Curious, how is the pay done? Like do you get paid extra when you have to unload? I've considered getting into trucking since about 2002 or so. I've contemplated it for a long time due to various reasons. Is there some way to get a feel for how it's like before investing a lot of money into a school?
@oerllikon2 yet i watched it as I thought it might be of some interest from the title, and actually list a few advantages and disadvantages of becoming a truck driver
Not gonna lie this righ here is what made me actually wanna get into the industry. I worked alot of warehouse and dock worker type jobs since i was a freshmen in H.S i always wanted as much money as i could make. I HATED bein on my 3rd shift job(night owl) and gettin a whole trailer left for me to clear DOLO!!! In any of my jobs i NEVER seen a trucker lift nuthin
I always wondered what it was like to be the one to drop the "work" off an be out about my business with no "boss" on my neck. Just
LOVE IT! My boyfriend is a driver and he said the SAME thing about having to unload your trailer... Getting paid to exercise! :-D He's got a SEXY body too! ;-) So I can't complain! LoL!
@DiamndzGirl do u see him alot? beacause i'm thinking about going into the trucking business. but the thing is i wont be seeing family alot. so yeah. just wondering
@bikepeddlar6 Hi! Yes I actually do see him a lot. I had thought I wasn't going to see him much but I do! It is a hard job though and can be dangerous. If you're a young man I do recommend you find a local job and go to school! :-D My boyfriend is young, so he is thinking about coming to work local and going back to school.
@bikepeddlar6 Where you live and the company you go with (even though your options will be limited as a new driver) will play a part in how often your able to get home. After a year you'll have more options to choose from.
Most local jobs will want you to have a year's experience before they will hire you however, that doesn't mean it is impossible to find a local job right out. Just means that it is much less likely that you will be able to find a local job.
Whats a bitch is that when you pull trailers like dry vans reefers and shit most of the time u gotta work. But flat beds and containers/intermodal its an easy ass job
Yeah, I remember this. Tailgating furniture loads is one thing I do not miss. I had to tailgate 20 sleeper couches to a furniture store in Florida. The employees weren't allowed to get in the back of the truck, so it was all me. Had a flu at the time to, it was miserable.
But hey, keep these videos coming man. And God bless you on the road.
Don't touch it if you ain't gettin' paid! I haul carpet and it is 100% no-touch, cuz I don't get paid to unload, I get paid to drive! Great bunch of vids! I may have to make some, you've inspired me!
I like this video! Thanks guy for posting it! I grew up around truckers and am interested in learning the trade. Your video's are great to watch. Take care out there!!
I was up all night driving it there, I've got little interest in unloading the stuff too. My company hauls no touch freight to all but a couple locations. The safety department prefers we just stay the heck out of the trailers and let lumpers handle it. Took me a while to get used to people banging around in my trailer unsupervised, but I got over it. I use load / unload time to get in the bunk and catch a few hours sleep.
Though I usually paid a lumper. Unloading that furniture load would have paid me $70 in 1995 $'s. It only looked like a couple hours work.
I'd unload plastic jugs, egg cartons, foam food trays in a couple of hours, easy stuff. Sometimes 800 cases of Angel Soft, cubed out in a set of high cubes in five hours.
Felt like a tough guy afterward. And nothing like loading in Fresno in August with teh reefer going.
lol, yeah man, i know, i don't enjoy it always either. BUT . . . not enjoying it doesn't negate the benefit! So, it's still all good and you always feel better afterwards anyway.
Guess what though, over here, we don't get paid jack for unloading. Ok, we get $6 dollars a stop, uuh I don't call that pay.
But if I didn't like the whole deal, I'd leave so i'm not complaining, just saying.
It's kinda sad yous guy got $70 in in 1995 and we get so little now. Funny how that works huh?
When I couldn't find a lumper, I'd dread the hell out of it, especially if I knew it was going to be hot, humid, loud and with hostile customers.
$6. Wow.
That's something. We got paid $12.50 drop pay with a set of doubles. That was a 'make and break' - in other words, you broke the set up and put it back together for $12.50. You're right, if I didn't like doubles, I would've quit pulling them.
Be careful out there - you've got a great attitude.
containers are better man and you reallyhave a choice by asking questions before getting hired.
I haul new furniture, I knew I would be unloading when i took the job, in fact it's part of why I took this job.
Most companies know that drivers don't want to touch freight so most of them don't make you unload or load. A lot of them have the option of using a lumper which is usually provided by a 3rd party entity which makes a killing loading and unloading trucks. (Paid more that the driver)
Right on brother, sometimes you need to get in there and move some freight.(plus it is good cardiovascular exercise) And one more thing, the reason why lumpers are bending over the trucking industry and costumers who purchase products then charge a carrier to off load it(which is BS) is simply because they realized how fat and lazy most truckers are...Basically the truckers before had a hand on the back of out head pushing in a attempt to bend us over our fuel tanks.
Fuck that, I take the straps and chains off and then my job requires I stand there and look stupid. I'm a contracted driver and I pick and choose my freight and if it don't pay enough to tarp and won't haul it. As far as sleep, ever night by 10 and I'm up and gone around 8. 500 miles a day and it'll be there before noon. No worries, no hurry
yeah im not too crazy about tailgatn' shit...lol im a lazy fuck! lol naw but seriously ive gone with my grandad a few times and he hauls preassembled kitchen and bath cabinets. spent many a hour helpin him out in that hot ass trailer. neway kew vid keep on truckin.
lol. Like i said man, it's always fun can't front on that but it's always beneficial so that how I keep the drive to do it.
Focused on the results I want in the end ya know. That's the new way we got to think man.
Being proactive will make the difference between health and happiness in the long run.
As a matter of fact success too. Think about it. If exercise is what keeps you healthy enough from getting diseases that cost you an arm and leg and poor quality of life is it not worth doing?
thats the reason why i drive a foodtank!!i hope you get pay per hour and not per mile!! standing two hours or more waiting to unload and the hole time getting no money thats a SH...!!!
try running air freight ,,,,,,youdont have to touch a thing , as long as there on uld's (cookie sheets) as there called ,pulling a roller bed trailer ,,,,the only problem with that is you wont get much sleep
nope ,,,,,,,the heck with fingerprinting a load ,those days are long over , maybe you should have asked them if they would like for you to put it away also
Looks like a day cab... sorry.. you're not a truck driver.. you just drive a truck around town.
