Firstly.. well i think your starting was a little rough and you could improve on that. When the solo comes in, its usually an amazing moment, and its like the prime part of the piece. Your techniques were good but i guess you gotta improve a little on your intonation? other than that its mostly fine:) Cheers dude you're really good:)
This makes me want to kill myself! I've only just got to the stage where I'm technically secure enough to play this piece, and I'm 21! =/ haha, amazing job for an 11 year old!
@TheOtto1151 Thanks for your comment and I want to tell you:
1. I´m 11 on this video, it was in April 2007 and I was born in May 1995 :)
2. I´m starting to learn cello when I was 4 and a half years old and I only practiced one hour or less in this time. now I´m just 15 and I practice between 3 or 5 hours, depending if I have some performance. You can check my other version of this concert when I was jus 14 :)
well, lots of comments mention his lack of facial expression;obvioulsly, he is listening to what he's producing. Let him grow up,he may express then whatever he is expected from evrbdy to xprss. I wish him a brilliant career , if it's what he is dying for.'hope he's got the choice!don't know how it works, whn u're talented;do you have to do what's expected from a person with that talent, or you can become a gardener,a physicist,an astonaut, a salesman if you like? A happy life to you Santiago!
Look at Feuermann who is one of the greatest cellist. He has no body movement and no facial expression. I would prefer this style than those who over act.
I am hopeful Santiago will be one of the greatest.
No he is not!! off course that he is not, I´m his mother, he is a normal boy!!!! he doesn´t like to play with facial expressions, that the way that he plays, you can watch the other videos if you want, he has 34 in this moment in the same count: luisca2007
Santiago... Lo hace muy bien!!... es un gran placer y honor para mi concoerlo, y., en serio... siga con ese poryecto, que yo ce que a a llegar muy lejos...

Why is it so much more 'cool' when a 5-year old plays an advanced piece well then when a 27-year old plays the same piece VERY well? Just because they are child prodigies doesnt make them better than the 27-year old who maybe worked hard to get that good! Not that I'm 27, i'm 15 and playing the Saint-Saens :)
I agree with you, except in the part of the technique, I only think he is too young, so he hasn't lived enough to know what emotions to show, in my opinion is like trying to play blues without knowing what love is like. Still, he'll be an excellent cellist in some years.
do U play cello??? he IS good. just because he doesnt show enough emotion to u doesnt mean that he isnt good enough! he does show emotion and he is amazing. the shifting, the sound and he is in tune
I've just had the privilege of watching and listening to Santiago Canon play this Haydn Concerto, here at the University of Waikato (Hamilton, New Zealand). I'm no afficianado of the fine arts, but this young man (and he is only just 12 years old) has a gift. No matter what his critics say, he's going to go places and we should encourage him along the way. The world is a better place when we are given the opportunity to appreciate talents like this.
dude ur retarted!of course HE tuned it before. u obviously dont play an instrument. he was practicing like crazy b4 stage probably and ALWAYS when ur on stage u check ur tuning!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
First, I am a cellist of 6 years. She could have tuned right before she went on stage. And why didn't she just tune with the orchestra instead of by herself?
im a cellist of like 5 years also. have u ever played with an orchestra? its almost like a tradition to tune on stage. except u usually check. and HE did tune with the orchestra. just not the whole orchestra but the concert master. and HE didnt do it with the whole orchestra because he came in earlier
This is a decent performance, especially for someone so young. Technically it's very strong. However, there's a certain musical maturity his performance lacks that only comes from life experience. So Mr. Cañon, obviously very talented, is off to a very impressive start in his career.
your technique is AMAZING, but the way you play the piece is somewhat dull... i guess what i'm trying to say is that you need to play a little more expressive, but that should come in time. when i was your age i had terrible technique and no sense of expression. Now i'm 16: my technique is still horrible but my my sense of expression has gotten a lot better :P
You play very well. Could you please tell me which edition of the Haydn Concerto you are playing? The International edition by Gevaert/Rose is different. Is this the Henle ed. or Gendron?
Though there is almost no personal expression in the young cellist's playing, his technique is very well tuned for his age (although some stiffness in his right elbow might cause concern later). Once he discovers how to express himself in the music he will likely be a great concert cellist.
You look and sound like a grown man!!! You have no technical problems, and I think you will be one of the greats! I would, however, leave the big concertos for a later moment. Haydn D is very demanding, not just technically. But you will come to this by yourself. Congrats, pal!
terrible orchestra

I think there is only 2 possible solutions for this video
1. You´re not really 11 or
2. you have started playing about 3 years old and practised since then 8 hours a day.
but sry i just can´t believe you´re 11. You look a little like a teen

Even taking the fact of the classical period, the period that this concerto was written in, this performance lacks intensity and conviction.
