Maybe it's not so much the acting here that I hate but the writing.... this is horrendous! this is the most implausible, backwards, boneheaded story ever!
The underacting is funny... shouldn't they be more emotional? Its almost like the actors are purposely sabotaging the scene as if they are thinking "this is the most retarded storyline ever!"
Geez....I'd rather Thom than Cane at least I can understand what Philip is saying unlike Cane talking all stupid. Besides my mom has been watching this show FOREVER and she was telling me about when Philip's death happened. And she said they both made that poor boy out of his mind. So there's no way in hell Katherine and Jill would have been supported of him being gay cause they were fighting over him from the beginning. Give me a break they stupid.
The fact that Y & R chose to explain Phillip's death as him running away 20 years ago because he as gay is another way to insult gay people. Gay people do not fake their death and leave their families because they are gay. Phillip added insult to injury to justify his actions.
Interesting to me that Thom Bierdz is an out gay actor, yet he brings no depth or emotion to these scenes. Glad he's an out working actor, but he sure could use an acting coach if he's going to get in the game again.
Back in 1976 a woman named Joann Curtis, an overweight housewife was being abused by her husband..and she was befriended by Kay..soon Joann became self assertive, attractive and Kay had feelings for her (she'd lost her husband in a car accident a year before)..and started buying Joanne gifts..it was her son Brock who told her what she was feeling was unnatural and wrong..which was William Bell's way of truncating the story due to overwhelming negativity from viewers..
@barbidoll0 I'm not smoking anything, plus that's rude. Kay became very fond of a obessed woman named Joanne, I believe. It was around 1976 or so. I read this infomation. Bill Bell got so much hate mail on the on the storyline that he quickly ended it before it got on the way.
@coolwafferman Oh okay, my bad. That's why I can't recall or fathem such a thing. It happened before I was even thought of. I didn't come along till '84.
@barbidoll0 I didn't come along until '89. However, I'm a huge fan of the first 10 years of "Y&R". I even made a video showing pictures and cast from the first 10 years of the show.
Jill tells Phillip that he didn't even give them a chance. Katherine says that Phillip could have helped them learn to accept him being gay. Maybe, but would they have WANTED to learn to accept it? Was he supposed to FORCE them to?
Phillip could have said,"Oh come on? Can both of you honestly look me in the eye and tell me that back then, you would have WANTED to learn to accept this?"
Jill and Katherine don't say anything knowing that they can't say yes.
This is so stupid, I don't think even a agy man would leave his child just because he was gay! This story line pissed me off and i don't even watch theshow anymore, and I haven't since phillip'sdeath...
omg this guy is back????? i watched this in early 80s and this young buck showed up as jill and mr chanclers son god and he left the show due to some personal problem omg he is back i need to start watching this show
Tired of all this "I'm gay" stuff on TV. Sick of it. TV has been ruined because of it. Time to get out the DVDs of TV shows up to this point and live in that era because this era is just nuts.
Ok so he admit he is gay but the real question is why did Phillip marry Nina in the first place if he knew he is gay? Why did he come back then after all these years?
Actually, this scene and the best use of history is one of the reasons why THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS is #1. This wouldn't have worked with any other actor besides this one and the grief with everyone's emotions speaks volumes. Philip III was selfish then as he is now. Really great scene.
For all who don't know, Thom Meinz, the actor who plays Phillip III really is gay in real life. Thom already knew he was gay when he played Phillip III back in the 80's. Part of the reason that Y&R didn't make Phillip gay back then was because Thom had not yet revealed it to anyone. Thom kept it a secret for pretty much the same reasons Phillip did. Many gays and lesbians are afraid to reveal it at first because of how others will take it or look at them. But once they do, they feel much better.
P3 is a huge a-hole. Him and Nina can go fall in a ditch. Nina is so annoying and the blaming of Cane for every little thing... Jesus. Cane was wrong but he is not responsible for all her issues. P3 is the one who left his son(which is my grand issue and him thinking he has to hide his sexuality doesn't make leaving his son ok) and chose to say gone.
I may not be the biggest Cane fan but I'm starting to like him and while wrong I respect him miles more than P3. At least he's truly sorry, imo.
i can't stand nina. i'm happy everyone knows the truth. she's doesn't have the right to blame cane for her life. she needs to look at mirror before she opens her mouth
The rewrite is redicilous. A totally 180 on this family. Jill I feel for; 1st she was Kays daughter and not. She found her son not. No dead son corps and then his alive...I'd end up in hospital myself or get the fuck out of town to somewhere normal -Australia maybe lol!
I have no problem with Phillip being gay. What I have a problem with is him being as ass. Lot of men are hiding and a lot of men come out but faking your own death because of your gay is completely stupid. He should have found the courage to be who he was and what he did was horrible.
No Phillip its not all about you, it was about your son who you ditch and left behind for 20 years. You are nothing more then a deadbeat horrible person.
I agree with all parties. One, Katherine and Jill WOULD have had a problem with him being gay. Two, Phillip (even if he doesn't realize it) WAS punishing them for their inability to accept im (and people have to remember that he left in '89 - and it was NOT a time in our society to be gay - it is even hard for men and women in society now).
I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with having another gay character on the show. I just wish that it had been Chance rather than Phillip. It would have been so much neater, not as much history to rewrite. Plus, John Driscoll is just plain hotter than Thom Bierdz, imo, and I would much rather watch him get it on with Rafe, or Adam, or whoever.
the gay spin on things makes no sense to me at all. i was a little girl but i remember it all very well. he was in love with cricket, there was no faking it, there was no inner longing to be straight because he was straight. i remember routing for nina to finally win him over from cricket because she wanted him so badly. i was so impressed even as a child with that sl. the gay spin now is rewriting history yet again. i get him not being the man they wanted him to be but phillip gay? no way!
Thom Bierdz the actor who plays Phillip is openly gay in real life. He was asked back then not to come out while he was on the show. Alot of gay men try to be straight, and have relationships with women. Both Phillip's romance with Cricket and marriage to Nina could happen to any gay guy back then. Infact, there are married men right now that are living through the same thing.
As true as it is that many gay men put up a front, this is still a rewrite. The writers had no intentions of making Phillip gay in the 80's. But this isn't the first time the writers have rewritten Y&R history, You just have to roll with it.
So very happy Thom is back and looking forward to seeing how Y&R plays out the fact that Philip is gay. If they find Philip a hot boyfriend, maybe Y&R can have the next great gay couple on TV besides Luke and Noah from ATWT.
Phillip made things a hell of alot worse by trying to fix things. Katherine is right. He took the cowards way out by running away, and sending that pathetic Cain Ashby could not fix things. He just made things much worse. He should had just came out about who he was from the begining, because either way he was going to cause tremendous pain. Oh man, to be Phillip and to have them kind of alternatives had to had really sucked for him too. I feel bad for all of them.
i agree with u and kay and jill. he is a coward. what he did is create an open wound and let it get infected, then he placed a bandage over it and just as the wound is healing he removes the bandage to let it get infected again. what's the point? he didnt make things better by bring them cane, he brought more pain into their lives. i feel very little sympathy for him, i see him him as a selfish self=absorbed coward.
I don't excuse faking your own death. But the reason Nina understands is that she KNEW Philip didn't love her and wasn't attracted to her when she tricked him into sleeping with her and got pregnant. She knew it then. Phillip is completely right that Jill and Kay would NOT have accepted his being gay back when he was a teen. There is NO WAY Jill Abbot would have been ok with having a gay son.
20s later it's a different. People are a lot more comfortable with openly gay family members.
The situation 20 years ago was pretty bad. When you're a gay teen in a straight world, it's overwhelming. You are expected to be someone you are not, and there's no one you can talk to. As for Nina, I know she loved him, but she was was pretty conniving back then, because she knew he was just not that into her.
If it would have kept Nina from marrying Phillip, She may have jumped on board with the gay thing. (Now if Victor was the parent...)
LMAO @ "Now if Victor was the parent". I can't wait for him to find out about Adam. He'll probably be more ticked off about him being "gay" than gaslighting Ashley :-)
If you think Phillip had a bad time, Adam is going to learn the true definition of hell when Victor finds out everything that his son has been up to. It would be delicious if Adam started to enjoy all that good lovin' he's getting from Rafe. I still can't believe he took it that far.
It will look all wrong-come on P3 is I'm sure he's fourty something and Rafe twenty something. But I'm not judging on age at all though it's a point about it.They wouldn't match just like you said.
Nina has a really irrational hate for Cane. It almost seems as if she blames Cane for Phil's deception. Of course, what Cane did was wrong, but Phil orchestrated the whole thing! We can forgive Phil, but not Cane. Come on!!!
I notied that too, she seems so willing to give Phillip the benefit of the doubt but won't even consider doing the same for Cane. And Cane is just the sweetest (and hottest) guy, he did make a huge mistake but he's not a bad person.
Nina's love for Phillip was unconditional. To her he was her first true love. When she was younger, she would have done anything for him, including putting up with how horribly Jill and Kay treated her. Even when she thought he was dead, her loyalty never wavered. As hurt as she is now, she's still willing stand by him. Cane did con an entire grieving family. Even if his motives were noble. And Nina's not emotionally invested in Cane.
@carmtrav I know, Phillip keeps telling them to blame him not Cane, after all it was his idea not Cane's. It's like they (especially Nina) want to hold Cane SOLELY responsible.
Did he say he didn't do anything wrong? I didn't see that? I just think he knows the past is the past and there's nothing he can do about it now accept try to move on from this moment and hope Kay and Jill will find a way to forgive him. Should he be groveling at their feet? Neither Kay, nor Jill and certainly not Nina are saints. I think he sounds very reasonable. He's had 20 to try to make peace with what he's done. If you can't forgive yourself you might as well be dead...
The only thing that didn't really jive to me is that he was aggresively pursing Cricket for a while there. I understand if a guy has the gf for a cover but he genuinely seemed to have it bad for Christine back in the day
When you're gay, you can make yourself want to have those feelings, but it's not going to erase who you are. Men have gotten in relationships and even marriages praying that they would truly change, but in the end, it never really works. Everyone gets hurt.
I know, I had a neighbor who had two teenage children with a woman he was married to for 14 years until he left her for a guy named Dan! It's not right but it happens.
True, it happens. but so many people grew up @ a time where they couldn't be honest about their sexuality. Today there's no need to hide in a closet. Kids have the courage not to lie, and society has adopted healthier attitudes. There's still a long way to go, but it's better than it was 20years ago.
Philip loved Cricket as much as he could love any woman. I don't think it was about desire. I remember those scenes and could totally believe he was gay then. Cricket was safe. If he didn't believe he could be out (as a young man) I could see wanting to be with someone who was just "good" and nurturing and kind and pretty. Gay teens are often so desperate to feel wanted/loved and don't feel they ever will be (not like now). Maybe obsessing over Cricket gave him an outlet for those feelings.
This is a very real storyline. Alot of married women like Nina discover that their husbands are gay and they are usually very supportive. They are very human characters.
Nina is funny calling Cane some cheap imitation of P3. Would this be the P3 who ochestrated his death and let his son grow for 20yrs without a father. Hmmn, let me think......
These scenes are really wonderful. But I want Jill to have ONE SCENE along with her CHILD. I think it's ridiculous that Katherine is leading the scenes here, her child didn't fake his death, Jill's did!
Jill was never a good mother to Phillip even though she loved him. After he was born, Catherine stripped her of everything, and she was a struggling single mother. When she married John Abbott, she sent him away to boarding school for years. Phillip never felt loved by his mother, and they were never close. Catherine was obsessed with him for years, and always reached out to him. There was more of a bond w/ Kay than Jill.
I'm so pleased that Jill didn't snap Phillip's head off. The rage is not about his sexuality, but about the 20 years of grieving, and 2 years of being conned by Cane. I love Phillip, but I have to agree with the rest of them on this. I can understand his motives, but he put them through hell 10 times over.
I totally agree but I don't think he expects them to just forgive him. I think he figures he'll just take the hits he deserves and try to win back there trust.
I know folks think the worse thing in the world is to leave your kid but I think if you KNOW you can't deal, better that you get the hell out and deal with your issues then spend 20 resenting your own kid and possible taking it out on him/her. Nina wanted to get pregnant. She made a conscious choice to "trap" Philip and she did.

@carmtrav I know, Phillip keeps telling them to blame him not Cane, after all it was his idea not Cane's. It's like they (especially Nina) want to hold Cane SOLELY responsible.

Phllip is such a wimp. He feels he didnt do anything wrong. wth?
lovely622 2 years ago 3

It's not right but it happens.
fangal09 2 years ago

@pregiafo LOL that's too funny but Nina must still love Phillip :D

The guy that plays Phillip is a terrible actor... he really brought down the scenes.

Yeah and if you can find clips from back in the day you'll see he wasn't any better in the 80's

this s/l about Phillip being gay is absurd!! just what Y&R needs a gay s/l....this show is going down quickly..

i wont say its going down the drain, its still the best daytime show (i watch a few). but i do agree that phillip III being gay is ridiculous.

I can understand his motives, but he put them through hell 10 times over.
olnightstar69 2 years ago
I totally agree but I don't think he expects them to just forgive him. I think he figures he'll just take the hits he deserves and try to win back there trust.
I know folks think the worse thing in the world is to leave your kid but I think if you KNOW you can't deal, better that you get the hell out and deal with your issues then spend 20 resenting your own kid and possible taking it out on him/her. Nina wanted to get pregnant. She made a conscious choice to "trap" Philip and she did.
