@leelee90210 I know somebody answered but i feel like contributing more. The Last Waltz was the band's farewell concert. it was turned into a classic documentary and is a 4 disc album. if you thought neil young and joni were the only two that joined... oh boy you are in for a sweet surprise. highly suggest buying the album or at least watching the movie.
This is I believe one of the greatest songs from that era - I can't believe that a Canadian band could sing a song so well that refers to a time from the American South - maybe they have some connection to it?
I am related to the great Robert E Lee and every time I play this song you can rest assured that it is at full volume. Kick ass song. God love the South!
The song hell love the song that is why i was here in the first place!! oh and by the way i know it has crossed your mind...... I am one of the 5% and I know what goes on behind closed doors of white households i fucking live in one !!!!!!!
@eeldergill Exactly! It's such a powerful song. I've recently gotten into the Civil War and I'm reading about it. The song is so authentic and powerful. It gives me goosebumps. Hard to believe that it was written by someone as detached from the events as a Canadian.
@MrStrongarms The rebels weren't all evil. Many of them were simply fighting for state's rights, trying to prevent the government from having too much power over the people. If you look at all of the corruption in the government today, that's not an evil cause at all.
@MrStrongarms No. There is a very small, radical group that supports terrorism within the Muslim community. Does that mean that anyone who is Muslim is evil? I sure hope you don't think that way. Hell, if you do, then who isn't evil? I know that a number of confederates were racist and supported slavery, which is evil, but not all of them were like that. I like to think that Virgil Caine and his family were just defending their freedom.
@xtremerockninja7 what ever it's your story you can twist the truth all you want and there is not a thing i can do about it I suppose when they were slaughtering all native nations like the cherokee, chippewa, ect. that was for freedom too huh!!
@MrStrongarms No, those were the actions of an oppressive, greedy government, the kind of government that people should rebel against, wouldn't you say? Haha, hey, I don't want to keep arguing via the internet though. I love this song and think the main message to take away from it is that war causes a great deal of pain. "He was just 18, proud and brave, but a Yankee layed him in his grave." A powerful and passionate song, indeed.
@xtremerockninja7 i never said a bad thing about the song i like the song, the history, but if they would of let them write it the way they wanted the line would of said... He was just 18, proud and brave, but a nigger loving Yankee laid him in his grave! Listen I don't want to argue either and i am not saying that you are a racist. What I do know is that I was born here and have grown up, lived worked and will die here..with complete confidemce I can say that better than 95% White are racist
Of all the times I wish I were alive to be somewhere, the first would have been Woodstock in 1969 and second The Last Waltz in 1976. I'd never have to see another concert again, because everything else would just be a disappointment.
This is what the tea party is all about.Don,t sit up there and spend all our money on stupid shit, protect us and get the truck out of the way,no more welfare no more food stamps no more sending money over seas to countrys that want us to die enough is enough!!!!

@rockyracune im pretty sure blacks or any enslaved people arent "happy" maybe "indoctrinated" is a better word. everyone deserves freedom and what they do with it is their choice
@rockyracune i agree its what you do with it that makes freedom count..but these people had no real choice than to flock to inner cities for work and for better living after the end of slavery. If they were not given proper education or employment status its also not their fault. slavery ended but the bigotry continued to the extent that they became an almost sub-human species and herded into ghettos with no oppurtunities or hope for the inhabitants. black people were given freedom but no rights
Probably the Greatest ever live performance of a song ever!!! Dripping with soul, bristling with energy, and played by an awesome collection of musicians, the like of which we will never see again! And Levon gives the song so much of his heart that it hurts. Beautiful!!
@naughtmoses while i agree that grossman was a huge greedy a55hole and played a big part in the whole mess i still say that you just dont do that to friends. grossman also is the reason most ppl think Steve Miller wrote jet airliner and it was actually a song by paul pena.the music business is dirty and grossman loved being in the middle of it, but i'll say it again, you just dont do that to friends.
No jssnmser, it is not well documented that the members all contributed equally to songwriting, unless Helm's bitter rant of an autobiography counts as documentation. I love the band, and I loved Helm before he got all paranoid and started basically blaming Robbie Robertson for everything that every went wrong in his life. But the truth is that Robertson was their primary songwriter.
Robbie didn't write songs, he wrote words. It takes a band to write a song. Robbie even took credit for writing Garth's organ improvisation, The Genetic method. Every member should have gotten credit on every song that they played on, because they made a musical contribution. Up on cripple creek wouldn't be the same without Garth's clavinette. Each member was equally important, but Robbie thought the person who wrote lyrics should get all the money.
complete bs sgairdner. well doc that they wrote equally and robbie just had a good lawyer. where is robbie';s 2 grammys. he has been living in a cave for 20 yrs
Either way, we are all North American. We are the new world (quite unjustly), and our roots are still different to that of the old world. Hard work, expansion, adventure, and landscape are our past.
This song, and band, bring me back to my childhood creek jumping, sling shot shooting at cars, and man hunt days.
mrm..what do you mean? Robbie knows? This was a band of five awesome musicians, all great in their own right. Robbie was only one of the members, he was not the leader. If anyone was it would have been Levon, he was the original member with the others joining his band, Levon and the Hawks. So sad Danko and Manuel are gone, losses to the industry. And, by the way, it is Robertson.
your pretty dumb robbie is from toronto and levon is from ARKENSAW! they were a canadian american band, all members I believe were from ontario except levon. why you cussing, let the man thank the great men, it dont matter wheres hes from AND the song is about the south and levon is southern..so your just dumb... lol
My absolute favorite... People do not know what they're missing these days... They don't know what music or talent is...

Either way, we are all North American. We are the new world (quite unjustly), and our roots are still different to that of the old world. Hard work, expansion, adventure, and landscape are our past.
This song, and band, bring me back to my childhood creek jumping, sling shot shooting at cars, and man hunt days.

Levon Helm Day! I love it.

mrm..what do you mean? Robbie knows? This was a band of five awesome musicians, all great in their own right. Robbie was only one of the members, he was not the leader. If anyone was it would have been Levon, he was the original member with the others joining his band, Levon and the Hawks. So sad Danko and Manuel are gone, losses to the industry. And, by the way, it is Robertson.

I`m well up for Levon day, even though I live in England. You will not find a better vocal from a drummer.

@rubberduckkk I know I'll be excoriated for this, but Don Henley and Phil Collins are better vocalists than Levon Helm.

@rocker53zero No, it's more like comparing cheese with christmas fruitcake. Some people like christmas fruitcake.

@rubberduckkk It's hard to find a better voice from a singer. That's coming from a Yankee.

KevinVancouver2 4 months ago
@KevinVancouver2 To echo Banks1645 and others, Levon Helm is from Arkansas originally, and the single American in the band.
noirdamecom 3 months ago
@marydwyer14119 He's Canadian. And that's coming from an Alabamian.
MarkuzLS1 3 months ago
@MarkuzLS1 Actually Levon Helm is Arkansas, and that's coming from someone who actually knows what they are talking about.
