Very talented lady, wonderful voice. I'm probably being a bit anal here but she didn't start with rap. She came onto the music scene singing rap but in truth, like so many black performers, she got her start singing in church.
I always knew :the Queen, had it in her,,,love to hear her when she sings ballads,,,thats what their called, right? lol But, my heart is with Phoebe Snow, r.i.p..
She didn't do to bad... but the difference between her and Phoebe is this. Phoebe voice is so versatile. Phoebe can arrange her voice at so many levels on one song as she does. I can't dismiss the acoustic guitar that she herself played as she sung this phenomenal song which even enhance it more. Nice someone wanted to sing this song, but there's only one person that mastered this tune... Phoebe Snow!

Why bother w/ a remake if you sing it the exact same way as the original? The mildly updated musical arrangement was good, too bad she didn't alter her stinging style and make the song her own. Still, its a classic song and will last longer than Queen Latifah and Phoebe Snow combined.
I think it's great. How would you prefer her to sing it...ghetto/rap style? That's the cool thing about Latifah...she can go from rap style to classy.
I figure that sometimes we forget that singers are regular folks like us and sometimes they simply want to do something because THEY ENJOY IT doing it (that way).
And for me...well thats a good enuff reason for anyone to remake anything in anyway...cuz they enjoyed doing it 'like that'.
Wow...What a TRUE TALENT! From her background in whole 'nuther genre of music to do this JAZZY BREEZY Chicago-Like classic is the mark of TRUE caliber!
no offense ...intended.got my support too. just remember how we get turn out away from ourselves or away from representing our depth. like toni braxton came out beautiful natural look the next thing i know i see her paraded nude on a cover. dng! that is the same for envogue. they looked like someones beautiful african daughters then after one year of being worked on they came out looking totally different. true we can do it how we want but what happened when we dont wanna be that of our most
aaahhh...rap is what she started with. and i really don 't think that it should be dissed. but d..!! she put on this "dress"?? and bone straightening her hair with a horse tail on the bak and sing like this..yall act like she done did somethin and cuz she is approved by these folk she is classy. da...!! what is classy. i want my African Queen back.
Hmmmm. . .actually she first learned jazz, then went to rap, and now she has come full circle. . .if you like her as much as you claim, perhaps you should get to know Dana?
it is true that i dont know of her past only that that i have seen. so i stand to be educated. however, i still see what masses see. like i said no offense ment but wanted to share my experience of us. thanks for the reply.
la dont need no approval from nobody. it aint classy so much as mature. by being such a force in the mainstream, she opens doorways. she can do whatever the frak she wants and she got my full support.
the voice the singing is beautiful ...but d...! what happened to the beautiful powerful African Queen Latiyfah?
Back in the day you empowered us with your image and music of empowerment for us and for yourself. Not meaning any offense but you look disempowered in this image.
that is scarey...the image change.... what happens/happened to us...
rap is no class not low class.... the credibility given to the "artists" in that field by the media and the industry is as disgraceful as it is undeserved.
Im not sure if using the N-word, calling gay people Fagg*ts (which comes from a killing machine used by buring people alive at the steak. the bush they used to start it is called a faggot), and calling women B*tches and Hoes would qualify as "classy".
But I recess that statement.
We have decerned that all people have class, just some more than others.
I always thought she had such a beautiful voice, so glad she sings jazz, now.

Queen Latiffa did a nice job on this. She's no Phoebe Snow by any means but this is still an enjoyable version of the song.

This is a woman who started out in all things RAP MUSIC.
She has classed it up and has become one of my dearest celebrity.
All black women should be this classy.
What am I saying?
ALL PEOPLE IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SO CLASSY!
LauraBeachnut 3 years ago 13
So are you saying rap is low class? I do agree all people should be classy. But expression shouldn't be so limited.

Whats unclassy about rap music? Yeah there are some unclassy songs but what genre of music doesn't have those?
