Everybody is so busy arguing about EVH and Hendrix that they're ignoring that Johnny Winter is also here playing his butt off! Johnny kicks as much ass at back-up as he does at soloing. Have you ever noticed that whatever Johnny does makes the whole band sound better? Think about it...
this is amazing. and there is no comparing eddie van halen to this. i love me some eddie, but come on now people! ps eddie is now a toothless meth head. SAD
Jimi was a blues guitarist period he threw in controled feed back and had a good stage act. I like hendrix just as much as the next guy. But theres a huge differnce of what is your own opinion and what are facts. The facts are eddie vh would smoke hendrix
@EPI6fingers That's a big statement you're making, like saying that Kobe Bryant is better them Michael Jordan or Michael Jordan is better then Julius Erving! I doub't that Eddy Would say that he's better then Jimi was, just out of respect. The new always draws from the old. If it were not for Jimi, we'd never have listened to Eddy.
Jimi Hendrix could out-solo Eddie Van Halen any day of the week. Listen to Jimi's live jams. His tone was better, he was more melodic, he was more fluid, more creative, and he could sing and match his voice and his soul with the guitar at the same time. As far as EVH, he is good at what he does, which is achieving speed with finger tapping and dives with the whammy bar, etc. and yes, he does do it with feeling, but he pales in comparison with Hendrix, IMHO.
Ruelsmith i suggest you do research on eddie van halen befor you open your mouth it will stop you from looking like a total douche. Im a professional guitarist and trust me hendrix isnt even a pimple on eddie Vh's ass!
Jimi had way more in his bag than the EVH dude.Jimi spoke way more volumes of expression with out the tapping, Eddie`s main thing.EVH was great but not the same as Jimi not even close.
@weaselpopper Like I said, Jimi INVENTED many of the techniques later used and taken for granted by other guitarists, like EVH, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, SRV, Ted Nugent...the list goes on and on. On June 18th, 1967, guitar changed forever when Jimi Hendrix took the stage at the Monterey Pop Festival. It was that life changing, and not just for one group, but the entire guitar playing public. THAT is greatness...
Eddie van halens style of playing go's unmatched by any guitarist past or present. Hes a master luthier and inventor. Jimi hendrix was great for his time. Eddie van halen is for all and beyond time.
@EPI6fingers Dude, EVH never had other guitarists crapping their drawers like Hendrix did the first time they heard him. Many guitar players including Townsend, Clapton, Beck, Frampton, West and others all thought they needed to find something else to do because their careers were over, or so they thought. EVH never had that much of an effect on major guitar players. Blab on all you want, but every guitar list ever has Jimi as numero uno.
Eddie van halen is a master guitarist. He plays hard rock/metal/Blues/Jazz/classical and swing guitar. He plays it all hendrix most certainly did not. If it wasnt for eddie van halen only god knows what we guitarist would sound and play like today notgood
It was eddie van halen 35 years ago that completely changed and reinvented the electric guitar and its players. The way we play the way it sounds and the whole concept of electric guitar. And theres no one since eddie Vh thats done more for and on guitar!
Ruetsmith eddie vh most certainly is more important. And by the way it looks you dont know jack fucking shit about lord edward so maybe you should just keep your mouth shut. Hendrix is not was not and never will be better than edward van halen period!
@EPI6fingers You just show how shallow your mind is and how you have no clue. Eddie Van Halen was a great guitarist in his own right. He's one of the greatest, without a doubt. However, better than Hendrix? Come on... When Eddie began, and mostly though his years with Roth, his style was somewhat simplistic with his lightning fast lead and tapping thrown in. Later, after he mostly abandoned that style under Hagar, his guitar playing improved, overall, immensely.
@tb0432 Exactly. When Hendrix was still alive, Johnny was considered by most to be the equal of Hendrix. That's saying something! Two of my favorite legends playing together. Can it get any better?
@Marcus70815 This was recorded in a studio(The Record Plant). So the question's premise is flawed to start with.So just because their was no video it shouldn't be on YouTube? Ever heard of Robert Johnson? Better get his stuff off of YT as well I guess? The point is this is reaching a bunch of people that have never heard it before. JW thought it was a nice thing and who am I to argue? Have you ever played with Hendrix? There are many thousands of postings on YouTube with no video.
Dude bull fucking shit Edward van halen smokes Hendrix if you want reality. Hendrix wasn't even close to the guitarist like Edward van halen. You should have kept your mouth shut.
@EPI6fingers Actually, in the early days, EVH was very simplistic with his bag of tricks thrown in there. If it weren't for Hendrix, there would be no EVH, so as they say. The dive bomb? Hendrix's baby. Playing by tapping (though different) was something Hendrix did a lof of, and even chording. Players like EVH take for granted the things that Hendrix invented on the guitar. The minute Hendrix walked of the stage at Monterey, guitar would never be the same again.
Every major guitar player during Hendrix's days alive payed him homage. They all wanted to check him out. It's been said by those very guitarists that they thought they'd have to start to do something else to make a living, after seeing Hendrix play just one time. Hendrix isn't an orthodox guitar player. His technique is lacking in some areas. But what poured out of his guitar was nothing but magic. Even when he hit a note out of key, it seemed like it was just perfectly placed.
@anonymouslolxD Not saying he "tapped" like Eddie. Tapping is nothing more than the use of hammer-ons and pull-offs, which Hendrix used a lot of , even chording with hammer-ons. Eddie's tapping style is undoubtedly his own. It just blends other techniques together that have been used before.
I would of loved to here Edward van halen and jimi Hendrix playing together and believe me if Hendrix was alive that most certainly would have happened
Guitar player international some years ago placed Edward van halen And jimi Hendrix the two most important and influential guitarist of all-time. That's not even arguable that's for shure!
@EPI6fingers EVH is NOT in the same category as Hendrix. Thats like saying the best two drinks of all time are Jack Daniels whiskey and Zima wine coolers
@EPI6fingers Well, it is arguable. I mean, EVH more important than Charley Christian? Wes Montgomery? T-Bone Walker? You can't be serious. Yes, EVH deserves his rightful place high among most other guitarists, but there are still a few that have had a greater overall impact on the world of guitar than he has, for sure. Jeff Beck, Clapton, Paige... I mean, come on...
When I listen to this recording I see how humble were Jimi and Johnny... how they respect each other in solos... nowadays guitarists will end up making sport in a guitar duel... not music.
bon scott and hendrix died the same way. Not elevated when in a state of puke. SO both suffocated when laying horizontal. If only it was not the case, and both were given at leas another 10 years of life ! Sorry........I'm glad Steven still can see the light !
@mothergrace1 Where did you read that? .. I know I've read him saying this about Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath from Chicago .. Never heard the quote about Stills.. ever.. and I'm a gigantic Hendrix fan. Not to be a music snob but Still's guitar work ins't really in the same league as Hendrix or Winter is he?
this is the best time where 3 great came togather ,during that time many great one jam togather this is one of the reason that i like the good old day
Jimi is definitely on guitar here. He is noodling at 2;07 then he finally opens up a bit about 2;48 and by 3:08 you know this is Jimi.Johnny Winter starts playing slide at 3:45. Then Hendrix is playing again at 5:50 again to the end. Maybe it is Stills on Bass?
Man, you made my day! Just surfing you tube and found this. Shows how versatile (and ridiculously talented) Hendrix was. I'd sell a kidney to see this lineup is concert today! Thanks from an old (51) white guy who still loves good music.

IT took Youtube to bring out everyuthing i always wondered about :)> I never imagined i would EVER EVER see Band of Gypsys in NYC man we loved that album man. And imagine I now have the MP3 of MACHINE GUN :D
Just search Google Images for "Johnny Winter Jimi Hendrix" for pictures (I take no responsibility if there are ads or nasties on the found sites. I think jams were rather frequent at the Pauls scene. Johnny's manager brought him New York to get him started in the big time scene. Some pics show Jimi on bass, Johnny on a Strat, some other guy with a fancy Gibson or something. Cool stuff
I agree it's Hendrix and Winter on guitars. Winters is easy to spot but that ain't Stills playing the other one and there are classic Jimi riffs close to the end. Prolly Stills on bass - STILLS is an awesome bass player - he did all the bass on the early CSN stuff - check out Wooden Ships, Suite Judy Blue Eyes and much more.
Holy Shyte, I never heard about these three guitar titans doing any kind of jam session together. Jimi H's roots were always in the BLUES, as this recording so well illustrates. Stephen Stills and Johnny Winter are two great artists and personal favorites of mine, as well.
I agree on the Stills assumption on lead. Johnny on slide makes sense too. I guess that leaves Jimi on bass. God knows whose on drums, could be Dallas Taylor as suggested. Maybe Jimi on drums :-{0)
I agree it's Johnny Winter on slide but I'd say it's Stills on the other guitar. I reckon Jimi might be on bass and it sounds like Dallas Taylor on drums. For my money no way is that Jimi playing lead - just doesn't sound like him, it lacks his fluency and his amazing chordal work.
Love hearing Johnny Winter's slide comingled with Jimi Hendrix's smooth voice and the guitars of all three master craftsman. 'Twas some era. Please check out our site on youtube for tributes to Jimi, Johnny, Brother Duane and Mike Bloomfield. Regards, love and peace--- johnnyguitar335
an edited version of this was issued on the Lifelines box set around 1990 which is no longer available. This longer version needs an official release. Can't understand why it hasnt happened yet. This is brilliant!
This has to be one of my top 5! I didn't know they jammed together. I personally visited Jimi Hendrix's memorial site this past weekend in Renton,WA. (August -last weekend 2010). Very moving and emotional. You can't believe how many lipstick kisses there are on his face-image (granite -marble). Many flowers left too. Jimi lives on in my spirit. and his music!!
Theres a picture on the johnny winter website (under pictures and "with friends") of Johnny, Jimmy and someone that looks like Stills, Johnny has his Firebird, Stills is on a Les Paul Custom (P90s) and Hendrix was actually playing bass, this guitar playing does not really sound like Hendrix but he's definitely singing, I bet he played the bass
This was recorded at the Record Plant in May of '69. Jimi is playing lead guitar, Johnny is playing slide guitar. I don't know if Stills is on this or not, but it's definitely Hendrix and Winter on the guitars.

have the cd...Stills-Guitar, Jimi-Bass, John Sebastian-Guitar, Buddy Miles-Drums. The cd says it's "Live and Let Live" but it's actually "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" If you download 'LimeWire' you will find it...i have it on there it's 14:12 long.
@mikejess3333 This was recorded May 7th 1969 at The Record Plant, NYC, after a night of jamming at he Scene Club. Stephen Stills on bass, Buddy Miles on drums.
great stuff. I had no idea that these three great musicians ever hooked up to jam. I particularly love the slide guitar from Johnny Winter. THANKS for posting.

Johnny's slide is instantly reconizeable Jimi sounds like he's playing an sg or Les Paul .Excellent jam!!!

an edited version of this was issued on the Lifelines box set around 1990 which is no longer available.

Stills and Hendrix were personal friends. Hendrix nearly hired Stills away from CSN.
Their agent intercepted the offer. Stills never saw it, or he left to play with Hendrix.

Johny sounded much better when he played the firebird - rythm pickup

Hendrix learned a lot from Guitar Slim. Here he pays his dues to him.
