice deep low end which the big baby doesn't and clean mid and treble. I even stuck a Fishman Matrix PU in it and use it alongside my Taylor 614ce (another great guitar). That said, for the actual price difference for each guitar, I'd say buy the one you can afford.
Actually for lower end guitars, the two guitars DO have a bit of a difference in sound color, unlike what someone said earlier. With the Taylor being the first guitar we hear, the Martin sounds comparatively darker and more springy. Some may say more "woody". The Taylor appears to have a more normalized sound within that upper midrange of sonic spectrum where there is less influence of the wood.
The Big Baby (and all other Baby's) production was moved to Mexico several years ago. My brother has one from the final year of USA production and it says made in El Cajon, California inside. All new ones will be from Mexico so it pays to look inside before you buy one. If you can find a USA production model that has been hanging around for a while or has been traded in, buy that one instead of the Mexico one.
I personally after having played both over at the local Guitar Center prefer the Taylor. It has a more rich and mellow sound as opposed to the Martin which I thought sounded a bit too harsh.
I tried closing my eyes to see if there was really that much difference in the two. I really couldn't hear that much difference. Both are their prospective company's low end guitars, not made in the US, so neither of the two has great sound. Flip a coin and then go buy the one that fits your fancy.
I think the Martin has a better bass response than the Taylor. The Taylor sounds more toppy, but the Martin has a fuller sound overall. However, I'd like to hear them both fingerpicked to get a truer version of how either would sound in my hands.
A fair comparson would be a Taylor 210, since they're both laminated Rosewood. Neither Martin or Taylor are better than the other, they both have their place, and I am proud to own high end versions of both.
I'm a huge Taylor fan and it really makes me laugh that the tone on the $450 Taylor sounds just as good if not better than the $1049 Martin DR. The only thing the Martin has over the Taylor is volume, but what do you expect from a guitar that has a bigger body? Taylor rules everyone!
Can someone please explain the difference in the models for the taylor big baby (306-GB, 307-GB, BBT) because I've wanted one of these guitars but can't decide if I should get an older model or save up for the newer ones...PLEASE HELP!
The Taylor sounds bright and clear from top to bottom. The Martin sounds muddy, and the midrange and high end are nonexistent. No way would I waste the money on that thing. That particular Martin will never go up in value.
Taylor's are great but the Martin gets my vote as well. As someone else mentioned it does depend a lot on the person playing and the type of music being done.
Just for reference, a Martin DR is $1,049 at guitar center while a Taylor Big Baby is $449. Theres definately a difference in tone there, but you're talking about a $600 dollar difference.
it really depends on the type of music you play. if you play rhythm the martin is great for it's low end tones but booming bass. the taylors have bright crystal sounds with just a balanced bass to complement the tones. taylors are for flatpicking, martins are for rhythm guitar playing. both are great guitar brands.
Definitely the Martin...much better balance between highs and lows, many more of the subtle harmonics are showing up, and there's much more depth to the sound. Taylor's are good guitars, but I don't think they can hold a candle to Martins yet.
i like the taylor, there real bright sounding guitars...but theres nothing like a good martin!when i was in guitar center yesterday i played just about every martin they had, a couple taylors and a couple gibsons...martins take the cake for me...
thats because the taylyor has a much thinner body if you play like a taylor 214ce ($999) or a 612ce ($2799) you will find that the taylor has mor depth and tone than even a 50 year old well kept martin for almost the same price
and the taylor has much lower action making nailing bar chords much easier its like it almost plays itself
At the Doyle Dykes clinic he used a lot of Taylor guitars but I honestly think that the big baby sounded best. He mentioned that he used it on one of his recordings, I belive it was on Me and jesus and my old guitar. The Taylor big baby has a beautyful acoustic tone.
my dad has a Martin and its a really nice guitar i never tried a Taylor before but its sounds awesome too but for me both are awesome its like comparing a Lamborghini and a Ferrari right?
Recently sold the Taylor (eBay) Martin remains my favourite. Nice deep sound tried to go without one once lasted 3 days! What Martin does your dad have?
i think its the DX1 model how about yours? my dad probably would give it to me and by the way my dad said the older the guitar gets old the better it will sound is that true? because he said that the wood would get dryer.
Mine is the Martin DR, your dad is right basically they loosen up with time and sound better. Only if they have a solid top tho, witch the DX1 and DR have. All solid is best but expensive.
awesome! i knew it thanks i never thought that the guitar gets a better sound when it gets older and thats why vintage guitars are more expensive. So the DX1 is one of those guitars right?
About right yeah, tho the more expensive the guitar was to start with the better. All solid guitars are Martin's real expensive vintage guitars like Martin D28, D45, 00028 makes me drool just thinking about them.
tried both recently when i went to buy a new guitar, had no intention of buying a taylor but after 20 mins on it there was no doubt in my mind, for me its the taylor all day long love it love it love it.
Well i sold a Taylor 310CE hated it. Had a Martin D28 sold it and now deeply regret it. With regards to Martin and Taylor, Taylor = bright, Martin = bass. There is just somethig about a Martin. The Taylor in this video is on eBay finishes tomorrow night.
In my opinion I prefer the taylor cause I like briter sounding guitars but the Martin is well Handcrafted cause Taylors all made precisely my machines but I still like the taylor
Taylor is a small dread' and is not braced at the back which makes it louder than it should be as you can hear. The comparison is for tone. I hope as Taylor ages the bass comes out more, Anyone got an older Big Baby?
not a fair comparison since the martin is a full size hollowbody..the big baby is a bit smaller..nonetheless, martin's are known for their warmth and bassy tone while taylor's are known for their sweet mids..i have a big baby and i like the volume it makes for its small body and the tone is beatiful..i am looking for a full body or a jumbo to compliment it.
man, i love and respect taylors quality, but as for sound, 9 times out of 10 i prefer martins

i bought the taylor, i paid £329 for it and since found i could have got it a lot cheaper, never mind its a lovely guitar.
RayRuffles 4 years ago
£299 at coda music so still a good price. I traded in local for mine, since sold it on eBay.

i played both of these recently when i went to buy a new guitar and could not put the taylor down, absolutly love it, both nice though, good vid.

my dad has a Martin and its a really nice guitar i never tried a Taylor before but its sounds awesome too but for me both are awesome its like comparing a Lamborghini and a Ferrari right?
spiderman7000 4 years ago
Recently sold the Taylor (eBay) Martin remains my favourite. Nice deep sound tried to go without one once lasted 3 days! What Martin does your dad have?
DEK431 4 years ago
i think its the DX1 model how about yours? my dad probably would give it to me and by the way my dad said the older the guitar gets old the better it will sound is that true? because he said that the wood would get dryer.
spiderman7000 4 years ago
Mine is the Martin DR, your dad is right basically they loosen up with time and sound better. Only if they have a solid top tho, witch the DX1 and DR have. All solid is best but expensive.
DEK431 4 years ago
awesome! i knew it thanks i never thought that the guitar gets a better sound when it gets older and thats why vintage guitars are more expensive. So the DX1 is one of those guitars right?
spiderman7000 4 years ago
About right yeah, tho the more expensive the guitar was to start with the better. All solid guitars are Martin's real expensive vintage guitars like Martin D28, D45, 00028 makes me drool just thinking about them.
DEK431 4 years ago
tried both recently when i went to buy a new guitar, had no intention of buying a taylor but after 20 mins on it there was no doubt in my mind, for me its the taylor all day long love it love it love it.

How would the Martin HD28V be compared to with a taylor of same/close price?
omar888 4 years ago
Well i sold a Taylor 310CE hated it. Had a Martin D28 sold it and now deeply regret it. With regards to Martin and Taylor, Taylor = bright, Martin = bass. There is just somethig about a Martin. The Taylor in this video is on eBay finishes tomorrow night.
DEK431 4 years ago
wich costs more and whats the prices approximately?
carnerd300kw 4 years ago
The Martin is around double the price of the Taylor, to give a rough guide.
DEK431 4 years ago
The taylor is a amazing guitar. but this video doesn't to it any good with just chords. YOU should try picking and not chords.
Dom40610 4 years ago
I agree but I'm not a great picker unfortunately.
DEK431 4 years ago
In my opinion I prefer the taylor cause I like briter sounding guitars but the Martin is well Handcrafted cause Taylors all made precisely my machines but I still like the taylor
lliicckk 4 years ago
i don't think these are fair comparisons as the Taylor is an economy guitar & the D28 & DR are well over a grand?
apoisonoussymphony 4 years ago
Taylor is a small dread' and is not braced at the back which makes it louder than it should be as you can hear. The comparison is for tone. I hope as Taylor ages the bass comes out more, Anyone got an older Big Baby?
DEK431 4 years ago
not a fair comparison since the martin is a full size hollowbody..the big baby is a bit smaller..nonetheless, martin's are known for their warmth and bassy tone while taylor's are known for their sweet mids..i have a big baby and i like the volume it makes for its small body and the tone is beatiful..i am looking for a full body or a jumbo to compliment it.

i meant a full size "dreadnaught"
mo28mabini 4 years ago
I recommend the Martin DR. Not too expensive and beautiful sound. Last guitar was Martin D28 and DR is more balanced D28 was very bass heavy.
DEK431 4 years ago
Martin sounds better to me.
d6njm 4 years ago
The recording doesn't give the guitars justice, Martin is my favorite.
DEK431 4 years ago
Taylor sounds bright, Marin has bass I'd say i prefer the Martin!!
