This is one of hte most incredable cars ever, they take parts out of the engine and run it and set records and some of you idiots are talking about Toyotas and shit like that. Don't you understand what they just related? This thing is an unprecidented story, it's absolutely amazing and it's right over yer heads. Go watch some crash tests or something, this you don't appreciate for what it is.
Safety and environmental legislation for starters. Demand for fuel economy for another. Thats what engineers had to concern themselves with in the 70's and 80's for the most part. The result? Cars are heavier and more complicated than they were 40 years ago. My 1971 midget outhandles my 1992 toyota corolla easily.
"BUT a Corolla and a Midget are not even in the same league." perhaps not, all I am saying with that one is that in the corolla I have to take this one off ramp 20 mph slower than in my midget because of its understeering tendencies and higher center of gravity.
Now crash worthiness and emission controll are worthwhile efforts, but in pursuing those, it becomes harder to get other aspects taken care of. Thats why by the 1980's cars were slower than in the 1960's
These MG's were made with one purpose, speed. They don't have to worry about comfort, long term reliability, emission control, crash survivability etc. Its all about speed. Now if speed is what makes you happy, then yes cars have gotten worse because they've made far too many compromises along the way. If you like crashing and walking away from your crashes alive, then cars have gotten better.
I was talking about the record breakers. You know, like the EX-120, EX-127, EX-135. EX-179, EX-181 etc. I was responding to Diesel science's comment. Basically, Race cars have a different focus than passenger cars. The EX-181 had a 300hp engine and did nearly 250 MPH!

@BHFProductions Possible if the body is VERY lightweight and aerodynamic

I would not call emission control and crashworthyness bad. BUT a Corolla and a Midget are not even in the same league.

what? MG's are slow with 70 horsepower, how is that speedy? They do corner very well though.
