Personally I rather do cardio outside, as I like the fresh air and would get bored doing it inside, but if you have the space and money, it is an alternative.
If you just can't do cardio outside and are looking for an alternative, a simple jumping rope is also a possibility, if you don't have neighbors below to whom it would sound like someone is using a sledgehammer for half an hour.
If it gets your heart rate into the target zone for weight loss then its fine. As evilcyber says though, finding something outside to do is better. A stationary bike you can get off at any instant. If you have run 3 miles, you cant just stop because you have to run 3 MORE miles to get back home!
Hi Scooby... My problem is im addicted to food. I do go to the gym but i cant stop eating chocolates (mainly chocolates) - I used to weigh 19.5 stones im now 15. So ive lost a fair bit. Anyway i have muscles, i can see the definition but it is covered in flab. Do you have a video on your diet? Do you like have a weekly timetable with things you will eat over the week and at what times? I think creating a weekly timetable would help me a lot.
Scooby has a nice video up here about nutrition, that is almost at motion picture length (not to mention quality). And on his website under Nutrition > Losing Weight he shows entire meals, complete with pictures that rival those in the Michelin guide.
Shaxxie: Congrats on losing 4.5 stone- that's fantastic!!! Scoobys nutrition vid gives details of Scooby's preferred method, (which clearly works!) but if you find it to restrictive, or need the plan made up for you, rather than making your own plan according to his guidelines, you might like the website that I use, which is free and allows you to track your calorie intake, protein, fat and carbs, you can have meal plans set up for you, & weekly shopping list to print. To be continued...
Shaxxie:Continuing previous msg... Also there are a lot of articles on how to make sustainable changes to your diet and lifestyle, and about changing your attitude to food. Some people find if they are addicted to food that they have certain trigger foods that set them on a binge, and they have to avoid these altogether, but many people respond badly to cutting out foods as they feel deprived, which leads them to binge. Trial and error is probably the only way to figure that one out!
Hello tnx for ur msgs. I just find it so hard to give up chocolate. And i know this sounds bad, but i blame other people (i.e. my dad buys the choc, i tell him not to but he always goes and buys it) and if its staring at me in the fridge... how can i resist the delicious little choc mmm (im really addicted) I even gave up cigarettes they aint nothing compared to CHOCOLATE MMmm :) I know i need to change my attitude... And i did before its just going back to it. I wish i could get hypnotised.
Hey Shaxxie, We share a problem. I have a TERRIBLE weakness for ALL sweets. I have ZERO willpower, and I admitting this is the key to my success. First of all, I never buy the stuff. I want it but not so bad that I will sit in traffic 30min to go buy it. Second, you need the support of those in your household. As them for help. Get a lockbox and ask them to lock up all those goodies where you cant get to them.
If you don't gain or lose weight you eat as much energy as you use - not more, not less. Scooby's workout should help you getting some more muscle and weight, but it will take time and patience.
Don't stress it. Maybe you need to develop some more strength to get the full effect. Also keep in mind that not every workout works for everybody in the same way.
hi scooby...i´m 16 180cm (5.9 ft)and only 60kg(132 lb)...I want to work out but I olso want to gain weight without consuming extra protein...I want it natural xD...please respond (sorry if my english is not the best)
So, what keeps you back? Follow Scooby's nutrition tips and you won't need any protein supplements. Also check his website under Workout Plans > Beginning Workout Plan to start.
And as I said above, the only thing you really need to have is a couple of dumbbells, a place to do pullups and whatever is necessary for your cardio (rope, shoes, bike etc.).
Most bodybuilders are fat anyways and most are pussies that cant fight, they may endure a fight because of their big size but as for technique and attacking they are too heavy too slow, a well-trained Martial artists weighing at least 170Lb could could knock one of these meat-heads straight out. What good are muscles if you can't use them??....
If you goal is to be able to kick the cr@p out of everybody, martial arts is a better sport than bodybuilding. If you live in a tough part of town, that might be a necessary life skill. Most martial art masters would probably kick your butt out of their schools if they discovered that your intent was to use their art as an offensive weapon rather than a defensive one though.
Dear scooby, i would like to say thank you for taking your time out posting up alot of videos for people to workout, THE NATURAL WAY!!!!!!!! lol. I looked into the muscle and fitness magazine and i seen alot of guys looking like monsters, just because of those supplements (steroids). i find alot of your workouts more comfterable and easy to do. If i were to do a powerpoint presentation in my school on this, all the credit would go straight to you!!!!
Just wish the monster-body magazines would be honest with people. Its sad when they sell to bright-eyed, bushy tailed people starting in bodybuilding with the promise that if they work hard, take all the supps that they promote, that a 290lbs of solid muscle is possible - its not! Those he-men pictured use illegal pharmaceutical products, you can work out till you puke and you will never have bodies like theirs.
Just yesterday I read a report on a well-known bodybuilding site, where a bodybuilder wrote about how in the 70s he got trained by one of the stars of the scene back then.
In vivid and glowing detail he described how they did forced sets, not reps, how they frequently had to vomit and that 40 or more sets for one bodypart in one workout were the norm for them.
What he failed to mention was that his idolized trainer later almost died, due to a cocktail of 12 or so drugs he frequently used.
I'm 15 years old and I'm not in a pretty good shape... no really..not at all... so I'm searching for some workout moves... I don't have anything in appartament that you normally find in a gym.. no rpesure tubes no nothing... so until i buy some wheights and the others thing can you tell me what exercices i can do? i already do pushup ,abs, and others but i want to increase my strenght and biceps.... Please help
You can of course already do pushups, crunches and pullups. For the last just find something that will support you, a pipe, a branch etc.
About the only thing you really need to have is a couple of dumbbells and whatever is necessary for your cardio (rope, shoes, bike etc.). Even when you don't have the dumbbells yet, you can substitute them with gallon containers you fill with water, for example, although it's not ideal in the long run.
Now go and check Scooby's beginner workout on his site.
I started working out. After I could easily lift a certain weight 50 times I decided it was time to move onto heaver weights. I could barely lift it 20 times. Then ten times. Then I quit. When I returned to the old weight I could do 50 again easily. What happened? If you do a lot of repetitions can you lift heavier weights or are these two separate things?
When you are able to do about 30 repetitions with a given weight you are well into training muscle endurance, not strength.
The weight you originally used was way too light, it seems, and the second just about right (if you managed 20 in strict form). Example: Do as many curls as you can with a 20 lbs dumbbell. Now do the same exercise, but with a pencil! You will probably be able to curl the pencil until you fall asleep.
Aim for 3 sets with 6-12 repetitions per exercise.
Yet again another great video. Clear & simple explanations. I've been doing this exercise the wrong way.....I'm now off to the garage to do it properly. Cheers and thanks again for taking the time to do all this.
I see no problem with it, as at 15 you already should be well into puberty. Just make sure you start out with exercises where you use your own bodyweight.
Combine them with a good sport for general fitness and body coordination, like soccer or tennis, as you will need that coordination later on.
hey scooby you should make a video about lower ab fat i cant get rid of that my upper abs arn't fat at all can you please make a video to flatten my abs and get a flat midsection plz?
lol intense cardio and proper diet are the way to lose that. Crunches and situps do burn some fat gradually, but nowhere near as effective as a 30 minute jog.
Can anybody tell me a good set of barbells/ dumb bells. anyone know a set where you get the plates barbell bar and dumb bell bars. also what is a good size barbell 6 ft standard of 5 ft?
Buy the weight set used, craigslist(.)org is a great place to look. Good rate for used weights is $0.25-$0.50/lb of weight - a good price for new weights is about $1/lb. Old ones are just as good or better than new ones. If you want to buy new anyway, check my website under Basics>Equipment for links to buy weights.
About the barbell length: It is a matter of preference. You should go to a fitness store and try different lengths and diameters to find out what you are most comfortable with.
Hey Scooby can you do me a favour plz could you tell me some chest exercises to do i work my chest twice a week and i want to do supersets i want to really work my chest and get good big results thanks :) keep you vids coming there great and you look very good also ;)
I watched your videos a while back, i had problems with building up chest muscle as all my muscle went to my back and shoulders, i started to follow your chest workout videos and now i have a nice toned chest, i used to have a ribbed chest, now i have good muscle so thankyou very much for posting these videos, you have been a great help.
Hey scooby i am doing your intermediate workout, and I was wondering what you meant by 6 sets of lunges. Do i do six sets of for each leg, or do i do 3 for each leg ?
Since lunges are the only quad exercise I currently have in that workout (more to come later) the 6 sets means 6 for each leg, so 12 sets total. Sorry you asked???
I did same thing that u did in this video and i woke up other day my chest hurths so badly...Can i work out more if my chest hurths or i shoud wait till the pain goes away ? i cant even rise up my hand up...I worked out very good :}
You should give your body time to recover. You don't want to overtrain. If you just keep lifting without giving your body time to recover, you won't see the results you want.
As xodiiak said, definitely rest. I would rest 7 days, if its still sore after 7 days then you did something bad. First time you are doing an exercise, dont push it, start out with little weights and gradually over the course of 2 months ramp up till you are lifting as much as you can. Sorry :(
Lately I have been alternating - 6mo at the gym, 6mo at home. My gym membership was $30/mo but it cost me $7 in gas each day to drive there! I quit the gym 3 months ago so I'm happily working out at home now.
Hey Scoobie ! Just wanna say... Watch out man ! Some money mongers might wanna put you down for givin' all these wonderful, clear and simple exercises technique, that anyone can understand, for free ! It's so rare to see someone who simply enjoy what he's doing and just wanna share his experience with others ! In other words: " YOU THE MAN SCOOBIE !!! " Keep on the good work-out cos
you've surely help a lot with mine and I know countless will agree !!! Thanks !!!
I'm not sure what you mean by "disconnect often in the shoulders". If you mean you dislocate your shoulder, that is, it pops out of joint, then you need to see a doctor asap. Chronic dislocations can cause problems later in life. Certainly dont do any exercise that causes that to happen to your shoulder!!!
Excellent! Just focus on how much better it makes you feel and how much stronger you feel each month and that will give you the motivation to keep lifting. The muscle mass will follow the strength slowly, just continue to have patience.
Scooby i think your videos are great so well done. so please doing them, i have done weight off and on for years, i always check your videos out. keep up the great work.
Scooby, is it possible to do incline and decline bench presses without the bench? For incline, I've been arching my back upwards and pinching my shoulder blades together to get the effect, is this the correct method? What about declines? I want to build strength and size throughout my chest overall. btw, keep up your awesome videos!
If you actually arch your back into the air, it will cause a lot of stress on your back, as it won't only have to stay rigid to support your upper body, but also your arms and the weights they are holding.
Personally I just do presses and flys as Dr. Scooby prescribed.
You can do inclines and declines without a bench but not the way you are doing it, that sounds dangerous. You can build an incline bench by fastening a 2x8 4' long to a strong coffee table, see "Exercises>Chest" on my website for pix. Drill holes in the 2x8 and use wire to fasten it to the legs of the coffee table securely. No, I wont give you construction details (insurance) just be sure it is stable and will not slide/fall when you are using it.
Wow Scooby, thanks, I thought I had seen all of your videos, but I must have missed the incline presses completely. I watched them from your website and now see what you mean. Very good pointers and as always, clear and honest proven advice. I will try your suggestion. Thank you :-)
if you're having trouble figuring out which video maybe you should create a poll on your website but i mean its up to you since you can do whats more comfortable for u
man i did diz nd it burnin i havnt done workout in like 2 weeks but i had some chest nd i wanted more so i seen diz nd ma chest was burnin after 50 push-ups nd then i did thease till i got tired thanks dude hope i get ma chest bigger nd im bearly 16 nd in gued shape lol well thks
For tough core exercises, I them all with one thing in common - lie down and place the hips on a chair and tuck both legs under a heavy table. From that position, I can do extra range of motion with my situps because I can go down below 180 degrees and come up to about 45 deg. For obliques, face sideways and do side crunches, with extra range again of course. The upper movement of side crunches work the love handles, while the lower movement works the upper obliques.
Another variation to the side crunches on a chair is the twist. Same position except twist your torso till you face the ceiling, then twist back down till facing sideways.
??? I clicked reply to the previous message but my message still becomes an independent one? I hate when that happens.
Not sure what my next video is going to be, I have so many floating around in my head. So many videos, so little time. I want to do my advanced killer chest workout but I want to do some nutrition vids also.
Please see my video "6-pack abs fast". There is NO way to do spot removal of love handles although there are hundreds of companies that would gladly take your money and promise it.
BTW for people wanting to "remove love handles", doing obliques can make it worse. Doing obliques make the muscles under the love handles stronger/bigger - not exactly what you are trying to achieve. All you can do is reduce your bodyfat.
Your videos are solid man. You break everything down very simple/informative & you come off as helpful & modest. Not your typical workout instructions & that's why alot of people subscribe & keep coming back. nicely done!
oh hi i was asking about bowflex selecttech earlier but after researching i found out they break easily so if anyone was planning to get them i advise you should and probalby just get a set of dumbbells like scooby said
hey scooby thanks a lot for the videos. i actually have a question about trying to build my body so it looks good, haha. i'm about 5'11, 155 pounds and i was wondering how wide or close of a grip you recommend for my body type. i've talked to some guys, and some say that for my height i should be doing a wider grip because im taller than most? but i see some of my friends that are about the same height as me doing normal grip bench and still having a nice defined chest. not to sound gay.
i've been doing normal-gripped bench for some time now, but i feel like my chest doesn't look like it should, if you know what i mean? it's like kind of defined, but at the ends where it means my shoulders you can't really see that big cut that most people have. i'm having a hard time explaining it, but i hope you get what i'm trying to say.
Same thing here, just eat ALLOT and try some diffrent style of exercises, like incline or machine or hammer strenght - variety is also very improtant.
well u see scooby..my bones are very small..i mean the arent big..thus i cant build bigger muslces...btw u got any other ways of buildin muscles..beside the use of steriods or protein shakes??
Where did you get your information that small bones means you cant add muscle? I'm afraid you have been given bad information. Just start a good resistance training program, you will get stronger every month. Eventually mass follows strength so dont worry about it, just get in there and consistently lift. Enjoy one day at a time, every workout will make you feel better.
Whoa horsey! Increase bone mass? Do you have some serious medical condition, if so you need to work with your doctor.
Increase muscle mass fast? Adding muscle is not a fast process, adding 5lbs of muscle a year is pretty good progress if you lift 5 days a week for an hour each workout. If you want fast results, you will be disappointed.
est exercise for getn rid of fat on ur chest is bench press 3 diferent inclines 1 flat 3 sets of 5 2 decline 3 sets of 5 3 incline 3 sets of 5 do it atleast 2 a week ur chest will have toned up in 4 weeks
Hi scooby, I am 22 and have a bony wrist. Now I understand that you can't make your wrist bigger because it doesn't have enough muscles there. What can I do to make it look better or make it bigger? someone told me if you workout your forearms, your wrist might look bigger with the forearms extending to the wrist. What exercises I should do for my wrist, how often, how many type of exercises? and how heavy? I am sure other people have the same issue too.
A general upper body workout plan will help add muscle to your forearms. BTW, having small wrists are an advantage in bodybuilding because it makes all your muscles look larger in comparison. You are right, nothing you can do to add muscle over the wrists. If you want one forearm exercise, I would do reverse dumbell curls (with your palms facing down) - this is the opposite way you would hold the weights if you were exercising biceps. Use light wt, easy to injure self doing this.
scooby you should make LOWER ab workouts because i have a big fat area near my abs that are flabby and i want to no how to get rid of it by the way im not fat overall just saying to make lower ab workouts thx great videos
The way I used to workout my lower abs is to sit on the edge of a high banch with the body tilted a bit to the back (45 degrees or so) or lift the body between two rails (there is a special equipment for that purpose, but I hope you know what I mean), and lift the legs keeping them straight. This exersise will affect your lower abs pretty well and will also add to the legs. I hope you can make some sence out of what I've said.
You CAN'T make fat at a SPECIFIC bodypart make go away through an exercise. Fat goes away when you lose weight. And WHEN you lose weight, the body decides WHERE it goes off.
In other words: You can have the strongest abs in the world, no one will see them when they are covered by fat. You may want to check Scooby's Abduminator and nutrition videos.
EbopAllDay:Unfortunately you can't choose where you lose or gain fat,(otherwise I'd be a very different shape haha) but it will come off your abs eventually if you lose fat generally. As for lower abs, the rectus abdominus muscle (that looks like a 6 or 8 little muscles) is actually only one muscle, and you can't isolate one part of a single muscle and work that separately. So the best thing to do is focus on losing the fat through cardio and diet. Check out Scoobys 6 pack abs videos for ideas.
Evilcyber: Uh-huh. But I suppose that would take the fun out of it, if everyone looked the same. When I get in shape I'll be glad of the pride in my hard work, but right now I'd take the quick fix if such a thing existed :o)
Your problem is that you want to get thinner but can't get any thinner.
Here is my suggestion: Start doing the beginner's workout Scooby has on his website. While doing it, try to maintain your current bodyweight. Over the course of about a year, your body composition should change to what you want, as more and more of your weight won't be made up from fat, but from the muscle you gain.
A lot of guys are in the same boat- low bodyfat but stubborn fat in the abdominal area, Scooby's videos on 6- pack abs are aimed at anyone who wants to uncover their abs, whether they have all over fat to lose or not. Hope it works for you.
For most people, the last place the fat resides is over the lower abs (belly button region) and over the hip bones (love handles). I am no exception and its annoying. Three options. 1)Live with it 2)Reduce bodyfat another 3% which is difficult for me to do and makes my face look gaunt. 3) surgically remove the fat deposits (plastic surgery) Personally, I hate knives and needles and there is no way I would consider plastic surgery. Its option #1 for me!
The squat rack i was talking about is "Powertec P-PR Power Rack" on amazon
It looks pretty stable and I can do pull ups on it too so I was interested. But with this type of rack I could lower the bar hooks and safety rods to appropriate level and do bench press with oly bar alone?
If you are just starting out lifting, get the one thing that represents the best value in weightlifting and can be found so cheap it will make you cry: a used set of dumbbells. Then check Scooby's beginning workout plan and start it.
When, after three months or so, you feel that you don't get the hang of weightlifting, you won't have a huge machine worth thousands of bucks sitting at home.
Well I already tried looking for a used set of dumbbell and have been trying on craigslist. Everyone is selling them over priced so I dont really want to spend 300 on them + drive 40 miles to chicago when I could just add another 100 and get a brand new set at my convenience.
And i ask about bowflex because buying a squat rack, olympic bars + weights, dumbbells, bench add up to same price as a bowflex machine. I've already been doing home workouts but i don thave variety with equipment i have
Whatever rocks your boat, but if you look at garage sales, on ebay or craigslist, affordable sets of used dumbbells can be found easily.
Honestly, because I feel this is the real issue for many people asking about big dollar equipment: You muscles won't gain size and strength faster or better because of using an expensive piece of equipment to exercise them.
Hang in there, you WILL find something cheap on craigslist. I just looked around chicago and found a 150lbs weight set listed for $60 - a fair price (craigslist ad#848196245). Also a bargain was a 545lb olymipc weight set for $250 (craigslist ad#854104774) - this is also a fair price. You might even be able to talk them down in price a bit.
On the subject of used weights equipment, Freecycle is great- you join your local group and people post messages about stuff they want or stuff they want to give away, and then people can email you and exchange items for FREE. I can't post the address here but it starts the usual way, ends in "org", and has freecycle in the middle!
The Powertec P-PR Power Rack looks pretty good, I just checked it out. If you have gobs of money and are setting up an ultimate home gym, I would get one. You could do self-spotted squats, bench press, incline press, decline press, and pullups in it. Again though, only buy this if money is no object - same with the bowflex. A used set of dumbbells costs $50. When you think about buying $500+ pieces of eqpt, joining a gym might be a better value.
Hey Scooby i have a serious question if i use Whey protein drink and drink a glass of it everyday will that be to much protein for my body, because i hear to much protein in your body will cause problems in your liver and kidney and even produce kidney stones....
do some research yourself but ive done plenty of it and most of the time i find that you would have to take well over 200g of protein from whey for it to slightly affect your liver/kidneys. if you dont know already whey protien is just very concentrated milk with added protiens the body doesnt produce itself. just make sure you read the container of the whey protien you buy to make sure no harmful chemicals are added and you'll be fine. i wouldnt worry about drinking a glass of protein per day.
I've never been injured while working out, not in 25 years of lifting. Had lots of sports injuries that resulted in surgery (or physical therapy) but never been injured from weight lifting.
dude are you retarded? All of this guys videos are dedicated to home work out plans..He shows you how to do every excercise without goin to a gym! Watch and learn.
heyy scooby i am 18 year old an i would love to have a good body like yours. i started going gym. an i really would like to have a chest like yours. but i dont use any protein drinks or shakes. so do u think i could get a good body without taking any supplements??? PLZ REPLLY........ thanks man u rock
It depends on your genetics, mine are pretty good. You might be able to get as muscular as me, or maybe not so much but one thing is clear you CAN get stronger and bigger - the only question is how much. Remember that it took me 15 years to add my mass, dont count on anything fast. You will get stronger every month and mass slowly follows strength.
is it possible to use a power rack to spot myself when doing a bench press with barbell? and is it safe to do squats alone on power rack since they have the rods in middle?
Im not expert but, for my experince working out over the years it depends on what kind of power rack your talking about, the one with the bar on a rail system or the rack with the adjustable stoppers. Both are good just the rack with the rail system doesn't really work the stabilzer muscles, and I found when going from a power rack to free weight bench press I wasn't able to do as much wieght and found that I had a tendency to push at a angle because on a rail it wouldn't matter how I pushed
Good point, it would depend on the type of squat rack you are talking about. They type you need for doing bench press is one that has a horizontal safety bar the full depth of the cage so that there is no place the bar could fall and touch your body (thus causing injury). Wish I had a gym I could film at to demonstrate this!
There are some squat racks that are little more than stands to set the weight on, these are inadequate for bench press self spotting.
Excellent point! Back 10-15 years ago when I did bench press thats exactly what I did. Using a squat rack with the safety bars set to catch the oly bar when its about 2" off your chest is the safest way to do bench press, far safer than using a spotter.
I would stay from shoulder shrugs if you already have naturally big traps or if you have shoulder issues. Especially avoid them if you have any issues with your AC joint, I speak from experience here.
hey i seriously need to ask you a question i am 13 years old and i am planning to do 50 pushups a day and 50 crunches a day will this stunt my growth please reply back i seriously need help scooby ur videos really helped me and i subscribed but i cant do heavy weights till im 18 i want to know if 50 pushups and 50 crunches a day is too much please reply back thank you and will it affect my growth
nweight training wont stunt your growth so no and u dont have to wait til ur 16. also if u do the same thing every day u dont get as much out of it and start to get less muscle from it. and its not how many of the exercise you do, you need good form and do it until you cant anymore
Check Scooby's website under Myths > Stunted Growth.
And in my opinion exercises where you use just your own bodyweight, like pullups, pushups, crunches etc. will do no harm at your age, but you may also want to combine them with a good sport for general fitness, like soccer or tennis.
guys i am 13 years old and i want to do crunches and pushups and i wanted to know if crunches and pushups stunt ur growth please reply back thank you very much
Would a stationary bike be good cardio to use at home?
PitchBlackForecast 3 years ago 69

Shaxxie 3 years ago 79
Scooby has a nice video up here about nutrition, that is almost at motion picture length (not to mention quality). And on his website under Nutrition > Losing Weight he shows entire meals, complete with pictures that rival those in the Michelin guide.
Evilcyber 3 years ago 23
Shaxxie: Congrats on losing 4.5 stone- that's fantastic!!! Scoobys nutrition vid gives details of Scooby's preferred method, (which clearly works!) but if you find it to restrictive, or need the plan made up for you, rather than making your own plan according to his guidelines, you might like the website that I use, which is free and allows you to track your calorie intake, protein, fat and carbs, you can have meal plans set up for you, & weekly shopping list to print. To be continued...

I dont get teased ...I´m pretty fast and I good at martial arts...but I would like to gain more weght cause I eat a lot but I steel skinny...lol ...

If you don't gain or lose weight you eat as much energy as you use - not more, not less. Scooby's workout should help you getting some more muscle and weight, but it will take time and patience.

Don't stress it. Maybe you need to develop some more strength to get the full effect. Also keep in mind that not every workout works for everybody in the same way.

hi scooby...i´m 16 180cm (5.9 ft)and only 60kg(132 lb)...I want to work out but I olso want to gain weight without consuming extra protein...I want it natural xD...please respond (sorry if my english is not the best)
magnilsonmelo 3 years ago
you wont gain any weight if you're not eating a balanced diet including protein
TeAmxDeViOuSxAuS 3 years ago
So, what keeps you back? Follow Scooby's nutrition tips and you won't need any protein supplements. Also check his website under Workout Plans > Beginning Workout Plan to start.
And as I said above, the only thing you really need to have is a couple of dumbbells, a place to do pullups and whatever is necessary for your cardio (rope, shoes, bike etc.).
Greetings to Portugal, btw! :)

israelvideo100 3 years ago
No, dumbbell flys are best done on the floor. Please see my video on Se;f-Spotting techniques to hear why ...
scooby1961 3 years ago 5
Most bodybuilders are fat anyways and most are pussies that cant fight, they may endure a fight because of their big size but as for technique and attacking they are too heavy too slow, a well-trained Martial artists weighing at least 170Lb could could knock one of these meat-heads straight out. What good are muscles if you can't use them??....
maciasx010x 3 years ago
k.. you think that way. You probably get teased for not having any muscle so that's why you you're attitude it built that way
TeAmxDeViOuSxAuS 3 years ago
If you goal is to be able to kick the cr@p out of everybody, martial arts is a better sport than bodybuilding. If you live in a tough part of town, that might be a necessary life skill. Most martial art masters would probably kick your butt out of their schools if they discovered that your intent was to use their art as an offensive weapon rather than a defensive one though.
scooby1961 3 years ago 247
Thanks scooby dumbell flys are my favourate exercise
buzzlightyear10 3 years ago 23
Dear scooby, i would like to say thank you for taking your time out posting up alot of videos for people to workout, THE NATURAL WAY!!!!!!!! lol. I looked into the muscle and fitness magazine and i seen alot of guys looking like monsters, just because of those supplements (steroids). i find alot of your workouts more comfterable and easy to do. If i were to do a powerpoint presentation in my school on this, all the credit would go straight to you!!!!
makkin16 3 years ago 4

Evilcyber 3 years ago
LOL! you make me laugh
TeAmxDeViOuSxAuS 3 years ago
Well, when you read that report it really is almost comically funny.
But the sad part is that too many kids read that and believe they actually SHOULD train that way.

Please help
Anarchist1993 3 years ago 2
You can of course already do pushups, crunches and pullups. For the last just find something that will support you, a pipe, a branch etc.
About the only thing you really need to have is a couple of dumbbells and whatever is necessary for your cardio (rope, shoes, bike etc.). Even when you don't have the dumbbells yet, you can substitute them with gallon containers you fill with water, for example, although it's not ideal in the long run.
Now go and check Scooby's beginner workout on his site.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
I started working out. After I could easily lift a certain weight 50 times I decided it was time to move onto heaver weights. I could barely lift it 20 times. Then ten times. Then I quit. When I returned to the old weight I could do 50 again easily. What happened? If you do a lot of repetitions can you lift heavier weights or are these two separate things?
NitrogenDioxide 3 years ago
When you are able to do about 30 repetitions with a given weight you are well into training muscle endurance, not strength.
The weight you originally used was way too light, it seems, and the second just about right (if you managed 20 in strict form). Example: Do as many curls as you can with a 20 lbs dumbbell. Now do the same exercise, but with a pencil! You will probably be able to curl the pencil until you fall asleep.
Aim for 3 sets with 6-12 repetitions per exercise.

could 15 year olds do this
AirSoftKing15 3 years ago
I see no problem with it, as at 15 you already should be well into puberty. Just make sure you start out with exercises where you use your own bodyweight.
Combine them with a good sport for general fitness and body coordination, like soccer or tennis, as you will need that coordination later on.

Can anybody tell me a good set of barbells/ dumb bells. anyone know a set where you get the plates barbell bar and dumb bell bars. also what is a good size barbell 6 ft standard of 5 ft?
RmagicmanJ 3 years ago
Buy the weight set used, craigslist(.)org is a great place to look. Good rate for used weights is $0.25-$0.50/lb of weight - a good price for new weights is about $1/lb. Old ones are just as good or better than new ones. If you want to buy new anyway, check my website under Basics>Equipment for links to buy weights.
scooby1961 3 years ago
About the barbell length: It is a matter of preference. You should go to a fitness store and try different lengths and diameters to find out what you are most comfortable with.

Hey scooby i am doing your intermediate workout, and I was wondering what you meant by 6 sets of lunges. Do i do six sets of for each leg, or do i do 3 for each leg ?
Jogogle678 3 years ago
Since lunges are the only quad exercise I currently have in that workout (more to come later) the 6 sets means 6 for each leg, so 12 sets total. Sorry you asked???

Paulexas112 3 years ago
You should give your body time to recover. You don't want to overtrain. If you just keep lifting without giving your body time to recover, you won't see the results you want.
zodiiak 3 years ago
As xodiiak said, definitely rest. I would rest 7 days, if its still sore after 7 days then you did something bad. First time you are doing an exercise, dont push it, start out with little weights and gradually over the course of 2 months ramp up till you are lifting as much as you can. Sorry :(

Huulin 3 years ago
I'm not sure what you mean by "disconnect often in the shoulders". If you mean you dislocate your shoulder, that is, it pops out of joint, then you need to see a doctor asap. Chronic dislocations can cause problems later in life. Certainly dont do any exercise that causes that to happen to your shoulder!!!

Excellent! Just focus on how much better it makes you feel and how much stronger you feel each month and that will give you the motivation to keep lifting. The muscle mass will follow the strength slowly, just continue to have patience.

Scooby, is it possible to do incline and decline bench presses without the bench? For incline, I've been arching my back upwards and pinching my shoulder blades together to get the effect, is this the correct method? What about declines? I want to build strength and size throughout my chest overall. btw, keep up your awesome videos!
ManOfMeans 3 years ago
I'm not sure how I have to picture this :)
If you actually arch your back into the air, it will cause a lot of stress on your back, as it won't only have to stay rigid to support your upper body, but also your arms and the weights they are holding.
Personally I just do presses and flys as Dr. Scooby prescribed.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
You can do inclines and declines without a bench but not the way you are doing it, that sounds dangerous. You can build an incline bench by fastening a 2x8 4' long to a strong coffee table, see "Exercises>Chest" on my website for pix. Drill holes in the 2x8 and use wire to fasten it to the legs of the coffee table securely. No, I wont give you construction details (insurance) just be sure it is stable and will not slide/fall when you are using it.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Wow Scooby, thanks, I thought I had seen all of your videos, but I must have missed the incline presses completely. I watched them from your website and now see what you mean. Very good pointers and as always, clear and honest proven advice. I will try your suggestion. Thank you :-)

do you happen to know any real great oblique exercises or anyway to get those unwanted love handles away?!
atlborn16 3 years ago
For tough core exercises, I them all with one thing in common - lie down and place the hips on a chair and tuck both legs under a heavy table. From that position, I can do extra range of motion with my situps because I can go down below 180 degrees and come up to about 45 deg. For obliques, face sideways and do side crunches, with extra range again of course. The upper movement of side crunches work the love handles, while the lower movement works the upper obliques.
parichtang 3 years ago
Another variation to the side crunches on a chair is the twist. Same position except twist your torso till you face the ceiling, then twist back down till facing sideways.
??? I clicked reply to the previous message but my message still becomes an independent one? I hate when that happens.
parichtang 3 years ago
I meant to reply to the previous person... hehe... whatever youtube's messaging system is faulty.
When is your next video Scooby? Is it going to be a chest lesson?
parichtang 3 years ago
Not sure what my next video is going to be, I have so many floating around in my head. So many videos, so little time. I want to do my advanced killer chest workout but I want to do some nutrition vids also.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Do nutrition videos ;)
Paulexas112 3 years ago
LOL :)
Evilcyber 3 years ago
Please see my video "6-pack abs fast". There is NO way to do spot removal of love handles although there are hundreds of companies that would gladly take your money and promise it.
scooby1961 3 years ago
BTW for people wanting to "remove love handles", doing obliques can make it worse. Doing obliques make the muscles under the love handles stronger/bigger - not exactly what you are trying to achieve. All you can do is reduce your bodyfat.
scooby1961 3 years ago

hey scooby thanks a lot for the videos. i actually have a question about trying to build my body so it looks good, haha. i'm about 5'11, 155 pounds and i was wondering how wide or close of a grip you recommend for my body type. i've talked to some guys, and some say that for my height i should be doing a wider grip because im taller than most? but i see some of my friends that are about the same height as me doing normal grip bench and still having a nice defined chest. not to sound gay.
Spacecowboyy 3 years ago
i've been doing normal-gripped bench for some time now, but i feel like my chest doesn't look like it should, if you know what i mean? it's like kind of defined, but at the ends where it means my shoulders you can't really see that big cut that most people have. i'm having a hard time explaining it, but i hope you get what i'm trying to say.
Spacecowboyy 3 years ago
Same thing here, just eat ALLOT and try some diffrent style of exercises, like incline or machine or hammer strenght - variety is also very improtant.
qdsqd 3 years ago
The same muscle groups look different on different people, just like your ears probably don't look like mine :)
As long you make progress I wouldn't worry. When you plateau, try a different exercise to target this muscle, just as qdsqd suggested.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
well u see scooby..my bones are very small..i mean the arent big..thus i cant build bigger muslces...btw u got any other ways of buildin muscles..beside the use of steriods or protein shakes??
mes66 3 years ago
Where did you get your information that small bones means you cant add muscle? I'm afraid you have been given bad information. Just start a good resistance training program, you will get stronger every month. Eventually mass follows strength so dont worry about it, just get in there and consistently lift. Enjoy one day at a time, every workout will make you feel better.

mes66 3 years ago
Hey mes66,
Whoa horsey!

I am sure other people have the same issue too.
zzackir 3 years ago
A general upper body workout plan will help add muscle to your forearms. BTW, having small wrists are an advantage in bodybuilding because it makes all your muscles look larger in comparison. You are right, nothing you can do to add muscle over the wrists. If you want one forearm exercise, I would do reverse dumbell curls (with your palms facing down) - this is the opposite way you would hold the weights if you were exercising biceps. Use light wt, easy to injure self doing this.
scooby1961 3 years ago
scooby you should make LOWER ab workouts because i have a big fat area near my abs that are flabby and i want to no how to get rid of it by the way im not fat overall just saying to make lower ab workouts thx great videos
EbopAllDay 3 years ago
The way I used to workout my lower abs is to sit on the edge of a high banch with the body tilted a bit to the back (45 degrees or so) or lift the body between two rails (there is a special equipment for that purpose, but I hope you know what I mean), and lift the legs keeping them straight. This exersise will affect your lower abs pretty well and will also add to the legs. I hope you can make some sence out of what I've said.
ak47niko 3 years ago
Diet & Arobic exercise gets rid of fat. Ab workouts TONE the abs.
Stylez1877 3 years ago
You CAN'T make fat at a SPECIFIC bodypart make go away through an exercise. Fat goes away when you lose weight. And WHEN you lose weight, the body decides WHERE it goes off.
In other words: You can have the strongest abs in the world, no one will see them when they are covered by fat. You may want to check Scooby's Abduminator and nutrition videos.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
EbopAllDay:Unfortunately you can't choose where you lose or gain fat,(otherwise I'd be a very different shape haha) but it will come off your abs eventually if you lose fat generally. As for lower abs, the rectus abdominus muscle (that looks like a 6 or 8 little muscles) is actually only one muscle, and you can't isolate one part of a single muscle and work that separately. So the best thing to do is focus on losing the fat through cardio and diet. Check out Scoobys 6 pack abs videos for ideas.
sexomaticveganfreak 3 years ago
@being different shape: yeah, wouldn't we all look fantastic? :)
Evilcyber 3 years ago
Evilcyber: Uh-huh. But I suppose that would take the fun out of it, if everyone looked the same. When I get in shape I'll be glad of the pride in my hard work, but right now I'd take the quick fix if such a thing existed :o)
sexomaticveganfreak 3 years ago
yea but im not fat overall im actuly skinny wanting to build muscle and lose lower ab fat
EbopAllDay 3 years ago
Your problem is that you want to get thinner but can't get any thinner.
Here is my suggestion: Start doing the beginner's workout Scooby has on his website. While doing it, try to maintain your current bodyweight. Over the course of about a year, your body composition should change to what you want, as more and more of your weight won't be made up from fat, but from the muscle you gain.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
A lot of guys are in the same boat- low bodyfat but stubborn fat in the abdominal area, Scooby's videos on 6- pack abs are aimed at anyone who wants to uncover their abs, whether they have all over fat to lose or not. Hope it works for you.
sexomaticveganfreak 3 years ago 3

But with this type of rack I could lower the bar hooks and safety rods to appropriate level and do bench press with oly bar alone?
thank you
Nyohttekotte 3 years ago
btw I read your earlier comment to someone you said Bowflex is good, but compared to free weights is it?
Nyohttekotte 3 years ago
Folks, why are you making it so complicated?
If you are just starting out lifting, get the one thing that represents the best value in weightlifting and can be found so cheap it will make you cry: a used set of dumbbells. Then check Scooby's beginning workout plan and start it.
When, after three months or so, you feel that you don't get the hang of weightlifting, you won't have a huge machine worth thousands of bucks sitting at home.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
Well I already tried looking for a used set of dumbbell and have been trying on craigslist. Everyone is selling them over priced so I dont really want to spend 300 on them + drive 40 miles to chicago when I could just add another 100 and get a brand new set at my convenience.
And i ask about bowflex because buying a squat rack, olympic bars + weights, dumbbells, bench add up to same price as a bowflex machine. I've already been doing home workouts but i don thave variety with equipment i have
Nyohttekotte 3 years ago
Whatever rocks your boat, but if you look at garage sales, on ebay or craigslist, affordable sets of used dumbbells can be found easily.
Honestly, because I feel this is the real issue for many people asking about big dollar equipment: You muscles won't gain size and strength faster or better because of using an expensive piece of equipment to exercise them.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
Hang in there, you WILL find something cheap on craigslist. I just looked around chicago and found a 150lbs weight set listed for $60 - a fair price (craigslist ad#848196245). Also a bargain was a 545lb olymipc weight set for $250 (craigslist ad#854104774) - this is also a fair price. You might even be able to talk them down in price a bit.
scooby1961 3 years ago
On the subject of used weights equipment, Freecycle is great- you join your local group and people post messages about stuff they want or stuff they want to give away, and then people can email you and exchange items for FREE. I can't post the address here but it starts the usual way, ends in "org", and has freecycle in the middle!
sexomaticveganfreak 3 years ago
Nothing is as good as free weights!
Stylez1877 3 years ago
The Powertec P-PR Power Rack looks pretty good, I just checked it out. If you have gobs of money and are setting up an ultimate home gym, I would get one. You could do self-spotted squats, bench press, incline press, decline press, and pullups in it. Again though, only buy this if money is no object - same with the bowflex. A used set of dumbbells costs $50. When you think about buying $500+ pieces of eqpt, joining a gym might be a better value.

Hey Scooby i have a serious question if i use Whey protein drink and drink a glass of it everyday will that be to much protein for my body, because i hear to much protein in your body will cause problems in your liver and kidney and even produce kidney stones....
smashchamp117 3 years ago
0.5 to 1 g of protein per lb of bodyweight is enough.
People who use protein drinks excessively may experience the illnesses you described.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
do some research yourself but ive done plenty of it and most of the time i find that you would have to take well over 200g of protein from whey for it to slightly affect your liver/kidneys. if you dont know already whey protien is just very concentrated milk with added protiens the body doesnt produce itself. just make sure you read the container of the whey protien you buy to make sure no harmful chemicals are added and you'll be fine. i wouldnt worry about drinking a glass of protein per day.

well sense you have been doing this stuff for over 20 years have you ever had to go to the hospital for an injury from workouts???
thatguyoncops 3 years ago
I've never been injured while working out, not in 25 years of lifting. Had lots of sports injuries that resulted in surgery (or physical therapy) but never been injured from weight lifting.

The Germans have a funny little rhyme that is appropriate here "Sport macht Mord". Roughly translated, "sports kill you".

heyy scooby i am 18 year old an i would love to have a good body like yours. i started going gym. an i really would like to have a chest like yours. but i dont use any protein drinks or shakes. so do u think i could get a good body without taking any supplements??? PLZ REPLLY........ thanks man u rock
aj2719 3 years ago
It depends on your genetics, mine are pretty good. You might be able to get as muscular as me, or maybe not so much but one thing is clear you CAN get stronger and bigger - the only question is how much. Remember that it took me 15 years to add my mass, dont count on anything fast. You will get stronger every month and mass slowly follows strength.

is it possible to use a power rack to spot myself when doing a bench press with barbell? and is it safe to do squats alone on power rack since they have the rods in middle?
thinking about getting one
thanx
Nyohttekotte 3 years ago
Im not expert but, for my experince working out over the years it depends on what kind of power rack your talking about, the one with the bar on a rail system or the rack with the adjustable stoppers. Both are good just the rack with the rail system doesn't really work the stabilzer muscles, and I found when going from a power rack to free weight bench press I wasn't able to do as much wieght and found that I had a tendency to push at a angle because on a rail it wouldn't matter how I pushed
12gaugefun 3 years ago
Good point, it would depend on the type of squat rack you are talking about. They type you need for doing bench press is one that has a horizontal safety bar the full depth of the cage so that there is no place the bar could fall and touch your body (thus causing injury). Wish I had a gym I could film at to demonstrate this!
There are some squat racks that are little more than stands to set the weight on, these are inadequate for bench press self spotting.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Excellent point! Back 10-15 years ago when I did bench press thats exactly what I did. Using a squat rack with the safety bars set to catch the oly bar when its about 2" off your chest is the safest way to do bench press, far safer than using a spotter.

If you are a beginner, you should do whole body workouts. Check Scooby's website under Workout Plans > Beginning Workout Plan.

hi scooby would you approve shoulder shruggs or would those be something to stay away from
thatguyoncops 3 years ago
He actually mentioned how to do shrugs in one of his videos. It's called "Dumbbell shrugs for traps"
cubefreak123 3 years ago
I would stay from shoulder shrugs if you already have naturally big traps or if you have shoulder issues. Especially avoid them if you have any issues with your AC joint, I speak from experience here.

Your shoulders should never move from the ground right?
zeugirdoR92 3 years ago
Right. With dumbbell flys, you plant your shoulders on the floor and they stay there.

hey i seriously need to ask you a question i am 13 years old and i am planning to do 50 pushups a day and 50 crunches a day will this stunt my growth please reply back i seriously need help scooby ur videos really helped me and i subscribed but i cant do heavy weights till im 18 i want to know if 50 pushups and 50 crunches a day is too much please reply back thank you and will it affect my growth
waffles12341234 3 years ago
nweight training wont stunt your growth so no and u dont have to wait til ur 16. also if u do the same thing every day u dont get as much out of it and start to get less muscle from it. and its not how many of the exercise you do, you need good form and do it until you cant anymore
LALC 3 years ago
Check Scooby's website under Myths > Stunted Growth.
And in my opinion exercises where you use just your own bodyweight, like pullups, pushups, crunches etc. will do no harm at your age, but you may also want to combine them with a good sport for general fitness, like soccer or tennis.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
