I had an unexpected quick errand to run this morning, and had to do it without my morning coffee..I wanted to get home as quick as possible for that coffee..well, as I was pulling into my driveway, this came on the radio...let's just say not too many songs will keep me from my morning coffee. But..this one DID! Excellent tune.
These guys are so awesome! Still touring and still sound great! Saw them just this spring opening for the Molly Hatchett wannabees, and they blew them away. Their music sounds great without all the computer filtering that so-called musicians of today rely on.
They played this live at The Three Tuns, Gateshead, UK Thursday 7/7/11......proper band, playing proper music and totally kicked ass........fulfilled one of my 100 things to do before I die....Totally Awesome
My favorite song ever recorded. And I concurr, that whoever voted this down KNOWS NOTHING, including Mr. SuperTranced,...asshole you don't know what quality is.
While I have to admit this was 1 of my top 10 most favorite songs while I was a teenager(still love it), I also think Henry Paul,Molly & Skynard,Outlaws & Marshall Tucker were all awesome. I happen to think Grey Ghost is my #1, maybe Simple Man or Dreams, maybe Tuesdays Gone. GD, you just can't pick any 1 southern rock song to be the best. I tip my glass to a lost generation that made some of the most IMPORTANT music (our generation) has ever produced. I'm just hoping that it wont be forgotten.
every once in a while they would come down out of the mountains here in nc?? and play in charlotte, nc. as far as i could tell, all the original members performed and they kicked ass. they had an old primer painted, beat up "mini" school bus to carry their equipment. i saw them play live at amosis-sp? lol, amosis is owned by some idian dude(from india) and is well known around here for booking these great old RR bands. i'm ex. navy too, an "OS" stationed in charleston, sc (1986).
Thanks for posting the song. Our band opened for Blackfoot when this song came out. The whole show is now a blur in my mind!!! LOL Also opened for Henry Paul and Johnny VanZant. These guys were the core of Southern Rock, as well as 38 Special, etc. Great memories.
ThatVeteran,,,first thing is if your a true veteran,I thank you for your service!! second, god bless that you took the time to learn one of the all time greatest songs ever! I`m old schoool and good old southern rock and roll !!! First time seeing live was at Portsmouth Stadium.Molly Hatchett,Blackfoot,Delbert Mclinton, and Missouri,so freakin SWEEEEEEEEEET!
@djbosox as far as my Veteran status I started out working in the engine room on board the USS Independence CV62 as a Machinist Mate, during my first deployment during the Iranian hostage crisis back in 1979 I just had an old Acoustic Guitar a few spare strings and plenty of time on my hands. I was also blessed that I knew a few guys who could already play to show me what I was doing right or wrong. by the time I bought my first electric Guitar and a used amplifier I could already play it.
Great stuff right here! my band was lucky enough to open for Ricky & Blackfoot back in the day. Awesome band, and great guys. Ricky is truly a gem, and I am glad for his continued success!
i was blessed to see them in Vegas at some outta the way casino, in 2000 , before thunderfoot died... ther sho was incredible...i will always remember the band by "diary of a workin man"
I've always associated this song with my dad. I remember the many nights he'd play that as we shared a gyro and a Pepsi that we got from Zorba's. Still brings a smile to my face, those were the good times. Great song.
I was fortunate to be backstage with them in 81 at Sandy Creek Alabama. Took lotsof pictures, some of which are on my website at wwwdotfreeflightbanddotcom
i don't care who you are or how much guitar experience you have ,just start laying down the licks at 4:24, its more beautifully pure than Free-bird my friends.
it took me three months of practice to do it justice, I cant count the strings I've broken ..I don't know what they call Music these days, but its not as pure as this riff.
Most of today's acts are just performance artists, not real musicians . this music wasn't washed through a computer to just sound good.
@thatVeteran BlackFoot Stikes is one of my Favorite Albums!!Ricky Medlock lead singer & Guitarts..Was skynards Drummer when they were a garge band..He`s been With Skynard for the LAST 20 years as Lead guituist, Backing Voculs,,How I Wish They`d play a Blackfoot tune!!
@thatVeteran Exactly! THIS song, my friends, owns any song Skynard ever done. And i like LS. Everything about this song is great, like a roller-coaster ride, when it picks up, and the solo kicks in.....it's what song structure is all about. I just cant get enough of the nice long guitar solo too.
@thatVeteran dude, right now i have a guitar in my hands, ive had one there since i was a child, im now 23 and ive been playing everyday since, i still cant do this justice, rickey medlocke is a genius. this is pure raw talent, in his vocals and guitar and just about nothing compares to it
@thatVeteran yea,,this is the first real guitar playing tune I learned,, I had smoke on the water,, Iron man and those easyones down OK,, but this was a little more advanced than those straight up bar cord tunes,, i played highway song over and over,, because I liked the way my fingers looked floating over the strings, and after a while it began to be music, smooth and deliberate, yet in a begginners reach... Its such agreat tune in many ways
@thatVeteran My friend, while I might agree with the last two statements, I must say without Free Bird, this song would not exist. You can hear many parts of that solo in this one. Both of them are fucking win, though! :D
I agree i dream of listening to this song while going 100 in my 67 chevelle when i get it done. Its got a ways to go but it will get there if im still alive to finish it.
i saw these guys at a club, amasis?? sp? in charlotte, nc(1996). the guy that owns the club is indian, from the country India, i think.... anyway. ya know, to see people gather from all around charlotte, any culture or race and have a goog time is worth watching. there were allways people in the crowd that handled crowd control. no need to call the cops. they had one of those old mini school bus's to carry their equipment, it looked ragid. thats cool as hell.
@BigBossInc I guess the drugs these days must have ruined your ears . Maybe you don't realize that system of a down use computerize synthesizers to wash their music before it goes out through the speakers. Blackfoot never even tried to fool their fans like that. lots of "performance artists these days do this. many fans these day also play guitar hero and couldn't play even a simple song on a "real guitar" its basically like today's Musicians today they go through the motions.
@thatVeteran Oh I get it, anyone who doesn't have the same opinion as you is automatically wrong. Well guess what, I'm an American, and in America we have this thing called FREE SPEECH, something that you as a Veteran should be well aware of. Trying to snuff me because of my right makes you no better than those Communist Nazi fucks that try to oppress this great nation on a daily basis. I think Blackfoot falls short and if you don't like it, then you can go straight to China! God Bless America!
@BigBossInc OK you do have every right to disagree with me that is true. However I am a "combat wounded Veteran" so I shed blood to insure that right is and was secured for all Americans.
My statement still stands..I happen to just like this song..and I can play it..been paid to play it..I just wish I could do the vocals while I was playing it. have you ever tried to play it?Its a real hand full..so please don't lecture me
about Freedom,I risked my life more than once/seen friends die .
I saw Blackfoot at the Orpheum in Boston around 1982 ,they were backed up by an unknown rock/metal band from the UK....DEF LEOPARD !!! This song is better than Freebird, I agree STONY
One of the best ever ! Ricky Medlocke's vocals are superb and the guitar work brilliant, i love Freebird but this is a better track in my opinion, more melodic.
I've lost count of how many times I've played this. It's not loosing it's hold. I'm stoner from way back. This song brings back so many memories. Awesome song, awesome band. They just don't make music like they used to. I don't know how people can stand the new stuff. I know I'm probably old and stuck in my music. But damn listen to this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome!
One of the top 50 southern rock songs--and i dont really like southern rock--Great song I have been to their recording studio in Weddington NC----Great Band
Little shit's need to recognize, when it comes to Southern Rock, it's the Allman Brothers Band, Skynard, Marshall Tucker Band, Blackfoot,& Molly Hatchet . I defitately left some folks out of that list but it covers the originator and sustainers of Southern Rock.
i couldn't have said it better. He just starts getting into it showing his potential during the last few seconds of the song. I've never seen them live. I wonder if he ever prolonged the solo during a concert and really showed everyone what he could do.
To me that is the greatest guitar solo as far as recorded songs go. Why does the song fade out at the best part of the solo, which is the very end where the guitarist is simply picking really fast? I think its a better solo than the guitar solo in "free bird", and that solo is awesome itself.
As a kid, I used to go to my neighbor's garage where his band would cover this song. I thought it was their song for some time. I remember being in awe. This song brings back lots of memories.

Awesome!

I wonder if he ever prolonged the solo during a concert and really showed everyone what he could do.

the solo should have been longer...he was just really getting into it

To me that is the greatest guitar solo as far as recorded songs go. Why does the song fade out at the best part of the solo, which is the very end where the guitarist is simply picking really fast? I think its a better solo than the guitar solo in "free bird", and that solo is awesome itself.

As a kid, I used to go to my neighbor's garage where his band would cover this song. I thought it was their song for some time. I remember being in awe. This song brings back lots of memories.
