you know what pisses me off the most about modern martial arts ?
the bullshit sport incline and lack of discipline , back in the day when i was a kid our teachers would beat us with sticks for being slow , now every fucking disabled retard can get a black belt if he goes for long enough .
@sewagedweller I miss being hit for being slow. I totaly agree with you. Last month, a stupid undisciplined 8 years old boy in my dojo went behind my sensei during the training, imitating and mocking him. Sensei did not punish him. He did nothing. I was desiluded. I think most people dont understand karate anymore, and don't respect it.
@ViriatoII the sensei might punish him in the future for that once he is old enough to for a fair kumite the teacher could challenge him with a higher grade, and that boy will fail his grading and will learn his lesson...
Certainly lots of speed and some substance, very accomplished- but where is the omph, the idea of actually blocking and punishing your opponent? It's much closer to accomplished sports than budo Karate. Saying that though, I would love to have her ability!
I agree with spanky and RHBM, there is no KI and also stance is very bad. Being a champion does not necessarily mean being a good karateka. This is only sport not martial art.
Sorry to say: With this bad video resolution, this reminds me a little of keystone cops ore old Laurel&Hardy films. Also the movements could not convince me. Very fast, but not enough Ki.
Maybe watch the Kanazawa vid one (or more) times and then practice according your own condition.
@spankyou42 The performer is Yuki Mimura, from the JKA. She was WUKO, JKA and JKF champ from the late eighties to early nineties. To see her perform live, as she did when she visited us in the Philippines in 1992, is amazing. But then again, beauty of kata is subjective (to each his own). What do you mean by lack of KI? As was taught by my Aikido friend / teacher (sandan), there are two: hard and soft. Karate, he said, mainly uses hard ki. So, what do you mean by that?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So mechanical- all speed and no content. This Kankudai performance didn't have a single punch that would knock down or even hurt a person and not even kime...really is this how shallow things are becoming?
Mimura Sensei is a world class kata competitor, why don't you tell the JKA judges that gave her the championship for three years that her kata is all "mechanical"? That is so typical of keyboard warriors like yourself who just like to criticize others. I'd like to see YOU perform a better kanku dai than her.
@koncept007 I'll tell you! Her performance was bad. Judges, obviously bad also. The JKA? It is a sport and not a martial art. Now how would I know that? JKA life member, trained in Japan, yudansha when there were only 10,000 students in the USA and I learned better. Okinawa has the only real karate in the whole world. All else, except Okinawa linked, is junk and bull shit. Go ahead, rail, piss and moan and delude yourself, you will be the worse for it.
@IEKUKATAKA I always thought bunkai was done in groups or with a partner. Please tell me, how do you perform with "realistic bunkai" if you're performing alone? Is it possible if you could post a video of yourself doing kanku dai with "realistic bunkai" in order to enlighten me and others?
@koncept007 Because you don't know what bunkai is. Bunkai, in Japanese, implies to disassemble or to break down for analysis. Original kata looked like a fight rather than someone performing a karate dance. Knowing a particular bunkai allows one to do the technique as the bunkai dictates. Punching an imagined body is different than punching without it.
@koncept007 However, because it is apparent that you "do karate" rather than study it for historical reality, I doubt that you will understand that concept. The western world and the JKA are lost in a deluded, self imposed world of karate nonsense and you seem to fit right in. Study the art, get involved in karate history and Okinawan karate. You will never know what karate is until you do. Not one person was killed in Okinawa in a damned tournament.
@koncept007 Not one Okinawan ever killed another by choking him with a black belt. When you decide to look for the truth by facing yourself and accepting the reality of karate you will have the answers to lots of questions including what bunkai is and what kata really is. YouTube? Coming right up, get some popcorn and a coke.
@IEKUKATAKA I think you're being too hard on him, it's just my opinion, but he did not say anything injurious and was only speaking politely... Yeah, Martial arts aren't what they used to be, but you shouldn't be angry with people who practice it in this form. Maybe if a truer form existed near, people would choose it and practice it. But there are no senseis like that arround. Regards,
@ViriatoII You have your style, I have mine and it includes plain speech and, at times, being blunt. That has evolved over some 46 years of being involved with karate and seeing the nonsense introduced by the Japanese and the west. In todays world politically correct speech is used as a tool to twist and distort. It is very hard to twist my telling some western idiot he is full of prunes and that is exactly why I do it. Martial arts aren't what they were? You accept that, I don't and won't.
shushyoustupidfool i think you dont truly mean what you write if so you proabobly havent trained karate for so long, if you have at all...if you are serious which i dout if kata is not for bunkai why do you do karate...why not linedance och gymnastics i bet you will meet more chicks that way :-)
This is very good and i dont belive karatekid68 want to do kumite against her she is very fast and has excellent and strong kihon. And i would bet she can show some application from this kata.
I like it. This is my idea of what karate is supposed to be. Katas are meant to look good, not to be practical. I've always thought doing kata for the sake of bunkai is a bit of a joke. Let's face it, kata isn't done for practical application.
This is actually just the opposite of what karate "is supposed to be". Maybe in sports karate the looks are more important, but in traditional karate the looks plays no role whatsoever. In fact, katas performed by brown belts often look "better" than those done by higher dan grades. But sure as hell the masters know their stuff and can apply every movement of any kata in so many unexpected and brutal ways your jaw would drop. I know mine does. And it comes from deep understanding, not good looks
i agree it scares me to know how many ways they can use one simple attack to so many level of destruction and submission and intimadation plus showing a teaching at the same time
