that was a tough year, because 3 of those 5 nominees just happened to give incredible performances. Joaquin and Heath were also both equally deserving.
Hoffman is such an amazing actor! He can go from playing a funny character (Along Came Polly) to a serious character (Capote) with such grace and ease. In a land full of talentless celebrities, he's one of the true actors! Amazing.
PSH is one of the 3 or 4 best film actors alive today withour a doubt. I think as far as pure charachter portrayal, the only one is his league may be Daniel Day lewis.
@Zulzon80 So because they're older you won't include them? Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman will go down in history as two of the finest actors this country ever produced. Age does not matter when compared to talent.
@marKism69 I put Sean Penn in there as well. Sean Penn, Daniel Day-Lewis and Philip Seymour Hoffman are the three single greatest male actors alive today. If those three were in a film together my life would be complete.
If we could go back in time, which I know we can't, but if we could: to have given Heath Ledger the oscar that year, while he was here to enjoy the honor of it, and Philip Seymour Hoffman in 2008, when he was already nominated. I'm still so glad Hoffman won for "Capote", it was undoubtedly the best performance that year; a true stand-out. It just kills me to see Heath in the audience having just lost with no knowledge he would win only two years later but too late ;( There are no words.
My God this was such a STRONG year for best actor. In another year, any of these guys would have won the prize. Wow! The compettion was so STRONG! moreover, all the actors were 40 or younger exepct for Stratham. That is rare as well.
I think that Phillip Seymour Hoffman was the correct choice, but once again, any of them were worthy of the oscar. An excellent group of nominees!
Heath ledger was great, but I people should not say that he deserved to win this year. This was Brokeback Mountain he acted in and not The Dark Knight. It was really between Hoffman and Phoenix. While Capote was well portrayed, Phoenix's Johnny Cash was unreal. He should have won.
@walterreallyy Have you watched Brokeback Mountain? Watch it again. Certainly TDK is the popular choice, but many consider Brokeback not just to be Heath's greatest performance, but one of the greatest of the decade. Regardless, the inspired debate just shows it was a very strong category that year, and that is a good thing. Judging great acting is like trying to determine which diamond is shinier, either way, you're comparing gems.
@bobjangle11 All fairness.....are you kidding? Everyone of those actors except maybe Terrance deserved a nomination and gave GREAT STRONG performances. To say he didn't have much competition is quite the ridiculous statement. I loved Philip in Capote and he very well deserved this Oscar, but Joaquin and Heath would have also been VERY deserving of it as well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Philip Seymour Hoffman while I was on vacation in
Denver in the bar of the Brown Palace Hotel in March 2008 and although I told him
an interesting story about taking a tour of the REAL Truman Capote's house many
years before and complimenting him on his great performance, I still told him I think
Heath Ledger deserved to win more for BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. He laughed
out loud. Very talented actor though. That was a tough year for Best Actor.
