Cool! At 9:40 Hickok is shooting at a can on a rod and the ricochet hits the red target to the left also. I don't thing he meant to do that...or did he?
if you haven't bought one yet hikok the milspec springer has white sights and i find that really the only differences between the mil and RO is asthetics trigger feels the same, but is parkerized. and it doesnt have the beavertail safety. and the thumb safety but i have shot a RO and i just bought a mil and really i like it just as well. if you have any issues with those few asthetic differences you can always update to the wilson combat parts.
Picked up the the Loaded model today. Happy camper here! And the store had some 8 rd Mec-Gar mags for a bargain. Life IS good! Support you local gun shop.
I am in looking to purchase a 1911, i have about 1,000 to spend, there are sooo many 1911s to choose from, I was looking at the Colt railguns or the Colt gold cup trophy. What do you recommend? Thanks!!!
rented the Springfield R.O. today. First time shooting a 1911--I'm hooked!!!!!! Holy Moses, I was laying down tighter groups than my SR9. I love the feel, features, and fit... and the loud bang is cool too. I agree with you Hickok, the front sight made it harder to sight on black. My next purchase will definitely be a 1911. either a R.O. or SR1911 still a toss-up.
what kinda mags are you useing?? springfield says there a 7 round mag and i notice your shooting 8 with out one in the pipe and your mag isnt extended, im looking for a nice 1911 but i would prefer 8+1 i know its one round but its just me
@sjhowerton88 If I can offer an opinion, I've shot both, both are fantastic pistols for the money. It will come down to your preference. Try to rent both if you can, shoot both if you can, and decide upon which you like. Finish, fixed vs. adjustable rear sight, etc. It's all preference. Both companies have outstanding customer service.
@timcrane88 Thanks for the reply! I would try both out if given the opportunity but there are only 2 ranges that rent firearms where I am from, and both ranges don't have a Ruger or Range officer. I like the look of the Ruger better and have read nothing but good reviews about so I am going to be patient and wait for one. I am currently on 7 different waiting lists for that Ruger.
I was just wondering. Have you ever had a problem shooting steel? I was thinking of getting a couple, but some of my friends were saying it is not very safe.
I learned that after a day of shooting you always clean the barrel, and wipe down the gun with oils etc. But I just got my 1911 the other day, and was wondering on when to strip it down and clean the essentials?
Hickok, did you send this one back? I saw that you sent a check rather than return the Ruger SR1911 and these are about the same price... is the Ruger that much better than this one?
@XxxxExclusivexxxX These kinds of hanging targets move when they are hit, which deflects most of the shattered bullet downard (by design). It's cupped/fixed steel targets which you need to worry about ricochet on more.
@TheEllampalli Generally speaking a 1911 is not a good gun for a first time gun owner. A first timer needs practice & .45 costs a lot more than 9mm or .40;new 1911's need to be broken in & you have to know how to handle jams;proper gun handling techniques are essential with a 1911;take down & cleaning is more involved;the sequence when drawing from a holster is very specific;a 1911 for home defense takes a little more care & de-cocking it when all is clear means a trigger pull
@TheEllampalli That said, all of that can be very easily learned, but it takes time, money and dedication to the gun lifestyle. If you are planning to shoot a 100 rounds at the range once every couple of months, self teach yourself to shoot, look up a gun cleaning video on the internet and keep it in your nightstand until one night you hear a noise... I'd say you should probably get something else.
@TheEllampalli A G19 solves all the issues mentioned below with the exception of the trigger pull to decock. In my opinion probably your BEST choice for a first gun because of it's simplicity and huge following. Just as an FYI, get a Gen 4 it has more options for comfort. When I shoot 200-300 in a day (I have a Gen 3) I get a little 'bite' from the trigger safety & when I adjust, my middle knuckle rubs on the bottom of the trigger guard. The Gen4's smaller girth solves this problem. Good Luck!
@TheEllampalli I should probably be banned from the 1911 club for posting all this on a 1911 video, but... when you go to the gun shop, check out an XD9. It is similar to the Glock, but it has an extra safety & it is probably the most comfortable gun I've ever had in my hand. If you live in Kali & can't get a Gen4, it may be a better choice. The G19 is smaller if you want to conceal it &has a lower bore axis, but the XD just makes shooting pleasant. Rent them first, most ranges will have both.
What 1911 would you prefer or recommend out of a Ruger,Springfield or Taurus? its going to be my first pistol and i cant decide im leaning more toward the Ruger Sr1911 but i cant find it anywhere around here all the academy stores are out if i cant get that i was thinking maybe the Springfield Loaded.
Are you right handed, but left eye dominant? Seems like you're resting your cheek on your arm/shoulder, and aiming with your left eye but holding with your right hand.
@hickok45 im buying that pistol from my local gun shop its 799.99 . after watching the video i cant wait to get it ... thanks for a great video ... PS: how far is the big gong from where you were shooting ? thanks chris
You can tell the good folks at Springfield, that based on your review, I purchased a 1911 Range Officer recently. Its shoots as well for me as it did for you and I couldn't be happier. It was not a strech to go to Springfield as I already have a xd9 but the Range Officer is super sweet and always gets "owwws and ahhhs" at the range. Thanks for the review............I trust your opinion.!
@jerrypal01 I work at a local gunshop and we can not even keep them in stock. As soon as we get them in stock they sell within a few weeks, just like the Ruger SR1911.
I purchased a RO about a year ago now and absolutely love it. I am changing out to fiber optic sights as I too agree with you on the condition of the sights. Thanks for the review that reconfirmed I made the right purchase near 2500 rounds later!
Hey Hickok, I'm having a difficult time deciding between the Range Officer and the new SR1911. What made you choose the Ruger over the Springfield? Is it mainly because it's Ruger's first? Or is it truly a better gun? Thanks for your help.
Shot a Springfield Armory "Loaded" 1911-A1. Want to buy one. No - I MUST buy one! Love these guns, Springfield doesn't f---- around with these pistols.
@tdcrane101 I recently picked up the "loaded" and it is awsome to shoot. I was thinking about getting the "RO" but glad i got the "loaded" the trijicon sights make a world of difference and easy to aim in low light or no light.
Shot one recently...finally. Feels remarkably similar to a Parkerized Loaded model except has a beter trigger and those classic adjustable sights. Its definately worth the money
WOW, i think i like this Springfield range officer, very nice specially when you are the one holding on it. lols., maybe thats is better than my 2 months old armscor 1911 FS PS A2 / 45. :)
Nice video...I am ready to buy another government model and I think this one is gonna be it...thx for the heads up on the front sight too...happy shooting!
I once had a Springer Trophy Match and really regret selling it. I wonder how closely the Range Officer performs for almost half the cost. Like the target sights and the overall look but question that you can have a "competition ready" 1911 for under $1,000
@lEgaLiZeVOLVE I had a TRP, which is the same as your trophy match except for night sights, grips, and finish (all bead blast) and sold it like you... regretted it like you. I just bought a RO last week and will tell you I am happy again. It is just as tight and the trigger is one of the best out of box of any production 1911 I've felt. The bushing to slide fit was very tight at first but I worked it smooth while disassembled. The bushing to barred fit is also good and it locks up tight.
@MrVenomsk8ter It DOES look like North Dakota, but when Hickok does winter videos you can still see the range rather than a snow hill, so ND it is not. Also, just bought a Range Officer myself. Like it so far.
@Fisterbear also i have one more question is a remington 700 a good hunting weapon because i eather get a marlin 336 or a remington 700 what do u think?
@hickok45, Thank you for uploading this video. I recently purchased a Springfield 1911 Champion GI. Its awesome and very reliable. I only use FMJ round nose ammo for it but I'd like to use hollow point ammo but I don't want my feed ramp to get damaged. Any advise?
I Own a one of these Range Officers. First ever 1911 I have ever owned, I am very happy with it. I use this as my CCW and will be pickin up Harrison Precision sights for it soon. I like you Hickok45 need that 3 dot. Awesome Post!
@Waboom1, I'll be nice since you're obviously new to guns. It IS wise to avoid being a smart alec when the comment is going to reveal mountains of ignorance. :-)
@Waboom1 The bricks that the metaphorical brick shit house was made out of were actually 1911s. That's why they're so solid, and that's why they're so heavy. You'd be more likely to damage the table setting it down than the gun itself.
@Waboom1 All he did was set it down..... its not a electronic device, or anything like that.... its a fine, fine piece of metal hardware.... Great video. thanks for review. Thumbs up once again!!!
@BobbyJoeHarris Yeah, I ended up buying the MC operator springfield 1911 (just posted my review for it). Love the gun. A few hundred more expensive than the RO but it's worth it to me.
The only thing I don't like about this 1911 is the rear sites but then again I want a 1911 for a nightstand or carry gun so I don't need these kind of site. I'd rather have the night sites like the ones that come on the springfiel operator.
I really want one of these yet i have found them almost impossible to find. No stores cary this model and every store online is sold out. could someone please send me a link of where i could buy one brand new?
Nice gun. I bought a Metro Arms 'America Classic II' M1911. It has all these features and it's made in the Philipines too. It has ALL the 'goodies' that this pistol has but for $420.00! GREAT & Reliable gun, Take care & Stay safe!
You can't say Rock Island and Springfield in the same sentence. Rock Island takes short cuts, Springfield doesn't.
I bought my brother an RO for xmas. The fit and finish was immaculate. The first thing I did was field strip and clean it, the machining was impeccable.
We fired close to 500 rounds the first weekend, no failures or stoppages yet. It will hold 1 inch at 25 yards if you do your part. I've owned 5 Springfield 1911's, all of them shot well under 2". Long live SA!
Hey there Hickok45, another great video!!...Just throwinging out a suggestion for the sights...I myself don't like the "black on black" sights. So when im using someones elses gun or whatnot i use fingernail polish..Comes off pretty easy and not permanant like as say a paint or whatever.(you may have already tried this, again just throwing it out there)..Keep blasting away, love your vids!!!
@TheHogger129 Hey Hogger, Thanks for the comments AND for taking my statements as tongue in cheek. It WAS suppose to be a little racy and funny. NOT all serious and Out of control. I appreciate the input on the method of steel manufacturing (which I was not aware of! Thanks). The Smith just "feels" smoother and the magazine just falls in, not forced in! I like the fact that Smith, Kimber and probably Spring. ALL guaranteed for life. I will make a video and tell everyone how the action is!
@TheHogger129 Thanks for the heads-up. My local firearms dealer convinced me to go American...Because! Where is the BEST steel produced and manufactured? USA! I learned that Rock Island is made in the Bilaphines. No thank You! I am a retired RN and worked around Filipino Nurses for 25 years. They DROVE ME NUTS! If the nurses are "That" Effin Nervous, then...I mean then what does that say about manufacturing firearms. Probably NOTHING! Just me being a Dope-Bigot! But No Thank You.
Mr.Hickok45..."ONCE" (Like untold Xs) you offer a acute insight & perspective about the Sprg 1911 R.O.! Question: I saw the Kimber Custom II for...HOLD ON! $799 NEW! (Turners Outdoors, So Cal). I traveled to a local gun shop I've made purchases before. They had a "used" Smith & Wesson 1911, Stainless, wood (faux) grips, Dual Slide Cutting for $500. What to do Kimber or S&W? Anyone? The firearms dealer let me shot a box of 45s FREE to try out the S&W. He said that NEVER had ANY S&W RETURNED!
I just got this peace of art ! Nothing like putting 230 grains of lead on target . Love it .but had to paint that black front sight. Life is good with a 1911on the range !!!!!
Hi I plan on buying one of this these pretty soon but I have a hard time finding the correct price for it, so my question is, did you ever find out the true price for it? and also, where is a good place I can find quality .45 magazines?
Mr Hickock, first are you the Gent that was being interviewed by Tom Gresham @ the NRA show?
2nd, I purchased one of these lovely handguns as part of a personal pledge to get a 1911 this year, but like yourself, I have found the black-on-black sights a bit hard to see, what would you do if this were your personal piece?
3rd Am I the only one who actually saw the slugs streaking by when you were shooting at the gong around the 8:00 mark? pretty wild to see them traveling before impact. Thank you.
I built up a 1911 from Springfield in 1999 with the same exact features, except mine has the Bomar sights. Springfield should hire me as a product manager.
@AnthraxPG Friendly (subjective, all the way) advice. I have NEVER heard anything Good about ANY Semi-Auto Taurus. Revolvers are OK, but stay away from the pistols
hickok45. i am ready to buy a 1911 A1. What is your feelings about the Rock Island 1911 Tactical? Price is a big issue and the One I saw and held had a LOT of little extras that Kimber would have at $1200-1500 dollars! The RI is around $500 and solid in my opinion. What do you think? Steve
@hickok45 Very interested on this too!!!- It seems fantastic value for money...but I'm by no means a 1911 expert. I love mine so far (200rds - with one slide lockback failure probably due to cheap USAmagazine). Please review!!!!
@starbucks107 NOW...I am looking at the Dan Wesson 1911s. Shorter 4" barrel, BUT AWESOME! I MEAN BEAUTIFUL FINISH. The ONE problem with this one and all of the 1911s I wanted to buy...They are ALL SOLD OUT! Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot! WTF? Do gun manufacturers KNOW that people WANT TO BUY THEIR PISTOLS?!!! ANYONE?
Hey im fairly knew to the handgun world in that in the past year ive been able to purchase them. Im a bug guy 6'5'' and my hands are larger than the average shooter does this 1911 accomidate?
Looks like the Loaded model without the ambi. Not really impressed with the pistol as something new and different. With that said, I really appreciate all the trouble that Hickok45 goes to in and effort to give us great reviews.
I'm thinkin' that if you "tuned" those targets a bit, you could play "When the Saints Come Marching In" in under 3 magazines. The metallic xylophone target is thus born.
Hickok - I've got a Springfield Target model - uses same sights - and I agree with the black-on-black issue. What have you used in past to "paint" that front sight - or have you? i hate to paint anything on a sight but I need help. Guess my eyes aren't what they used to be...
@DCC350 , With the HD camera we get a small "irregularity" if we go past 16 minutes, so we've gotten to where we typically have stop-restart point somewhere now in most videos. We try to make sure we never do it so that it looks like a "Hickok45 Cover-Up" or something. :-) You know, like I miss the Gong 12 times in a row, stop the camera, and run out there and repaint it. :-)
do you ever let people come out and shoot with you? I live in tn and would have a shit load of fun with a setup like yours!!! What thickness steel do you use for your targets? Hope u see this and reply!!!
Range Officer was the 1911 I chose to purchase to celebrate 100 years. The sight is good for shooting at white paper, but for darker environments/targets I prefer my Glock's sights (of course, I kinda prefer them on paper too >.>)

tdcrane101 5 months ago

Range Officer vs. Ruger SR1911? Which gives you the better bang for the buck? Thanks for the videos...thoroughly enjoy your shooting ability.

Nice video...I am ready to buy another government model and I think this one is gonna be it...thx for the heads up on the front sight too...happy shooting!

I once had a Springer Trophy Match and really regret selling it. I wonder how closely the Range Officer performs for almost half the cost. Like the target sights and the overall look but question that you can have a "competition ready" 1911 for under $1,000
lEgaLiZeVOLVE 6 months ago
@lEgaLiZeVOLVE I had a TRP, which is the same as your trophy match except for night sights, grips, and finish (all bead blast) and sold it like you... regretted it like you. I just bought a RO last week and will tell you I am happy again. It is just as tight and the trigger is one of the best out of box of any production 1911 I've felt. The bushing to slide fit was very tight at first but I worked it smooth while disassembled. The bushing to barred fit is also good and it locks up tight.

where do you live i would love to shoot at that range. looks like north dakota??
MrVenomsk8ter 6 months ago

Any advise?

@Waboom1, I'll be nice since you're obviously new to guns. It IS wise to avoid being a smart alec when the comment is going to reveal mountains of ignorance. :-)
hickok45 7 months ago 74
@Waboom1 those 1911s are made to withstand a hit on a concrete floor .
so a little tab on a wooden table wouldnt do a bit on that ranchofficer not even a scratch.
SuperScalemaster 7 months ago
@Waboom1 The bricks that the metaphorical brick shit house was made out of were actually 1911s. That's why they're so solid, and that's why they're so heavy. You'd be more likely to damage the table setting it down than the gun itself.
pleasuretrip 7 months ago
@Waboom1 All he did was set it down..... its not a electronic device, or anything like that.... its a fine, fine piece of metal hardware.... Great video. thanks for review. Thumbs up once again!!!

The only thing I don't like about this 1911 is the rear sites but then again I want a 1911 for a nightstand or carry gun so I don't need these kind of site. I'd rather have the night sites like the ones that come on the springfiel operator.

thank you very much! looking at 1911s and this helps. Keep rocking hickok45!!
brandobum9 8 months ago

I will make a video and tell everyone how the action is!
starbucks107 9 months ago
@TheHogger129 Thanks for the heads-up. My local firearms dealer convinced me to go American...Because! Where is the BEST steel produced and manufactured? USA! I learned that Rock Island is made in the Bilaphines. No thank You! I am a retired RN and worked around Filipino Nurses for 25 years. They DROVE ME NUTS! If the nurses are "That" Effin Nervous, then...I mean then what does that say about manufacturing firearms. Probably NOTHING! Just me being a Dope-Bigot! But No Thank You.
starbucks107 9 months ago
He said that NEVER had ANY S&W RETURNED!
starbucks107 9 months ago
I always love watching the close ups of when you're shooting the gong. You're able to see the bullet trajectory and it's really neat.

kbent88 10 months ago
Hi I plan on buying one of this these pretty soon but I have a hard time finding the correct price for it, so my question is, did you ever find out the true price for it? and also, where is a good place I can find quality .45 magazines?
281Lee 10 months ago
Mr Hickock, first are you the Gent that was being interviewed by Tom Gresham @ the NRA show?
2nd, I purchased one of these lovely handguns as part of a personal pledge to get a 1911 this year, but like yourself, I have found the black-on-black sights a bit hard to see, what would you do if this were your personal piece?
3rd Am I the only one who actually saw the slugs streaking by when you were shooting at the gong around the 8:00 mark? pretty wild to see them traveling before impact. Thank you.
russellsmith93 10 months ago
I built up a 1911 from Springfield in 1999 with the same exact features, except mine has the Bomar sights. Springfield should hire me as a product manager.

hickok45. i am ready to buy a 1911 A1. What is your feelings about the Rock Island 1911 Tactical? Price is a big issue and the One I saw and held had a LOT of little extras that Kimber would have at $1200-1500 dollars! The RI is around $500 and solid in my opinion. What do you think? Steve
starbucks107 10 months ago 5
@starbucks107, I'm planning on picking up one this week and testing it. I've heard mostly positive things about them.
hickok45 10 months ago 8
@hickok45 Very interested on this too!!!- It seems fantastic value for money...but I'm by no means a 1911 expert. I love mine so far (200rds - with one slide lockback failure probably due to cheap USAmagazine). Please review!!!!

@hickok45 do you prefer the sr1911s trigger or the range officer
TheBassGuitarist1 10 months ago
@starbucks107 NOW...I am looking at the Dan Wesson 1911s. Shorter 4" barrel, BUT AWESOME! I MEAN BEAUTIFUL FINISH. The ONE problem with this one and all of the 1911s I wanted to buy...They are ALL SOLD OUT! Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot! WTF? Do gun manufacturers KNOW that people WANT TO BUY THEIR PISTOLS?!!! ANYONE?

@hickok45 would love to see you play a song as you're shooting those steel plates. maybe the overture from Beethoven's 9th?

BigIceWolf90 11 months ago
Looks like the Loaded model without the ambi. Not really impressed with the pistol as something new and different. With that said, I really appreciate all the trouble that Hickok45 goes to in and effort to give us great reviews.
M4finny 11 months ago
I'm thinkin' that if you "tuned" those targets a bit, you could play "When the Saints Come Marching In" in under 3 magazines. The metallic xylophone target is thus born.
Magnageek 11 months ago
Hickok - I've got a Springfield Target model - uses same sights - and I agree with the black-on-black issue. What have you used in past to "paint" that front sight - or have you? i hate to paint anything on a sight but I need help. Guess my eyes aren't what they used to be...

DCC350 11 months ago
@DCC350 , With the HD camera we get a small "irregularity" if we go past 16 minutes, so we've gotten to where we typically have stop-restart point somewhere now in most videos. We try to make sure we never do it so that it looks like a "Hickok45 Cover-Up" or something. :-) You know, like I miss the Gong 12 times in a row, stop the camera, and run out there and repaint it. :-)
hickok45 11 months ago 7
@hickok45
Speaking of Paint...I really miss the Yellow Paint.
It is easier to see your hits. Just my opinion. I am NOT telling you what to do.
(And you have got to be buying spray paint by the gross...hehe)

I just might have to take the risk of upsetting Mrs Dood.

Then again the ONLY semi auto I would ever consider is a 1911.
Thanks Hickok for the very fun and informative video once again!

Range Officer was the 1911 I chose to purchase to celebrate 100 years. The sight is good for shooting at white paper, but for darker environments/targets I prefer my Glock's sights (of course, I kinda prefer them on paper too >.>)
