I just saw this movie and I loved it. Its pretty controversial because its about a very sensitive period (immediately after the war), but its pretty interesting how some things are depicted. I personally feel that it doesn't have any political agenda, but that's me. The story is actually based on a real ex-South Vietnam soldier. I recommend this movie. Watch it (especially if you're anti-Communist), and see how much the war echoes into the present day (sadly).
i think vietnam filmmakers try too hard to be just like the rest of the world in terms of filmmaking style and this is where vietnamese films fail to entertain. we should leads the direction of our films to fit our society not what is the standard---explicit sex and violence for no other reasons but to see booty and blood....geez no wonder the viet audience prefers cai luong over this the world of "film"

At least they try to break what was old, and bring something new in; and so what with the blood and the booty; it's real what those people was living in, ok. If it was tarantino or miike then it's totally cool, but when it's a vietnamese director.."they're trying too hard"...
actually i agree with you baon2219..have you seen those 60s and 70s viet movies? good script great acting... special effects and etc may not be as good but overall they were great films
