They make amazing pets, i kept one of the common ones a while back which died from a mismoult, since then though i've had more success with a pair of the large ones which have been doing fine, if you get the conditions right which are easy their fine :)

I think invertebrates are more interesting. This means insects, arachnids, myriapods (centipedes and millipedes), and even crustaceans.
