  • Can you tell me if mine is refined or not. Its yellow it was sold to to me in 4 BIG chunks when I break it, it can be kinda gritty but when I rub it in my hands its very creamy and heavy

Its no particular brand(I bought it from a guy selling oils on the hood lol)

I don't know to much about shea butter except I like it on my skin and ends of my hair

  • @mrseazye Shea butter sometimes comes in chunks and sometimes has a gritty feel to it and yes rubbing it makes it heavy and creamy. It sounds like real Shea butter. Yes I love it on my skin too! :-)

  • @KelferMookie?!?? Shea butter sold in Tupperware is the real stuff??? LMBO! I've tried that 3 different kinds and I'm sorry- it's not pure. It doesn't work well on the hair or skin. Shea is supposed to be a good blend of creamy/ oily- not Vaseline like and consistently 'crunchy- custurdy'. I live my dreads and I'll put no such crap in it. " genuine Tupperware Shea butter- ROFL :)

  • if your shea butter didnt come from africans it isn't real. Real shea butter doesn't come in fancy packages... It comes in a tupper wear container or a plastic ziplock bag.

  • @KelferMookie There is no question as to whether or not I am using real Shea butter. I am using real Shea butter. Shea butter comes in all sorts of packages, it just depends on what company is supplying it. I have seen "Shea butter" supplied in tupperwear that was not real Shea butter and falsely advertised as such. The company I get it from is reliable, and purity standards are upheld otherwise they would get sued left and right. Perhaps you should be the one weary.

  • @1ballerina i aint so much about the purity standards and all that bullcrap... would you rather buy shea butter from a fake company trying to make money, or support your own people who have been making shea butter for thousands of years... I'm just saying... but whatever.... Dont approve this comment... just read it.

  • @KelferMookie If I could find a company that can ship directly from Africa and can guarantee purity then I would be all for purchasing Shea butter that way. I have looked and have yet to find a company like that..that can guarantee purity, and purity is very important to me so I buy it from a company that can guarantee pure Shea butter that has not been extracted with the use of hexane. If you know of a company with those standards let me know and I'll look into buying from them.

    Peace.

  • @1ballerina just buy an african block of shea on ebay or amazon.com and make it yourself. If you don't already make your own, then lemme tell you making it is a lot easier than you may think. Being natural means being self sufficient, and making it on your own is a lot cheaper than having it made and shipped to you. Just youtube videos on how to make it.

  • @MagdaleneMayhem Hi, this video is just about the different consistencies in Shea butter. I don't have it shipped I buy it locally. I make mixtures of Shea butter with oils etc. at home although I mostly just use the butter by itself. This video only shows Shea butter, no mixes, in slightly different forms depending on the extent to which it has been refined. I also buy unrefined African Shea butter but I buy it from a local health food store and plan to make whips with it :-)

  • @MagdaleneMayhem Oh, I'm sorry I meant to respond to KelferMookie. Your videos are great! You're doing a wonderful job educating people about natural hair treatments that are good to your body as well as the earth. I really did intend to respond to KelferMookie and let her know if she is looking for a specific consistency she may want to try making it on her own. Thank you for your uploads!

  • @MagdaleneMayhem Oh sorry :-) ..your comment did get me thinking about trying out some ideas on whipping up a shea butter mix though, so thank you for sparking the idea. No worries and thank you! :-)

  • @1ballerina

I order Real unrefined shea butter from etsy.com/shop/NaturalCos site all the time.

They are the best around, you dont have to worry about getting ripped off or getting fake shea.

    etsy.com/shop/NaturalCos

  • @ALEXNMARCIA Hi, I also use real raw unrefined shea butter in addition to the refined shea butter I use here. I have videos on raw unrefined shea butter, I make whips and I buy my shea butter at a local health food store :)

  • @KelferMookie I finally found some good unrefined fairly traded, pure, African Shea butter. I put a link in the video.

  • Have you ever tried the unrefined organic shea butter from Coastal Scents? It is the best I've ever tried, especially on the skin. It's very conditioning; a little goes a long way. It took my stretch marks away. I use it on my hair and my skin. I use to use refined shea butter for years, and it worked pretty good for me, but when I discovered the unrefined butter I found there is no comparison. I use to use the Now brand too.

  • @azureblu1 I haven't tried unrefined Shea butter yet. I will be giving it a try some time soon :-) Yes I also love Shea butter for skin, it feels amazing, I also use it on my face. I will certainly try it!

  • where did u get the refined shae butter and what is it called...i have hair like yours and i am also hispanic and black and have been trying to find something nautral but moisturising for my locks. thanks.

  • @MyLala0909 I buy it at Whole Foods and also at a local health food store. It can also be found online. It is from a company called "Now Solutions" it is pure Shea butter, moderately refined without the use of hexane. Shea butter is the stuff! :-)

  • I think they need to "mix the batch" more.

  • @Ryushai Oh interesting; yeah that one batch was so different from all the other jars I have purchased from that company, but it still worked wonderfully :-)

  • Sorry, i meant mellowgirl09

  • @livgal6 i prefer to put any light oil or water based conditioner on first before putting on shea butter. Its always the last thing i use, like puttin on a coat before going outside, lol

  • @keishaj777 Nice!

  • I agree... The refined versioned feels very moisturizing. It's the perfect quantity and ideal when I don't have time to whip my own batch. For your dry version, maybe you could melt it and blend your favorite ingredients into it to make it more moisturizing. Thx for sharing!

  • @LOATODAY Ah that sounds like a good idea, melting it and mixing in some ingredients, thanks!

  • i tryed the yellow shea butter before in i did not like it do to the smell, but i never know some of them were white shea butter, is there a different smell to them, i would like to try the white shea butter, in is it better to use this one then the yellow one?.....thanks so very much for sharing :)

  • @NycSecretTreasures The ultra refined is white, the other one looks white on camera but it is a light yellow. The ultra refined doesn't really have a smell, the light-yellow regular refined has a little smell but not really strong. Like when I put it on my skin and hair I can't smell it on me :)

  • @1ballerina i am going to give the ultra refined white one , thank you for getting back to me on that, you are always very helpful , great video , :) have a wonderful day

  • I love unrefined shea butter. I can't imagine who would find the smell offensive. As far as unrefined goes, natural unrefined shea butter can either be yellow or white; the color depends on the tree and what part of Africa it came from. I prefer yellow from Ghana. Refined shea butters have lost some of their better attibutes aka vitamins and in fact, you can determine the potency of the butter by the smell.

  • @margeryehannah This is good to know! I have heard some complaints about the smell but I think I will be giving it a try despite what I have heard about the smell. My favorite, minimally refined still has a little smell to it and the smell is not bad, it just smells like a tree which is quite nice. The ultra refined (least favorite) has no smell at all. I will look for the darker yellow unrefined to see how it works out. Thanks!

  • I know what you mean, some are sooo grainy it's like forever before you can smooth it down. thanks for showing..as usual your curls are gorgeous...

  • @killakahl Thank you :)

  • I love love love your tips from your videos! I have been using nothing but organic jojoba oil and coconut oil in my hair and my hair stopped breaking off! I am def. trying shea butter to try! Thank you!

  • @livgal6 You're welcome!

  • @livgal6 I second that, I appreciate the tips also 1ballerina. We have similar hair texture and I couldn't figure out how to properly moisturize my hair. I have also started using pure jojoba oil and coconut oil and it has helped a lot. But I do have a question. Does anyone recommend putting these products on in any particular order or does it not matter. I've heard some products seal moisture in and some moisturize and I want to make sure I'm doing it right.

  • @mellowgirl09 I notice that some women apply oils to wet hair; it looks like it works well for them so it probably works. I used to apply a synthetic oil to my hair while wet & it worked well, but with natural oils, I only apply them to my hair when it is dry. I wash my hair, then condition, I leave in some leave in conditioner, then I braid or twist my hair up, I wait for it to dry, then I add the oils. The oils add lubrication and helps to keep hair flexible making it less likely to break :)

  • MyHairFetish is a hair twin of mine and just said her hair doesn't like Shea:( After seeing your vid, maybe she had the wrong kind! I'll keep you posted:) This video was right on time!! Thanks!!

  • @OurLadyLourdes Cool let me know!

  • I was wondering why you prefer regular refined over raw unrefined shea butter? I have never tried the refined or ultra refined one before. Great video.

  • @NaturalNola86 I use a minimally refined Shea butter because it has no scent to it. I will be diving into some unrefined shea butter to see what I can do with it though :)

  • BTW, love your videos. You are very informative and resourceful. Thank you!

  • @CCNYCA You're welcome!

  • When the Shea Butter is ultra refined, aren't all it's natural vitamins extracted from the final product and then bleached to reach the final product?

(I believe that this is what ultra-refined Shea Butter is.)

Does unrefined Shea Butter not sit well on curly hair?

    Thanks in advance :-)

  • @CCNYCA It depends on the refining process. Shea butter can be refined using just water and clay filters can also be used so the smell of unrefined shea butter can be removed. It still has vitamins etc. But some refining processes do remove vitamins and can introduce chemicals.

I use shea butter that has been minimally refined, still has vitamins and is free of chemicals.

Unrefined shea butter is good for curly hair also, it is just that it has a smell that may be unpleasant for some :)

  • Thanks for this, I havent come across a white shea butter yet, they are all yellow then ones that I have seen out here so far, even the ones that say pure! xx

  • @LeiLei08 My favorite one is a light yellow, the ultra refined one is almost totally white. A dark yellow is a possible indication that it is an unrefined butter which should also be good to use :)

  • heyy!! nice to see you again!! you are so right, i have tried the raw unrefined shea butter, my hair doesn't like it, the uktra refined one i don't like too much, but the regular refined shea is working better for me, still not my favourite butter, but the refined one i can work with!

  • @louloumatou Cool yeah I am the same way about the two refined butter types. I will give the unrefined butter a try to see if I can somehow work with it, but I am not in a hurry since I love this regular refined kind so much :)

  • Thank you so very much for sharing this!

    Much Love.

    Have a lovely weekends.

  • @Sallyakerti <3

  • Where do you find your shea butter?

  • @dreabatyah I buy it at a natural/health food store in the cosmetics/lotions/oils section of the store. It can also be found on Amazon[dot]com or other online vendors. The company I really like is "Now Solutions" although there are other companies that sell good quality butters as well.

  • If you've ever tried unrefined shea butter then what is the difference between the unrefined vs the refined shea butters that you use? Is it just that one is more creamier, less oily and thicker than the other?

  • @starrsvm I haven't tried unrefined shea butter, I have heard that it has a 'bacon' smell to it, so I have been holding off. Unrefined shea butter is supposed to be creamy. I have found creamy, thick refined shea butter without it being chemically processed and without the unrefined smell. I'll be getting some unrefined shea butter and will be doing a comparison after becoming familiar with it. I am really happy with the shea butter I am using right now though :)

  • Thanks for sharing- have you tried L'Occitane's 100%shea butter?.. I've been putting it on my face for almost 6 years ..i just turned 35 in Nov 2010. I truly believe that shea butter is.. if not the best for skin and hair!!!

  • @bijoubird Yum the L'Occitane shea butter sounds wonderful. I love using shea on my face, thank you for the suggestion, and yes I totally agree with you about shea being the best stuff for skin and hair :D
