Economically, it makes sense to switch. Less trees being cut down for paper, no giant personal libraries to hold thousands of books. I'm sure his argument about how it's not right for it to be virtual is the same sentiment used by people who were against the printing press. Ditch the bullshit sentimentality and get with the times.
I agree with Mr. Rooney! I don´t have an e-book, but I´m not looking to buy one either. Besides, I don´t think I´m the only one who gets a head ache whenever reading intensly from an electronic display.
ive read thousands of books- i read regular books and read them on my kindle and on the overdrive app for my phone.and for me i gotta tell ya a real book beats the electronic version hands down. i just never get the same experience from the ebook. cant flip thru the pages back n forth- cant bend it to get comfortable if ur in bed. just isnt as good for me. i tried to explain the difference to a few people. a real book u dont have to worry about dropping it. or charging it. imo
I read while on the toilet. If I drop a book in the toilet, I am out $10-15. If I drop a Kindle in the toilet, a spark travels up the toilet and into my ass and fries my brain. Plus I am out $70-100
I think e-readers are like MP3 players. Personally I prefer to listen to music and I would love to have every one of my albums to be on LP but the fact is I don't have the room to store them. I bought my mum an e-reader for christmas and she agrees that they aren't as good as real books but they are a great compromise.
As somebody born in 1985, I somewhat agree with him on this. Yes, there are benefits like portability, having fewer shelves, and saves the trees' lives. However, it's easy to erase data on you computer and suffering power station blackouts, so you'd need books just in case. So, we need both of them and to BALANCE.
However, I also think that authors should increase the QUALITY of the content in each of their books so fewer of them would be produced, thus saving paper and area space.
@unknownunknowns I'm a 20 year old college student who's in his second year o classes, and I LOVE paperback books! I've personally read the Bio Of Adolph Hitler by ian kershaw, the auto bio of Eric Kandel and so on, but Class Textbooks MUST Be ONLINE Damn it! When professor says "MAYBE it's in the book," I want to email him my ebook and say "where damn it! Where!!!???" ;0
i like borders books. its ambient, calm, fun and frankly i dont like that book stores are going out of business due to electronic and downloadable books
Too bad Andy Rooney passed away. Now we have to deal with the people who'd never heard of him before last week, searching for his segments on YouTube to post nasty comments about him.
You'd think that if there's one celebrity that compulsive comment-posting people would praise, it's Andy Rooney: the guy who maintained a long running career making short complaints about different things every week. Talk about envy!
Where can a copy of Andy's first televised essay be found? The one he did for PBS when CBS refused to air it and he therefore quit them. The one entitled An Essay on War.
I am from this generation and the idea of e books just pisses me off! The whole point of buying a book is to add it to your collection, to have a shelf of books, to share with people and to create conversation when people look up at the book shelfs! How can you do that with a fucking e book?? Another point I like to make. What would happen if electricity some how disappeared, or was cut back? This generation would be FUCKED!
@HolyCrispyCrap2 You should always think up of the WORST case scenario, so you'll know what to do if something should occur. If electricity somehow disappeared, then at least we have books. If the library burns into flames, at least we have the Kindle. Thus we need BOTH.
I'll never get an e-book. I have a collection of real books. Lots of great books may go out of print, but it will still be better to have paper produced books so you can easily refer back to a certain page, or even photostat that page. Andy is right. R.I.P.
i'm w/ andy on this. e-books seem really convenient, but what happens when you wanna lend someone a book? it's a type of gadget that just packs in more stuff. that's not advancing technology; that's just organization.
@jesusjuyce but you couldn't lend anything after you bought yer e-book because then you'd have to lend out other invested books in the electronic package. the cycle cuts off of that after investments on the e-book are accounted for. if ya lend out the e-book, it shows how much you would take care of yer things too.
@allabastormaroe you can make the same argument from ipods or mp3 players. You can no longer share music with people by giving your album, or you can't sell your music. But guess what, the ipod was a huge success, last time i saw a CD player or a jukebox was well over a decade ago. It's just long gone.
Organization is one of the best selling points definitely and you seem to downplay it. Why the heck would you want a whole room filled with book when you can have it in your hands.
@keenkennyny cause it's more tangible. for instance, textbooks for resources. if i wanted to find something i could find it by organizing the books instead of going down an actual libraries worth of data that may not be seen if i can't get the power on.
also, if one book gets ruined, not all of them do. that's the same reason i don't carry a wallet. i just find where the data is prudent and place it there (i.e. i put my license in my car and leave it there)
Andy Rooney is just a grumpy old man that hates anything new and gets paid to be a grumpy old man and rant on national television. For one Im am glad he is, because his snide remarks about the changing times and today's youth doesn't deserve to be broadcasted. If you want to do that make a damn youtube or twitter account you grumpy old man.
Im not against e books but if im gona buy a book im gona buy a real book.

@AwaisM unfortunately you can't put e-books on a shelf to show off to the world how well read you are.

@AwaisM I thought wood was a renewable resource and the plastic in an e-reader was bad for the environment.
