  • the legends of steam one on one what a site, realy awsome!

  • Who owns the SP & Santa Fe units

  • @ble643 Both diesels are owned by the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.

  • i don't understand why the sp 4449 has black headlamp frames that is so weird i like it without that?

  • you know what would be awesome a 4 way race between 844 4449 216 and 611

  • @brickmaster24 that would be epic.

  • GOTTA PIC OF THIS EVENT

  • Now they could race the 844, 4449, and the 3751 up the pass now

  • @clinchfieldns that would be very epic. u think we could talk em into it?

  • I wonder if Doyle and the 844 driver placed bets to see who would win in that race? lol

  • Awesome stuff! Maybe they'll do it again for the 100th anniversary when i'm like 55, lol

  • nice video by the way i'm cbolanz fan of sp 4449 how are ya doin

  • Super Awesome video. This was truly a one-time event. Thanks for sharing it.

  • Anyone know what happened to that nathen 6-chime on 4449? it has an amazing range! sometimes it sounds like 2472 and then other times it sounds really high pitched like in this video from 3:09 to about 3:21

  • I don't know what happened to the 6-chime, but I do know from a professional video that the whistle in this clip isn't an SP 6-chime

  • @Railfan3751 I think I heard from a Goodheart production vid that, at the time, 4449 was also carrying a whistle off of a Chicago, Burlington& Quincy (Burlingron route) O-5 Class 4-8-4, as well as her previous whistle and air horn.

  • That was the firemans' whistle which was stolen in the early 90's.

  • The 6-chime is on 844, SP 4449 had the "hooter" whistle! -Brandon

  • I've been in the cab of SP 4449, and its quite a beautiful steam locomotive, its home is Portland Oregon, and that is where I live, I also saw the SP&S 700 and another steam locomotive being restored along with several diesels and passenger cars, and its in the Brooklyn Rail Yard at the Brooklyn Roundhouse, heck, I've even asked to work at the Round House.

  • Too bad we can't see a triple race between UP 844, SP 4449, and ATSF 3751. I'd pay to see it.

  • If memory serves right, the 4449 had some problems with the fuel oil, that's the reason for the black smoke...OK. before I get blasted for that remark, yes I know that it was heading up grade and yes I realize that maybe the fireman put some sand in the fire box to clean out the flues, but being the grandson of an old hoghead you could get this type of smoke with bad fuel also

  • which one "won"?

  • Which one "won"?

I think we all did. If ya catch my drift.

  • Yeah that would have be awesome to see.

  • UP 844 won if you see right at the end, I know the angles are different but it was quite clear, even though the Daylight could blow the 844 any day lol

  • Yeah, but 844s roundhouse mate, 3985 would put the smackdown on 4449 when under load every day...

except during this when I believe that 3985 was in the shop getting some TLC, and I beleve it's second set of drivers machined so they would match the other set again. :)

  • I was talking about 844 and 4449, not 3985, the only other steam locomotive that would be a challenge to 3985 is N&W 1218, 3985 is the largest running steam locomotive presently, and 1218 is the second largest and is the strongest running presently.

  • I know. It's just a matter of Wyoming pride. :D

  • Yeah me too, Oregon pride xD

  • Our NKP#765 could outrun either in it's heyday, now?Hoosier pride.:)

  • what about the Pennsy JS-1's?

  • I'm still waiting for the 3751 to go through Cajon Pass again, but I think it could take either the 4449 or the 844 any day :p

  • I don't man, it doesn't have the HP the other one's do. The 2926, when it's restored, could take all of them on :)

  • I have an old tripod, if you like come over and you can have it.

    .

Together you and it could make the world a better place.

    .

    Favorited.

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • You know,

your Dad and you may have been on pentrex when your dad shot the SP,UP, and ATSF units!

    Lucky!

I wish I was there then! LOL.

  • I wished both steamers came back to California again! I think it's been nearly nine years since either one set foot here!

    Glenn.

  • Make sure it's official, I'd love to head down there myself to see the event!

  • Too cool!

  • Few years ago I came upon a rural grade xing in S WI. Lights flashing. Train coming. Couldn't see it though due to all the trees, bushes and curve in track. Waiting as usual then all of a sudden I see black smoke, hear wistle-not horn & think WTF?? All of a sudden a BIG ass steam loco comes barreling full throttle through the xing. I was too busy sh----g to count the wheels. I mean one would have Zero expectation of this happening but there it was. Great video, Thanks again.

  • Holy double smokes! I was there that day at Union Station! For a quick moment, I thought I saw my friend who was with me. I followed the Daylight out on foot as far as I could run. Once in a while great things happen.

    Great video. Thanks

  • I wish I was there. I need a time machine,NOW!

  • 'When you were very young...'---1989??? I thought this was going to be OLD video!!! Thanks for making me feel old!!!!!

Great video--the low YouTube quality makes it look like model trains--kinda neat!

  • Well, looks like the 4449 won that one.

  • what's funny is 8444 dwarfs 4449 in physical size

  • not at all, in fact, the 4449 out weighs the 844 by a few tons.

  • She would've if her traction box wouldn't of overheated! I for one wish me and my dad took the day off to see her and 8444! That even also cause I-15 to stop dead in their tracks!

  • OOOOH typical of her. the '49, if they didn't break something on her, then they didn't take her out of the round house!

  • I have a dvd all about this event, maybe I will upload it.

  • Wow! All I can say. Five Star. Added to favorites.

  • Very nice.

  • very good video!!

  • NICE!

  • Finally get to see what old-timer railfans often talk about. Thanks for sharing this unique event. Having the lineup of SP, UP, and AT&SF E and F units is a great bonus!
