i woke up with the song in my mind this morning, maybe coz is snowing. from many versions i searched this is one of the best, even if you dont read notes.
bravo eres un genio; tocas con una gran sensibilidad....me gustaria escucharte tocando el tema del secreto de sus ojos que tiene un estilo chopin muy profundo y melancolico.
I've just watched "Awakenings" because I can't go to sleep. I almost cry at the scene that Lenard and his girl frined are dancing with this tune. Thank you.
Very nice Job. I'm learning it myself now in an obsessive kind of way which this beautiful tune merits. I heard it for the first time last week as performed, rearranged , by the Birdland Big Band. I'm hooked.
man. you must love that tune as much as i do. that is an awesome feat of ear and muscle memory. excellent feel man. keep playing man. don't stop. ✫✫✫✫✫
The bitter sweet feeling this song bleeds, must have been in full effect for the writer, Randy Newman. I do not believe I've ever heard such emotion in sound.
Actually, Randy Newman finally published the sheet music to this and I have it in a collection of his stuff. It is one of the finest tunes in his entire output. I love all of his music, but there remains something very special about the soundtrack to Awakenings...
Congratulations to your ear. You should work on the way in which to play. Playing such a winsome track you should tell a story sounds, and not just strike. More feeling. But generally very good, that you have such a talent. Derive maximum enjoyment from it.
Pretty darn close. Good ear. I'm an ear player too and the melody has been haunting me since "Awakenings" aired on HD Net Movies. I can't get the pickin' song out of my head. But I've found if I play it over and over, the tune doesn't loom so prominent in my mind. Kudos to Randy Newman. His songs have always evoked so much emotion for me. Dad passed away 4 weeks ago and my wife left me 9 months ago. I'm a single dad w/2 teens and the song helps me grieve. Thanks for your tasty homage.
...it is a very sad story, Arnold! Please accept my anonymous condolences, and Be Strong!! ...this song (Dexter's Tune), and that scene in the movie (Awakenings) is by now a piece of my heart too, deeply inside, near the core, forever. If You search for "Awakenings" here on YouTube, I think the 1st result that comes up is that scene from the movie (with the original text and music). ...You know what? - maybe You could listen to some Beethoven (Coriolan Overture, Piano Sonatas, etc)! :)

You have a great ear, that's why I'm surprised that you are way off with the third chord, left hand... The melody is La la la la la didi da. The fifth La is where you hit the wrong left hand chord. I'm not sure what the correct chord is but it's not the one you are playing. Other than that, everything else sounds smashing.
I've got the transcription to this work. It's just a transcription... I've written every note played by the musician on that track. But, there's a lot to do when it comes to "perform" this piece: It's so touching... Word of advice: play it right after having watched the film from wich this music is...
Real: Does that mean you're willing to E-mail it to someone upon request?? I'm sure all of us pianists would apreciate that since the sheet music for this piece seems to be so hard to find.
Google 4 the following: "dexter tune sheet" ...the 1st result that comes up links you to the sheet music. ...and maybe someone can help you with it on those parts, where you're not sure, or maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing for you to learn to read (if not on-the-fly, then just "offline") such scores considering you play so good! It could be a next step for you:) Cheers!
Wonderful! I've always loved this song. I figured it out by ear for guitar a couple of months ago. Now I just have to learn to play it. :) You did fantastic!
You're more than "darn close" - How about wonderfully brilliant?! I've tried watching you play, but still can't get it right, so I'm going to have to settle for the sheet music.
For those of you like me, who wondered where to find it, "Dexter's Tune" was published in Randy Newman's "Anthology, Vol. 2"
Very nice. Amazing for figuring it out by ear. You've even got the feeling down. Sounds like the way Dexter Gordon played it on the movie. I heard Randy Newman wrote this piece. I never knew he could write like that. Good work-it's VERY darn close.
Being a musician and having played with classically trained "Segovia's" and self taught "Reinhardts", I'd take the self taught musician over the classically trained musician as they tend to understand whats more important in the music and you cannot teach "art" only method.
I'm truly impressed you figured this out by ear. There are some pretty nonstandard (that's an understatement) chords in this song, and you nailed nearly all of them.
You gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes! this was amazing... I can't believe you played it by ear! this is the best version I've ever heard of this song... it even brought back all the emotions that I felt when I watched the movie... I loved it!
Interesting change around 1'52. What I hear is clear, the right term to use is a different story. Instead of 'change' what would be the proper term???
I've been trying to get a name to this piece of music for months. I think I've seen Awakenings in excess of 50 times and this music just moves me like no other. Very well played - loved it! Thanks for sharing - 5***** and favourited!
I am very familiar with the original version from the movie and have a copy. This is a very good interpretation, and is played as it should be. The sense of hesitancy is appropriate.
The feeling I get from this song is like no other. Strange how pain and sadness is evident in sound. Emotion in itself is one of the greatest mysteries. I loved this, thanks for the video and music.

I listened to the music and it reminded me of the choirs words:
Hey wont you play, some body done some body wrong song..........
to make me feel at home?
while I miss my baby, while I miss my baby............ That is Dexters theme song.
Randy Newman took if from that song in my opinion.
