I learned everything on the job, started out in rotoscoping, then paint, then junior compositing, the senior, then start supervising sequences when I got to Weta.
I think they have schools for this sort of thing now but there is nothing like on the job training.
@axgrindr your welcome ^^ btw how long did the saruman scene at the beginning of this video take you? i mean, there are many different rooms, all fully animated....
@lorin1996 Yeah, that different rooms were done with miniatures. I think each room had probably 8 or 10 different lighting passes that had to be maxed together. Then orcs had to be tracked into each of the different scenes. Then each section had to be put together into one seamless scene and the CG bats added throughout. The part at the top was a completely separate comp added onto to everything.
I guess this shot probably took about 3 weeks to put together.
@Luka1180 Hi, Gandalf's staff light was technically created by me but of course was copied from the artwork that I had to match. The light is not a CG generated element, it basically a simple 2D trick. I created a simple shape that matched the artwork for each stage of the shot then softened the edges and shoved a bunch of bright light into the shape. Then I animated the shape to match where the rays should throughout the shot.
Then I tracked that animated shape to the end of Gandalf's staff.
@MusicLoops I meant, then the light is fading away :)
I was wondering, if you wanted to (and I know it will probably be a loud "no") do some volunteer VFX on our low budget, independent, profesionally looking series, that is to be shot in a few years :)
@MusicLoops Then I say "fade out" I mean the really bright fading light that comes out the end of the staff after he used the light spell on the flying Nazgûl :) If you worked on that I mean?
@MusicLoops Thanks for the advice haha :D If you want to help me with some bad ass effects on my project, which is only being developed right now (a dark fantasy thriller web series), that would be awesome :P You probably don't have time though -_-
@MusicLoops Thanks, I've looked through so many songs from them but can't find it. Would really appreciate it if you could come up with the title but thanks mate :)
Nice work. I grew up on this shit. Are you doing stuff on The Hobbit as well? Hope that's coming along well.

@axgrindr holy crap o_O that's a lot of time for such a short scene...
i think such scenes are underrated, many people can't see how much work there is behind...

I've always wondered, what did you guys do to create Gandalf's light spell?

@Luka1180 Yes, I worked on that light effect. I developed it the method to create it and put it into the shots. That is what I explained above.
