Dude, I eat Phal. The next time you have one. Ask the chef to make it with extra coriander. And have it with boiled rice. Trust me, you will taste the curry, as the boiled rice kills some of the chili pain and allows the coriander and garlic flavor to come through.
I make my own using naga chillies and I love it. It's nice with onion and mint salad, mint and garlic raita, and mango chutney - with a portion of onion bhajis and pilau rice......
A number of studies have claimed that the reaction of pain receptors to the hotter ingredients in curries, even Korma, leads to the body's release of endorphins and combined with the complex sensory reaction to the variety of spices and flavours, a natural high is achieved that causes subsequent cravings, often followed by a desire to move on to hotter curries. (From Wikipedia.)
A Phal is fairly hot, or so I thought. A few months back I went up to Glasgow to pick something up and ended up at a curry place, a bit much bravado led me to order a "Meggaloo" (sp?) hot doesn't describe it, they only let you eat in and order it for health and saftey reasons (apparently someone had a heart attack eating one)
Never again, I got a quater through and actually got a certificate and bloodshot eyes for getting that far. Wasn't hungry again for a few days either.
Damn! I knew a guy who would always go to new Indian and Thai restaurants, ask what the spiciest item on the menu is, and then tell them to make it as spicy as they could. He said it was like a spiritual experience trying to get through each meal. LOL!
Hahahaha dude. Some people sit on poles in the desert, others hang themselves on hooks, still others bury themselves in the dirt for days on end. You eat nuclear curry. If I were after nirvana, I think I'd prefer the hooks.
Just so you know: Saffron is a drug. It is a rather powerful sedative, in large quantities. If you eat a couple Indian dishes loaded with Saffron (They call it Mellow Yellow) and wash it down with a couple glasses of wine, you can get truly intoxicated by it. Give it a try some time.
I've never liked spicy food. To me it gets to a point where the taste itself kinda dissapears and it's nothing but hot. It's just uncomfortable and i even felt sick once cause it was too hot.
Great for you though. You have something you like that much :)
Indian food is THE SHIT!!! Personal fav would have to be be paneer masala, extra spicy....lots of naan, maybe a prantha or two, and finished off with some gulab jamun.
No matter what you do, I always enjoy your vids. I've had very spicy Indian food, but my favorite very spicy food is Thai. Actually my favorite non-spicy food is Thai too.
When I was growing up, we had this Indian restaurant in my home town and it seemed as if half the people I knew had their own food poisoning story from that place. One guy in particular had gotten food poisoning there on three separate occasions.
(I know, why did the idiot keep going back?)
The place was eventually shut down, but even so I must have developed a direct line between Indian food and food poisoning in my brain, because I never in my life had the slightest urge to try Indian food.
i miss pani puri!! indain food is my top 2 favs!!! the best in the world! but there still isn't anything like mamma's cookin', have to have my chicken fried steak!!
i had to work my way up to a Phal. i had been a Madras lover for years, which is similar in flavour but not as hot as a Phal. the flavour is so good i can't describe it!
I don't believe I've ever tried Chicken Phal. I definitely need to try it - I wonder if there is a restaurant in Copenhagen which makes it authentically. Otherwise it gotta be next time I'm in the UK.
even here in the UK it usually isn't on the menu, but if you ask them most resturaunts i've been to will make you one, only after warning you 3 or 4 times about how hot it is...
there's a place round the corner from me that put a full 200 gram jar of pickled chillis into their vindaloo. it takes my head off every time. there's more chillis than meat.
when i lived in california i didn't like mexican food precisely because it is spicy and hot. i still don't favour Mexican food, cos the emphasis is on HOT instead of spicy.
Indian hot is a result of the spiciness, the spices outweigh the hotness, but as you can see, hot is hot.
thought it'd be nice to show a very natural side of me, rather than what i think.
with all the YT drama of late, i thought it would be good to keep it very real. got some 'unreal' vids coming soon, so...
LOL... I will be in the UK during August. We should meet up for one of those and a beer! I love spicy food too. The hottest meal I have ever had was a Thai shrimp salad. I am usually not especially bothered by the heat (my favorite snack is popcorn with parmesan cheese and cayenne pepper), but that time it took me 3 beers, a pitcher of water and (finally) a glass of milk and half n half to get through it...
Fahl are fucking awesome. When i had my first one the guys at the restaurant said if we finish it all we'd get 20% off. We finished but fuck me was it a chore. My earls blocked up my eyes watered etc
The next day I screamed in agony and had ice cubes up my ass LOL
i have friends who insist that i'll never be able to appraciate less spicy curries cos i'm so used to Phal's, but i like madras, korma, jalfreizi, and vindaloo (the latter not as hot as a Phal, but still fuckin hot).
I haven't heard any of those spices, hehe.. I though wonder, what is the factor of 'addictiveness' in Phal? Is it the endurance of something so hot, or the sweat, or just the burning sensation in your mouth and head?
I kind of wonder.. it's like mild self torture if you look at it, hehe.. quite the same as the addiction of piercings and tatoo's.
You endure and maintain the hotness of the Phal, lessers spices become obsolete. Now nothing will satisfy your hotness need. :P
That makes sense, the same happens when you get a tat' and piercing, I'd imagine.
I once tried (well, duped) eating dried flakey paprika. Actually, I'm not sure what it was, but my friend back then dumped some onto my hand and challenged me to eat it.
I actually didn't know what it was, until it came into contact with my tongue. Damn it was hot. My friend them duped me even further when looking for something to sooth it. Duped me into eating something, I think sugar, that made it worse..
both sugar and fat are known to break the casaicin reaction. Milk or bread are usually your best bet. Never drink water, it only spreads the chemical :)
Yeah that was it, water.. that bastard said it would work.. after that, he said, drink milk, it truly helps.. in which I didn't believe him, obviously.. haha. Wasn't an pleasant experience, I could barely breath.
I think if I wanted to try spicey food, I'll have to build up my threshold of tolerance :D
They give damp towls with it so you can cool your body temp while you eat it, I worked with a portugese guy whose wife was a guru of the Phal & fa phal (? ) she would cook it once a month for the family, & she wouldnt allow him to let anyone taste it, she gradually through a sort of apprentice dishes weaved them to the hottest phal, great tradition, im sure it varies, but I never got to taste one, :( .. I ate pidgeon tho :) 5/5 mate
