my friend when you step back that is called drop steping and you gain more control and better balance yet you gain more forward movement. I think that is great also to goto for practice the thigh but they should be training in a cup and use good fighting understanding. Reson we slap or open hand hit is for not wanting to punch to the face could punch the face and really bad issues. Praying is pulling to your center. I think after the palm strike you sould redirect then have better positioning.
