  • Hi! Excellent videos and great job! Please keep it up! I like very much the swiss german and its pronunciation. I am from Mexico and currently living in Germany but I think the swiss german is easier for me to pronounce, especially the "ch" and the "r" sounds. I've been a couple of times in Zürich and Aarau and I could practice some of my sg so merci vielmal!

  • @elastronaut bitte gärngscheh :) dankä for your nice comment! I'm always happy when someone tells me they like SG. usually people prefer languages like italian, spanish or french. so yay :)

  • Your explanations are thorough and precise, which is good.

  • @MrTexanUSA i do try, so thank you! if you have any criticism though or suggestion what i could do better, please let me know :)

  • Wow! This is really cool!

  • @MrTexanUSA thank you very much :)

  • You explain everything really nicely, good job!

  • @laom20 thank you very much! i am glad you think so :)

  • there are lots of dialects in Switzerland, so you can't say that is THE swiss german. so she taught you a one version of the swiss german dialects.

  • @paqir yep, i make sure to tell them as often as possible that this is züridütsch, but there are many more dialects out there! :)

  • Yeeeeeaah! Biel/bienne kicks ass! I live here too!

  • @ukwarrior89 haaa, zurich is cooler :P

  • @Maryangel24 Hi, Marya! I totally love your channel. I can speak Portuguese, French and Italian too, and now am very interested in Swiss German as I'm traveling to Bern next year. You rock! I'll be coming here more and more often, probably. Thank you so much! Merci vilmal (hope this is correct, LOL).

  • @Gutoknust hoi! :D aww thank you! and that's awesome! what's your first language? i'm super happy to hear you want to learn SG, however - i teach the dialect spoken in zurich, which is a bit different to the one in bern. hope that doesn't bother you. and yes, that is correct :D bitteschön!

  • @Maryangel24 Hoi! So glad you replied! I'm from Brazil and speak Portuguese as my first language, though I speak English since I was 13. Now, SG sounds like a real challenge to me. I did think learning one more language would be a breeze, but it happens to be so different than the ones I speak! Of course it does not bother me you teach Züritüütsch (Gee, is it what it's called? Please forgive me if I embarrass myself). I'll try and learn the main differences along the way. Bis spöter.

  • @Gutoknust i always try to reply to all my comments :) ooh awesome! how come you want to learn SG though?

definitely not embarrassing yourself as it's perfectly correct! :) bärndütsch and züridütsch (or züritüütsch etc) :)

  • @Maryangel24 Hey, I've just read you're profile and couldn't help but laugh because I love your sense of humor! Are all Swiss girls as witty and fun? Yeah, I decided to learn some SG because, as I said, I'll travel do Switzerland next year and I'm very interested in different cultures and fascinated by languages and people. I believe the minimum I can do is learn some of the local language so I get to interact or at least get people interested in me too... I've sent you a friend request. HYDM.

  • @Gutoknust haha why thank you. i don't think it depends on one's ethnic background or nationality. either you have a screwed up sense of humour (comme moi) or you don't (like all normal people) :D

that's awesome, people will like you if you're that open minded and ready to assimilate or adapt to our culture :)

    accepted :)

  • Züüri düütch

  • @VEN0MXVI jep, züridütsch :D

  • Ja das stimmt :D

  • wo hast du englisch uberhaupt gelernt?I'm starting my youtube vids teaching California valley girl speak,,,lol,,,or california beach bum lingo,,,

  • @bobb22ful haha, valley girl speak... oh dear :D it's like, she said like, but like... like like.. :D

good question. i learnt the basics at school and the rest is self-taught. i've spent heaps of time watching movies in english, listening to the news in english, reading english books, magazines etc. and now i'm studying linguistics in english and english literature, so i have to speak english almost daily anyway :)

  • wow du kannst wirklich gut deutsch sprechen perfect !!!!

  • CHUCHICHESCHTLI :-D

  • @gruflord aah, hesch di entschiede in besserä kanton zcho go läbä :P

  • @Maryangel24 Und DU wirsch Schwizerdütsch Professorin! ^^

  • @Shokukumi hahaha schön wärs :D

  • @Shokukumi haha ich würde auch gerne Schwizerdütsch lernen;-)

  • @unknowngitarrist haha, anytime.

  • where does you interest in languages stem from? i'm very intrigued. I wish I had this much knowledge when I was your age!

  • @santoorchi hmm, that's a good question. i don't really know :) i guess i was raised bilingual and at school, i was always the best at any language, even german although i was a "foreigner". and you know how you start liking things you're good at? i guess the more i started liking it the better i got and the better i got the more i started liking it, haha. may i ask how old you are now and how many languages you speak? :)

  • @Maryangel24 I'm 34 and i speak 12 languages. Like you, i too was the "foreigner" who was quicker to learn the language of his new 'home'. I learned most of these languages later on in my life though. With your knowledge and love for languages, you can conquer any language there is, even Chinese.

  • @santoorchi oooh amazing stuff :) i've made a pact with myself, i'd learn at least 10 languages till my 40th bday :) maybe i can make that 12 too, haha. what languages do you speak? defs my idol, i love people who know multiple languages :) atm i'm studying japanese (not sure if i've mentioned that already?) my next step would be to improve my broken italian and then learn arabic. :)

  • @tovia4singer aww, why thank you very much :) i am originally from serbia, but with serbia's history and judging by my features, i'm pretty sure i have some turkish or middle eastern genes in me, haha :)

  • in germany we dont say "ich aß" but "ich habe gegessen" and thats very close to the swiss german" Ich aß" is only use in written text.

  • @Leo0nerd yeh, maybe i should have clarified that - what i meant is that HG does have the präteritum form, whereas that form does NOT exist in swiss german. not at all. e.g. you guys can say: "sie lachte wie verrückt" we'd say "sie hät glachät wiä gstört". that's what i was trying to show :)

  • @Leo0nerd: It depends on the sophistication of the German speaker. Pure colloquial language is a bad example. The same goes with the increasingly wrong use of subjunctive moods or genitive in colloquial German.

  • @albedoshader i agree with what you said :)

  • Swiss German sounds like Yiddish especially the "kh" or "ch" sound like you want to spit. And both are High German languages.

  • @Lagolop i don't really know what yiddish sounds like unfortunately :) but yeh, lots of kh and ch sounds in SG. what exactly do you mean by "high german"? that's what we call the german which is spoken in germany, but i don't think that's what you were referring to?

  • @Maryangel24

High German as in Alemmanic (as spoken in highlands). I do not mean Hochdeutch as in "standard" modern German. Yiddish is based on Medieval High German and began in the Rhineland. It also has Hebrew words in it. When the Jews travelled eastward to Slavic countries they also borrowed some Slavic terms as well.

  • @Maryangel24 hello! my ear is a bit slow, but when you speak Swiss German, do you roll your R's? And if so, would you roll it even at the end of the word? the beginning? the middle? for example in High German: Rufen, aber, traurig

  • @bleuboia in swiss german, you alway roll your Rs, no matter where they are in the sentence. in high german, you never roll them, the R is either "silent" as in "aber" (e.g. like father in RP) or it's pronounced further back in your mouth, but not rolled. :)

  • @Maryangel24 thanks for the quick response!

  • @bleuboia no worries :)

  • You pushed my vocals xD

    Love :-*

  • @LionCage87 bahaha, sorry about that ;) good on you for giving it a try though :D x

  • 10 points, great video...

    greetings from Chile

  • @Kozako aww, thank you very much :))

  • @maryangel24 what is high school in europe like? are there a lot of cliques there? are there people who think they are COOLER or more popular than everyone else?

  • @ilovcandy091 well, i wouldn't know about europe, but i can tell you about switzerland. it's NOTHING like in the usa, with jocks and cheerleaders (we don't have any, lol) nerds etc. ofc there are groups though. we have skaters and hiphoppers or at least that's what we call them. that's the guys who skate and the guys who wear baggy pants and like to go out and get girls. with girls it's more the "cool and uncool" ones, but it's not too extreme. funnily enough, that's not in HS but 7-9th grade.

  • @Maryangel24 in HS we have all kinds of people, hippies, hiphoppers, punks, tree-huggers, nerds, country children, party skanks etc etc. but we ALL get along and hang out with each other :)

  • @Maryangel24 that's really cool (: but have you ever been to germany or austria? if so, would you say switzlerland, germany and austria are culturally similar (like in food, mannerisms, music etc)? kind of like canada and the usa.

  • @ilovcandy091 oh yes, it's right around the corner, haha :)

hmm well, they have some similarities, but they also have heaps of things that are different. i think that's the case for most countries - like e.g. ireland and england, it's not the same or nz and oz... or canada and the usa - you have many things similar but also many things different :) tho i'd say... i think austria and switzerland are more similar than switz and germany.

  • @Maryangel24 do you like germany or austria more?

  • @ilovcandy091 oh hmm, i have no idea. i've been to germany quite a few times and haven't really been to austria too often, so i can't compare them. :)

  • @Maryangel24 do you get extremely excited when going to those places? i wouldn't be surprised if you don't (bc the distance is so close :P). when i went to germany and austria last year, i LOVED cuz it was COMPLETELY DIFFERENT way of life, and they weren't my neighbors.

  • @ilovcandy091 haha you'd be right, i don't get excited at all tbh :D it just seems like... another city in switzerland, cause it's that close. oh, i'm glad to hear! have you been to switz too?

  • @Maryangel24 the only countries in eur. i've been to are austria and germany. i'd love to visit switz someday bc it's the country with so many languages. :) i replied already, but idk if it went thru. so i answered again. btw, quite a few ppl i know don't even know that austria is actually in eur. they thought i was saying i went to oz. -.- someone asked me whether in austria i saw a lot of kangaroos

  • you have a sexy voice and i love your accent :D

  • @Iasonh ahaha, why thanks! :P

  • Very interesting! Thumbs up!

  • @WhalesLikeMe thank you!! :)

  • i findes so schöön das di ganzi wäut übr üsi schpraach cha lachä =)

i bi bäärnr, ds ghört mä äuä a dä vilä 'äää'

    grüess us bärn =)

  • @KustiIisakki haha so vieli liebät s'schwyzerdütsch! ich bi so überrascht gsi woni immer meh afragä becho han, wils so vieli wönd lärnä. und ja, ich hets a dinere schrift agmerkt ;) wobi mini kollegin us bärn au no "fingäs anstatt findes" seit :D

    grüessli us züri :D

  • thanks for making new videos :D and trying to explain the "ch" sound ahahah :)

    nice earings btw :)

  • @EllyEri96 no worries :D hope you guys will be able to pronounce it now, haha.

    aww, cheers :))

  • @EllyEri96 haha yeah, i sort of can but i have to like reeaaally concentrate on it D:

  • @EllyEri96 haha if you keep practising it will just become natural to you and you won't have to focus that hard anymore! but yay, go you!

  • @Maryangel24 hahaha yeah hopefullly :)

oh and how do you say 'high german' ?

  • @EllyEri96 you say "hochdütsch" in swiss german :D and "schriftdeutsch" in german :)

  • nice earrings. obviously there are many differences bn high german and SG, but wouldn't you say it's easier for a swiss person to learn high german than it is english or chinese or spanish etc.?

  • @ilovcandy091 thank you :)

you're right, it's much easier! the two languages are closely related. :)

  • @uns33ntr4th no worries :D

  • Omg... You look gorgeous :D

And I love how you film your videos in the bathroom xD

You make the "ch" sound sexy hahaha.

Thank you sooo much for doing the first part of the video! It was really helpful! And I like being able to compare the written text of Swiss and High German :D

  • @YouStoleMyTube aww, thank you :D i had just gotten back from town and thought why not make a video while i'm still dressed up. you guys might appreciate it more than all the vids in which i'm hungover XD

hahahaha, it's because the bathroom's the only room with decent lighting!

no worries, i'm really glad this is helping people :) now go and practise, i expect you to be able to say "ch" by next week ;)

  • Oh, thank you - these videos get better and better :)

  • @MoonshineGuitars cheers phil! :)

  • @uns33ntr4th awww, it takes time, i'm sure if you practise you'll be able to do it soon! :))

  • i love hearing you speak german!!!!! very interesting!!

  • @YouveStolenMyEyes haha, cheers hal :) also, in case anyone wondered, there was no bomb in the package :D

  • Ü as in "oops"?

  • @kosmodrone hmm... nope :/ the Ü is like a mix of "eh" and "oo". if you said them both at the same time it'd result in a Ü haha :) i don't reckon there's an english word that has an ü in it. :S
