Where's the contradiction? Yes, here the belt is on the line and I confirm Nino was in good shape, as sharp as he could be at that point in his career. I agree he was just overmatched against a top 3 ATG middleweight. I wasn't making excuses for him. My point is Benvenuti didn't have the same motivations for all his late bouts: for instance, he lost badly to mediocre Bethea in a meaningless non-title fight and then KO him easily in a rematch. You can clearly see the difference
Calm down, man. You're not Benvenuti's brother, I guess, so stop acting like you know him better than me. Lack of motivation has NOTHING to do with heart, but a lot to do with getting in shape and being focused for a fight: late in their career, even great fighters struggle to find that "fire" everytime. I've never questioned Nino's heart and I know he was past his prime here. But you don't go 12 rounds with a peak Monzon if you're shot or in bad shape
Nino lost his hunger after his trilogy with Griffith, had some off nights in non-title bouts he barely trained for, but was still sharp when the belt was on the line.

I've heard alot of Monzon, of course, but this is the first time I've seen him box, even in a short clip. I'll watch more of him and this fight in particular, it was Ring Fight of 1970. He certainly looks rough, and that right that ended it was perfectly delivered. I don't know what the little prat that entered the ring while the ref was counting Nino out was doing, unless it was to get his autograph.
Yeah, I can't believe that idiot really tried to stop the count and save Nino from the KO loss. But when an italian boxer fights in his homeland, anything could happen

We must understand the psychology of boxing and what makes Monzon so difficult to comprehend is his nature. where as most people will threat, menace, bully and then lie down, Monzon was kind to most fighters before destroying them in cold blood. Watch him back off on Griffin and Valdez when they slipped in the corner than touch gloves. Look at the amazing photo of him and bennie briscoe at the weighin for some insight into Carlos. Carlos Monzon is my favorite middleweight of all-time. He was so smart and subtle...It was like it was programmed in his head that he was going to beat everybody. Nino was great too!!!
btw, Monzon and Nino have similar body times and are both handsome. I'm not a homo, but there was a certain rock-star appeal to a guy like Monzon...
Someone needs to get Kelly Pavlik video of Carlos Monzon to show him exactly HOW to get the MAXIMUM from the gifts that God gave him as a fighter. Not that Pavlik could ever be the fighter that Monzon was but he could atleast learn much in that they shared the same "advantages" over their opponents.
Ehm, my spanish is almost non-existent, so I don't know if you are criticizing me or other users. I consider Monzon the greatest middleweight of all time. Benvenuti did all he could do against a better champion and has nothing to be ashamed for.
No, Benvenuti and Holyfield were great fighters who have forgotten more about boxing than you, RocioLokita, can hope to learn in a lifetime. Clinches are part of the game, Monzon himself used them a lot against fighters who went to his body. You really don't have a clue about boxing. Stick to videogames
One of the best knockouts in boxing history, as well as one of the better fights in Middleweight history. Monzon was probably the greatest Middleweight champion of all time. Still, you have to give Benvenuti credit for even getting up from that right, few Middleweights would. It takes a lot of heart to get up from that kind of punch.
uhmm...What about them? Can you be a bit more specific?
If you're referring to what I said about Benvenuti having the heart to get up from that shot... note that I said "few" Middleweights gets up from that shot, not that "no" Middleweights get up from it...
he was at the very end of his career, 90 matches, and he fought the best middleweight
of all time. Nino proved to be a great and consistent top level fighter for many years, much better than many "famous" fighters of the 80s, 90s and today, with big promotion and business behind.
Are you a real boxing fan? Nino Benvenuti was an olympic gold metal as an amateur, then he turned pro and conquered the light middleweght world title and the middleweight title, TWICE. He beat great fighters like Sandro Mazzinghi (2), Emile Griffith (2), Luis Manuel Rodriguez (you don't know'em, right?). This fight with Monzon, a top 3 middleweight of all time, came at the end of his career and even though he was soundly beaten, Nino showed glimpses of his fine boxing skills.

RocioLokita 2 years ago
No, Benvenuti and Holyfield were great fighters who have forgotten more about boxing than you, RocioLokita, can hope to learn in a lifetime. Clinches are part of the game, Monzon himself used them a lot against fighters who went to his body. You really don't have a clue about boxing. Stick to videogames

Saying you don't know anything about this sport is not an insult...

One of the best knockouts in boxing history, as well as one of the better fights in Middleweight history. Monzon was probably the greatest Middleweight champion of all time. Still, you have to give Benvenuti credit for even getting up from that right, few Middleweights would. It takes a lot of heart to get up from that kind of punch.

uhmm what about Tony Zale and Bennie Briscoe?
DJQueens89 2 years ago
uhmm...What about them? Can you be a bit more specific?
If you're referring to what I said about Benvenuti having the heart to get up from that shot... note that I said "few" Middleweights gets up from that shot, not that "no" Middleweights get up from it...

Onore a Carlos e Nino, Grandi Campioni:

he was at the very end of his career, 90 matches, and he fought the best middleweight
of all time.
