they are going to be sooooooo disapointed when they find out people are going to "borrow" things a lot. It will give them sooo much work and nothing to gain (almost nothing)
every retail store deals with this to some degree, and it does get abused, but if it doesn't make a difference to their bottom line, then we will not see a difference. This is a good customer service policy, which may increase their sales because now people will not have to worry about returning the product if they have to. Also, this may stop people from putting best buy stuff up on ebay or any of the other auction sites out there.
im from the uk so i dont know if things are different there to here, but iv bought hundreds of electronics from various places which iv decided later on that perhaps i shouldnt have spent my money and iv returned no questions asked and got every penny back.
To be honest, I never thought to "rent" something after I heard about the new policy. I almost feel that bringing it up in a video like this is just giving people bad ideas.
I mean, the people who usually abuse policies like this are generally assholes and jerks. In my opinion, most of these people aren't smart enough to come up with a scam like buying something to use for a limited time only to return it when they're done using it.
But I agree with the message, this is a good thing for buyers
You're naive if you think stores will actually take back any device if you've used it and allow a scheme like the one you portray. I live in a country where a 14-day return policy is provided by law. Basically: They have to take your stuff back - no questions asked, no fees paid - if the goods are roughly the same condition and quantity as when bought. Guess what: In reality most stores (Apple premium resellers are no exception) won't. And there's not much a consumer can do about it.
A games store in the UK used to have a "10 day any reason returns" policy. Was good for me as if the game was terrible and/or I completed it too quickly I could just take it back.
Now personally I didn't abuse it, I'd often pay more for game at their store due to their fair policy. But some people must have abused it, as its no longer their active policy. They now have a 28 day return, with unbroken seal sticker though (on new and used games).
I don't think people will "rent" anything. I think they're doing it so you could "test drive" an iMac or a TV, if you don't like it, you don't have to keep it.
And anyway, how much of a loss would Best Buy (and Apple) make if they just had the stick it back in a box and back on a shelf?
I test drived a Toshiba Laptop and they said bring it back in 30 days we brought it back after 28 days and they said that we had to bring it back after 27 days and made us buy it HMMMMMM
I've actually bought stuff that broke after awhile found a store that still sold that product bought it again switched the broken one for the good one and returned the broken one to get my money back. Do I feel shame in that hell no if these products had better warranties I wouldn't have to do under handed shit like that!
but what the companies are going to do is try to sell you a protection plan or warranty on that item because " you dont know what somebody did to that product, something could go wrong with it". My guess is that a lot of people will get the extra plans and Best Buy and Apple will actually "make money" by doing this. These companies are not dumb people that consumer is...
Best Buy and Apple will most likely make more money from this, let me explain. So you walk into Best Buy, buy something, then return it later for whatever reason, what Best Buy has to do is sell it as an Open Item. So when the next person coming in the store sees that Open item they want it because its cheaper,
the companies arent dumb. and they know how not to lose money.
if people start abusing this and "renting" electronic devices they will simply raise the prices of all products in a way that everybody will lose (even those who didn't abuse this ofc)
If anything this might be better... Best buy will re-sell products that are in working condition with full warranty and option to purchase extra from Geek Squad but a lesser price... the longer it sits as a "open-Box" item the cheaper it gets! So if people choose to do so, it might end up a cheaper purchase for me later on.
things have been like this in the UK for a long time now. Stores must refund you in full for a product if you dont like it and return it within 7 days. Its actually the law here.
well congrats! This is how we do it in most of Europe and it has never been a problem, in fact it is much better for you as a consumer... maybe you'll have public healthcare too in a not so distant future....
Every major electronics company i know of in scandinavia always give you 30+ days return without any fee.. haven't ever heard of said fee :O strange americans...
in the uk there is no restock charging but the product has to be in a state where it can be resold if there is nothing wrong with the product with tech this usually means in the original packaging :/
This is how it is in several EU countries, and I rarely hear about abuse, but it happens. and it does not stop shops from asking a lot about why, and I really mean a lot.
This is how it is in several EU countries, and I rarely hear about abuse, but it happens. and it does not stop shops from asking a lot about why, and I really mean a lot.
That's not even a rental its better! Its loaning like going to a friends house and trading games if nothing happens to his game you get yours back no hassle, with a rental you don't get the money back even after the return of the goods.
I appreciate the policy change, and I think it'll be good for consumers while it lasts. Spending money on tech that quickly becomes obsolete is anxiety-inducing enough, but even moreso when you have to be concerned with extra fees if you aren't happy with your purchase. People are quick to abuse the system whenever an opportunity presents itself though, and this will be no exception.
Buy it > rent it to someone else for small fee > return it to store = profit made off personal rental. Alongside pirating and black-market goods, the scum bags of society will never need to get a REAL job again...
I'm in South Africa and some stores have a 14 day return policy. Must say that I don't know of anyone that abuses that system. Yes, you can return items even if you don't like it.
The rumor of Best Buy redesigning their stores to offer more Macs & Genius bar combined with no restocking fee @ BB is awesome.. I won't have to drive 35 min away every couple years to see a genius anymore.. It is even better for those that don't have an Apple store within driving range.
The Apple's elimination of the restocking fee is great to be honest with you and now I'm even more encouraged to be buy another Mac and not worried about returning it if I don't like it.
Best Buy always has a notice during the 2 weeks before Superbowl saying that any TV's bought will have a 15% (or more) restocking fee, and they will be continuing this because of how many people do this.
I know for the 2006 Superbowl, people around here tried to do that and found out they had to pay up to 30% in restocking fees on that nice HDTV and back then they weren't cheap like they are today.
The tricky part about this is that while Walmart has historically had the this similar policy, it just puts returned items back on the shelf as new. Best Buy takes 10% off of the item if it was returned and labels it as an "open item." If consumers abuse this it could cause that policy to change.

Thank God they finally got rid of that dumb restocking fee! Why the heck would you want to pay that just to return something??!! I sure hope AT&T does the same thing with their early termination fee!
i dont think its a bad idea. in canada we have that already at bestbuys. its good example i bought a 20 inch Hp monitor i used it for a day and realized a made a mistake and it was more of impulse buy and i couldn't afford it.
It's a law here in sweden that if you buy something online in sweden (any store), you can always return it after 14 days if you're not happy with it. That's why I always buy stuff online :D
The reason a no stocking fee policy works for many stores is that it does two things: A. It improves store credibility, and B. It entices people to buy items based on this premises... However, just as in the way rebates work, many people forget and/or are simply too lazy to actually return a product, or they simply realize that this is a product that they want to keep.
Well.. now when your xbox gets a red ring, you can finally fucking replace it with no hassle, sorry for my swear. But it's about freaking time, sorry again. Damn it!
A few people most of the time make things worse for every body else by trying to take advantage. I my self be it a person or a business try to have other's best interest in mind. But if and only if it doesn't work for you take it back.
thats what i think
Yeah - this I think it's a mixed bag. It helps the consumer who has a legit problem but will ultimately drive up the price of locally purchased electronics. That will in-turn drive incentive to buy online and then the states will all clusterfuck and try to force consumer use taxes on us for all out-of-state online goods.
They realize that they are competing with e-stores like Amazon...it's easier for Amazon to offer "no hassle" return policies because in effect it's a hassle to mail stuff back via snail mail, get confirmation of receipt and wait for a credit. It's easier to return to a brick and mortar store to return an item...and it may not work out in the long run. But, I do hope for the best.
personally i went to bestbuy and claimed a computer was not working so that i could get the one that was on sale for 500 instead of 800 on black friday but i had good reason i had a warrenty with theam i sent theam by broken pc over 5 times before they even insisted on replacing it at one point i did not even make it out of the store and it was broken

A few people most of the time make things worse for every body else by trying to take advantage. I my self be it a person or a business try to have other's best interest in mind. But if and only if it doesn't work for you take it back.

That's how it is in Canada. We never had no restocking fee.

Uh... I never pay a restocking fee, at Best Buy, whenever I return anything...

nothing new , walmart has a 90 days money back policy .
so if everyone else wants to stay in the game they got to catch up!
