I had to look this up, but a gauntlet is in fact a glove. Specifically it's either a medieval chain mail type glove, one with an extended wrist cuff, or just the wrist cuff of the glove itself. So you're either throwing chain mail gloves, long gloves, or glove cuffs at each other.
