Did anyone notice that when Makoto finally exhausted her last leap to help Chiaki, she actually landed back at the same time and spot when she first hit the 'chestnut' and fell under the pile of book accidentally? Is it possible that she had unknowingly regained the ability to leap, which Chiaki later realized and whispered into her ears?

Me too. I really felt sad at the ending, but I think the screenwriter deliberately wrote that ending to drive home the point that "time waits for no one." No matter how many times Makoto time travelled, she could never bring back that one moment when Chiaki asked her to a date.

I agree. This is one of the best movies I've ever watched. I stil feel for Chiaki and Makoto...this song fits the movie; I can see the scenes unfold in my head when I hear this, and I can feel the pain of the separation. It's great to know that there are many who share my sentiments... :D
