  • The metric system is really no problem, and switching to the metric system isn't as difficult as some people think. We did it in Australia without fuss in the 1970s, as did New Zealand and all the rest of the Commonwealth.

  • US protection of Imperial System is a political thing, I believe. During the elections they have this state-coloring thing, you know red states / blue states. If you look at this color-map you will see that a huge amount of people support the traditional conservative party - the republicans. And it show that a big percentage doesn't want to turn away "from the old ways". So attacking the Imperial System is a good way to scare off the voters.

  • There is a problem about your space orbiter argument. When we ask why NASA engineers did not know that the numbers were not metric we find that the units were not written down. The NASA incident show the importance of writing down the units and not a superiority of the metric system. I prefer imperial because of its advantages.

  • Really? What are its advantages?

  • Well one advantage is for baking it is easier to use cup, table spoons and tee spoons. With metric you are suppose to weigh the ingredients. It is faster to use a dry measuring cup too measure ingredients and the math is simpler when you need too double a recipe. A second advantage is 1 ounce of whiskey has the same alcohol content of a 1/2 pint. That's why bartenders use imperial. There are more advantages need I go on.

  • I have a set of metric measures for cooking, 50g, 100g 250g etc, nothing different. And for things like alcohol content...it should come as no surprise that such ratios occur...the measures of spirits and so on are the 'traditional' methods that evolved when the imperial system was in widespread use.

Those aren't advantages, merely things that have occurred over time.

In time, the metric system take over, seeing as 91% of the world uses it was only invented 200 years ago. The trend continues.

  • What is a "set of metric measures"? How do they measure things in grams ie(50g, 100g, 250g)? If i was too measure things in grams I would need a scale. As per spirits you are just talking around my arguments. 1 ounce of whiskey has the same alcohol content as a 1/2 pint. I think this is a valid point the fact that it is because it is evolved from when metric was used is irrelevant. There are no units in the metric system used to serve alcohol.

  • They are a selection of small deep 'spoons' in various sizes, if you need 200g of flour, you measure two 100g spoonfuls out. Google for them.

Alcohol is sold in bottles labeled in centilitres or litres. Measures of spirits in a bar often sold as an imperial unit simply because that is the traditional way of doing it, not by any 'advantage' in doing so. Although there now exist 25ml measures for alcohol that I see more and more.

  • Great video Jarls. Believe me, as a medical professional, you do speak for me!

BTW, by some estimates it cost the US $1 trillion per year not to metricate. Not exactly pocket change.

  • Yes and as a native speaker of spanish I must say everyone should convert to spanish only. Spanish makes sooo much more sense than english and translating is just too hard!!!

  • 94% of the world uses the metric system. Only 350 million people speak spanish as a native language.

    Your argument is invalid.

  • Its not that. More people speak English than Spanish, so why should I learn Spanish when it would make more sense for Spanish speakers to learn English?

I admit and fully agree one global language would make things a lot easier, but sadly there are people rabidly opposed to that and are doing everything they can to preserve languages that only a handful of people speak. Some people just can't see the bigger picture unfortunately.

  • You wrote "I admit and fully agree one global language would make things a lot easier." It sound a bit ex stream to me. It is almost as if you are just trying too get a rise out of people. Are you just trying to get a rise out of people?

  • Pardon? A 'rise' out of people? If everyone on the planet spoke the same language....how could that be anything but a good thing?

  • If you are a bit familiar with programming, you'd know that Language is not just a means to exchange information. Language defines our way of thinking. One language is better for delivering precise structured thoughts or ideas, while some other is better suited to express emotions.

  • To hell with the Imperial System.
