We're doing the original production at college, and I think that this version is SO much better, the songs are more fun for the cast to perform too and the parts are spread more evenly. I LOVE this song :D
Soooo much better than You're the one that I want. That song is ok, but it just doesn't fit well with the time period the show is supose to take place. It sounds more like a 70's disco number and the musical is set in the 1950's.
People have to remember that when the film was made it was being targeted toward a teen & younger ages audience so they couldn't have as much of the raunch in it to get the PG rating. And changing some of the songs in order to capitalize on the trends of the day is just Hollywood business. Even though I am a huge fan of the film, when I saw it I was ten and went out & got the cast LP to learn about the show and enjoyed it so I am not a hater of the orig. show.
Prefer YTOTIW, but I really want to see the original production. It sounds a whole lot raunchier and I like the idea of seing the less santiized, hollywood version.
@NyeTunes I was just telling friends about that aspect of the Broadway show the other night when we were watching the movie on TV!! But as I said before, as good as this song is, it would not have sold records in 1978.........You're The One That I Want, in my opinion, worked quite well for the film, not taking away from the Broadway show, mind you!
@NyeTunes haha I am Patty in my schools production and it is so much fun when Sandy punches me!!! hahaha it's really funny!!! I wish they would have put it in the movie too...
@VioletSpanxx I just saw that version at my high school. You heard it right! My high school was not afraid of crossing the line and doing really dirty stuff. Our director was a friend of the original Patty Simcox on Broadway, and so they brought back a lot of the raunchier lines that were inexplicably sanitized for subsequent productions.
I met Barry Bostwick the other day at a movie convention in London. We had a chat about Grease and how they destroyed the original story in order to get some hit singles into the 70's charts. It's great that the original recordings still exist so that people can see how it was meant to be.
@SuperJawsfan Well, *sort of* original. The REAL original production (pre-Bostwick) was never recorded, meaning that cut songs like "Foster Beach" and, erm, "Kiss It", are lost in time. At least, until that production is revived in Chicago next year.
@SuperJawsfan No destruction, in my opinion. Hollywood is a business. This song is great, but would not have sold anything in 1978. You're The One That I Want is still more associated w/Grease than anything that was in the original show.......to the point that they even redid the show w/the 70's tunes. I like the original but for movie making, the "new" songs were just a better fit for the time.
@TidusJRStrife No kidding! Someone seriously needs to remake the movie and make it true to the original production! A lot of people would be pissed off, but Grease purists like myself would be overjoyed!
my school's doing Grease for our spring musical. even though I'm sad we're not doing "You're the one that I want", this one'll be fun too. It was the origonal in the musical.
