OMG! Groucho could twitch his coat-tails and embody a fun mood. Or put his hands on his hips and we're there with him in the fun of the piece. What a man! What a performer! Everyone should watch the whole interview with Dick Cavett and watch everything they can with him in it because it's true....they only come around once. Thanks, Groucho!
I make skits that are chock-full of puns and one-liners, please take a look and let me know what you think! I'm a huge fan of The Marx Brothers and want to reach out to an audience who likes that sense of humor
This is still a fun performance, 30 years after he did it in the movie At the Circus. I have to think though that it was bittersweet for Groucho to do bits like this after Chico and Harpo had died. Go back and watch the clip from At the Circus - it's still primarily Groucho singing, but Harpo and Chico are in the background doing their thing. The brothers were a true comedy team, with 3 distinct characters playing off each other so well.
Groucho's last great appearances were in the late 60s and early 70s on The Dick Cavett Show, like this one in 1969. Cavett knew all about The Marx Brothers, asked intelligent questions, treated Groucho with respect and got out of the way and let him perform. All Marx Brothers fans are eternally grateful to Mr. Cavett for preserving these videotapes and allowing us to see Groucho these final times....still witty and funny at 80!
@Lampshade51 Groucho died just a week or so after Elvis Presley and I know that Cavett was very upset that Groucho's death was overshadowed by Elvis'. If you want to read a wonderful book about the personal Groucho, try to find "Son of Groucho' written by his son, Arthur Marx. I am not sure if it still in print. (might be available on Amazon)
@kyrastube AND before someone start screaming and calling me jew-hater and such, let me just say that I AM NOT. I am just very interested in languages and therefor also the origins of accents
@kyrastube I don't know a lot about New York accents, but the way he says "learn" (almost like "loyrn") is distinctly New-York accent. Here in the midwest, the word sounds like its German cognate "lern". (Lurn)
This is the type of entertainment that has almost died out: the type that keeps us laughing with the innuendos without actually explicitly making any.
Great song :DD Just found out about this because I read some of Don Rosa's old Scrooge McDuck comics and Donald was constantly singing this song in one of them. Great. <3
Performers in the old days kept working regardless of sickness until they left us. People now whine if they get a hangnail. Groucho may have felt horrible here but he never let us know. I feel sorry for the world when something like this got 21 dislikes. Old, sick, slowing down, but still Groucho Marx. Well done, sir! Comedians today wish they were this good.
I was lucky to have seen some reruns of Groucho senoir doing stuff like this and when looking back at his early works with his brothers, he was incredible.
Seems that as he got older, he went from incredible to precious...
and yes, you can see the age roll back as he gets farther into Lydia!
what a sweet litte old man he grew up to be. I want him as my grandpa! the one living grandpa I have (the only living grandparent I have left in fact) is great and dont want him replaced, but he can take the other grandpas place.... if groucho was alive still that is... hrm, strange comment I know... :P
@JJAB91 Jah, thereabouts. Pneumonia. But I don't know the cause of the apparently rapid transformation that took place after he quit making movies. Maybe it was nutty spouses, maybe it was child rearing, maybe it was just a front. I dunno.
Just freakin awesome. At the Circus was one of the worst movies the Marx Bros did, but this song was one of the best Groucho Marx songs. It's tragic that Thalberg died so young. Groucho was at his peak when he did this number on film, and he was surrounded by terrible writing, acting and directing.

How many times was Groucho Marx on the dick cavett show because imdb says twice but when you go through youtube you find what appears to be him on at least six or so times.
If I understand correctly, the show this came from was like an entire hour and a half with Groucho - a half an hour over the allotted time of the show!
i first heard this song a few years ago when i saw PHILIDELPHIA STORY, then Muppet Show DVD (Henson's personal fav song) and then this. All the times, I laugh.
'For two bits she will do a mazurka and jazz, with a view of Niagara that nobody has,,,,,and on a clear day you can see Alcatraz;you can learn a lot from Lydia.
La la la, La la la." I would love to have a Lydia.Only Groucho was good enough to get one, though, and get rid of her!
The Marx Brothers childhood home in New York is in danger of demolition.
Please go to the MarxBrothersPlace You Tube channel to see a video where "Harpo" tells you how you can help by signing two petitions and sending an email cut and paste letter to the powers that be.
Groucho was in the hospital with pneumonia, and a nurse came in with a thermometer. Groucho said "What are you going to do with that? She responded "I am going to see if you have a temperature". Groucho replied "silly girl everyone has a temperature", he died shortly after.
Groucho appeared quite a few times on Dick Cavett's great show, but this one is the most compelling. Watch the whole thing, if you can find it. VERY funny.

I look at Stevie Wonder as a FAR more serious musician than the Pelvis. Stevie may be a little overweight moving into later middle age (can't verify that, don't have any new pics of him). But there's one thing about Stevie: I can almost guarantee you he's not the quasi-talented, fat-butt, drug-taking, womanizing piece of work that Elvis was!!! Stevie, I'm afraid has more talent in his pinkie then Elvis had in his whole body. All Elvis could do was sing. So can I. Big deal.
Stevie has kept busy in the music business his WHOLE career. Elvis WASTED the last 16-or-so years of his life making crappy movies, eating Twinkies, taking drugs, nailing any woman that moved, and, in, the end, dying on the toilet, VERY symbolic of the last 80% of his musical career!! Elvis' only good period was until he got drafted. After that he was just schmutz. Musically.
Anyone else see how he seems to get more and more into it and almost younger and younger as the song goes on?
Shalom to you, Grouch. I hope you and Harpo and Chico are up there laughing it up with Abbot and Costello and Laurel and Hardy and Chaplin and Moe and Curly and Larry and all the other greats.
After all, God may take the form of a man up there, maybe not- but I'm sure he wouldn't mind a laugh or two that only those greats can deliver.
what they don't show you in this version is Dick Cavette tries to almost slide himself into requesting this song by asking about Groucho's musical career and Groucho intrupts him and ask's Cavette if he wants to hear Lydia. Just goes to show you what a performer Groucho was, he knew exactly what the people want
99% percent of the individuals billed as comedians today don't have a trace of the wit, versatility, and timeless charm that Groucho and his brothers had.
I'll have to admit, anytime I hear of girl named Lydia, whether in the news, entertainment, sports, etc. my mental "record player" kicks in with Groucho singing that song.
Yes, he is. The 31st anniversary of his passing will be this Tuesday. Do you know, the announcement of his passing got little to no media attention? Wanna know why? That was the same week that everybody was buzzing about some hip-swiveling drug-taking, seriously overweight, one-time "king of rock n' roll" passing away. What was his name again?? .....Oh, yes, Elvis Presley. His death COMPLETELY overshadowed Groucho's 3 days later.
I don't agree with people who say there is no good comedy around anymore, there is. Most shows on TV unfortunately have actors not comedians in comedy parts, but if you look for great comedy you'll find it.
Groucho Marx, Charlie Chaplin, Eric Morecambe, Peter Cook, Ronnie Barker, John Cleese, Laurel and Hardy, Spike Milligan. The greatest comedians of all time, and all bar one are no longer with us, thankfully their work has been saved and thanks for the internet so we can all access it.
The one the only GROUCHO! I nearly fell off of my chair...haven't seen this in years!!! LOL. I just love the hat Groucho is wearing. Silly. Courageous.
Oh, compared to some of today's blue hacks, Groucho could be considered quite "clean", but if you go back and pay attention, he could let slip with a few sly zingers that probably gave the Hayes Office conniptions...
Of course the thing about this being "clean" is that it is very suggestive. For example, when he lifts his leg, you know exactly where the tattoo is of "Washington Crossing the Delaware."
@thefools Yeah, The schoking thing is he was a smoker and Insominiac and yet outlived, age wise, four of his brothers, and literally outlived Chico by 16 yeras, even though Chico was only two yeras older than him. Well doen to the man.
@velvetsnape its so sweet seeing it. Have you watched him recieving the honorary oscar? (im sure i spelled half those words wrong lol) I cried when I watched that.
Talent Something that is not required much anymore. Watch TV today and you can see that comment is so very, and so sadly true. I was lucky to see all of the greats on TV, now what do people have? Thank goodness for youtube and I can see all the greats and not have to be told when something or someone id funny.
You are mature. You can be an example to those around you who blindly follow whatever stupid celebrity is "in" at the moment. There are lots of good kids like yourself out there. I wish you well. :D
I really miss the Marx brothers. Talented and they didn't have coke up thier nose, calling women hos. I feel bad for kids today. They get a steady diet of GARBAGE!Garbage in...garbage out.
Someone once said... "Groucho was the one person that most needed to have a Groucho Marx, and he was the only one in the world that couldn't have one." Thank God we and generations to come will have Groucho. Thank you Groucho.
Is this on the Jack Paar show? Three unbelievable wits mentioned herewith: Groucho, Dick Cavett, and Jack Paar. There is some good talent around these days, of course, but these are huge acts to follow.
Who today has the wit and charm to write a song like this now? Something about a waltz that puts you into the dream...and the way the chorus voices come in and make it shine....La la laaaa, la la laa... Well, Tom Waits could write as good as this....thank you groucho, for reminding us the best stuff remains the best!
Two Lydias with blue eyes one with Hazel. I wonder how many more Lydias there are out there. Just out of intresrest..What color is her hair? You don't have to say if you don't want.
god i hate my name now ........;-P

Grouch = comic genius
the end.
wintermoon1939 3 years ago
what they don't show you in this version is Dick Cavette tries to almost slide himself into requesting this song by asking about Groucho's musical career and Groucho intrupts him and ask's Cavette if he wants to hear Lydia. Just goes to show you what a performer Groucho was, he knew exactly what the people want
ukemanchris 3 years ago
So did Cavett - it's no coincidence that the band had the full arrangement of the song before Groucho sang it.
garyokee 3 years ago
99% percent of the individuals billed as comedians today don't have a trace of the wit, versatility, and timeless charm that Groucho and his brothers had.
Freethinker82 3 years ago 9
I'll have to admit, anytime I hear of girl named Lydia, whether in the news, entertainment, sports, etc. my mental "record player" kicks in with Groucho singing that song.
He was a great entertainer, that Julius Marx.
34fitz 3 years ago 4
Yes. he. was.
Don't know if it was commented on, but I believe he was in his 80s in this clip!! (Late 70s anyway!)

R.I.P. Groucho you are truly missed
dasboot211221 3 years ago 5
Ah, well. I miss Groucho a lot.
Elvis, not as much.

Silly. Courageous.
yardleyaloe 3 years ago 5
Oh, compared to some of today's blue hacks, Groucho could be considered quite "clean", but if you go back and pay attention, he could let slip with a few sly zingers that probably gave the Hayes Office conniptions...
Filmwolf02 3 years ago 2
A true legend
htuomnom 3 years ago 2
Yes he was, as well as his brothers.
RickJ32 3 years ago 2
Of course the thing about this being "clean" is that it is very suggestive. For example, when he lifts his leg, you know exactly where the tattoo is of "Washington Crossing the Delaware."
butcherboy2008 3 years ago
Omg, I was trying hard not to cry. That was awesome seeing him revise that just five years before he died : (
velvetsnape 3 years ago 8
he died in 1977 so more like 7 or 8 years. that's not bad.
thefools 3 years ago
@thefools Yeah, The schoking thing is he was a smoker and Insominiac and yet outlived, age wise, four of his brothers, and literally outlived Chico by 16 yeras, even though Chico was only two yeras older than him. Well doen to the man.
kylecrazyford 1 year ago
@velvetsnape its so sweet seeing it. Have you watched him recieving the honorary oscar? (im sure i spelled half those words wrong lol) I cried when I watched that.

Talent Something that is not required much anymore. Watch TV today and you can see that comment is so very, and so sadly true. I was lucky to see all of the greats on TV, now what do people have? Thank goodness for youtube and I can see all the greats and not have to be told when something or someone id funny.

You're right, 224clb22...
I'm sick of seeing kids in my high school being influenced by the wrong kind of people.
God Bless The Marx Brothers...
CornholioTheGreat 3 years ago 6
You are mature. You can be an example to those around you who blindly follow whatever stupid celebrity is "in" at the moment. There are lots of good kids like yourself out there. I wish you well. :D
224clb22 3 years ago 2
I wish you well also.
CornholioTheGreat 3 years ago 2
I really miss the Marx brothers. Talented and they didn't have coke up thier nose, calling women hos. I feel bad for kids today. They get a steady diet of GARBAGE!Garbage in...garbage out.
224clb22 3 years ago 9
because parents of yesterday started using TV to babysit their kids. So in the end is the result of kids educating kids, but yes i completly agree.

Someone once said... "Groucho was the one person that most needed to have a Groucho Marx, and he was the only one in the world that couldn't have one." Thank God we and generations to come will have Groucho. Thank you Groucho.
dispatcher484 4 years ago 2
dick cavett said that.
thefools 4 years ago
Is this on the Jack Paar show? Three unbelievable wits mentioned herewith: Groucho, Dick Cavett, and Jack Paar. There is some good talent around these days, of course, but these are huge acts to follow.
tossmeacarrot 4 years ago 3
Are you mad? How can you compare the great Groucho Marx with a over-rated and untalented turd like Tom Waits??
Tom Waits sucks and people are afraid to admit it... Lol!!!!!
zachNewYork 4 years ago
I saw this when it aired in 1969 and have never forgotten it. Glad to see it again.
JohnRinNoHo 4 years ago
Who today has the wit and charm to write a song like this now? Something about a waltz that puts you into the dream...and the way the chorus voices come in and make it shine....La la laaaa, la la laa... Well, Tom Waits could write as good as this....thank you groucho, for reminding us the best stuff remains the best!
