Pelé vs. Maradona!!! They played both 21 years: Pelé 3 World Cup (1958,1962,1970); 1281 goals in 1363 games; 97 goals for Brazilian Team in 92 games; Could play and kick with right and left legs. Could score easily with head; Powered by passion. Maradona 1 World Cup (1986); 345 goals in 692 games; 33 goals for Argentina Team in 90 games; Could play and kick only with left leg. Couldn't score with head, so he used the hand; Powered by cocaine.
@garybecca You have a defender behind you 1 second away from getting the ball, another one trying to cover the goal and you have no time to think or decide... ur granny could've scored it? guess she's better than Pele...
It was not even a dummy Pele just did not get there on time if he had he could have poked it in to an empty goal as Mazurkiewicz would not have been able to make a save on it.
Isnt it strange how Pele always does plays like this against a team that is already beaten in a game that was just about over anyway? Brazil was winning 3-1 and this was the last minute of the game when Uruguay were just waiting for the end this in a semifinal where it does not matter by how many goals one looses.
Arguably the greatest soccer play ever and yet it doesn't involve an actual goal or a shot on target. The sheer genius to even work out a dummy on the keeper at that moment is beyond explanation.
@BiffScooter1 Utter bollocks, genius this does not make, How many matches have you seen Pele in, not many by the sound of things. Pele is a myth, thats why you don't see so many examples of the ''greatest'' on youtube.
It's well known that Brazil could have won the worldcup without Pele in 70, his team mates admit as much, in 62 they did win it without him and in 58 he didn't even play in the group stages. He spent most of his career playing against mickey mouse opposition. fact.
@tatuco8 Live--seen Pele play at least 5 times. On TV/video/DVD--maybe 10 more. The reason you don't see many examples is the same reason you don't see many examples of Alfredo Di Stefano's greatness--Tv coverage in the '50s and '60s in those players' prime was rudimentary at best.
So Brazil could have won the World Cup w/o Pele, huh? Pele scored the winning goals vs. Czechoslovakia and Romania. The opener in the Final, too....cont.
@BiffScooter1 Garrincja was younger than Pele, yet there are full highlights of Garrincha's games on youtube and alot more vids. Some show his individual performances and almost every touch in some games.
I'm not impressed by Pele one bit. He played in a state league not a national league until he was 31. When Brazil did get it's NL he only scored 1 goal in 20 games.
Pele was a great athlete but people try and turn him into something he wasn't. A Genius he was not.
@tatuco8 Oh, I see unless someone is on YouTube enough they are not "great" or "genius" like? Oh, well, Stanley Matthews, Leonidas, Lev Yashin, Elias Figueroa...and hundreds more--sorry.
You want to argue statistics? Pele: 92 internationals with Brazil--77 goals. Garrincha: 50 Brazil matches, 12 goals. Garrincha was a fantastic yet troubled player and he should get his due but let's get real. I guess being named Player of the Century by FIFA, France Football and IFFHS is not enough for you.
@BiffScooter1 polls for the most part are opinions and should not be used to judge greatness but since you mentioned it Maradona won FIFA's internet poll taking 53% of the vote to Pele's 18 yet FIFA wanted Pele to get the award so they hand picked journalists for another poll who they were sure would vote for Pele which is what they did so you are right FIFA named Pele player of the century while the fans named Maradona player of the century.
@tatuco8 You're joking about Garrincha, right? I just did a search on YouTube. There are 3,590 results meaning he's in that many videos. Pele...well up pops 74,300 results. You're honestly saying to me there is "alot more vids" of Garrincha? How can anyone take anything you say seriously when you do ZERO research? If you're going to back up all these POVs with "facts" at least get the factual data correct.
Did you not even graduate from college and learn how to debate or use stats?
@tatuco8 A reporter in Brazil said when Garrincha died in 83 "Pele is admired, Garrincha is loved". Pele was so jealous of Garrincha he did not even go to the man's funeral stating some P.R. story that he did not go because people would be asking him for his autograph.
@tatuco8 I agree with you completely as you speak with wisdom unlike some English idiot here who only looks at statistics yet one thing I must tell you. Garrincha was older 7 years older than Pele but apart from that everything you said is true.
@BiffScooter1 Against Chechoslovakia they won 4-1 so clearly his goal was not all the important and against Romania they did not even need to win as even with a loss Brazil would have gone through to the next round and probably still would have been first in the group so again not all that important.
@truvianni It takes all of three seconds to annoy you which is why I'm doing it. Soccer fans are so easy to provoke because these are people who will sit and watch paint dry in the hopes of sliver of action. Simply put--argue all you want on the demerits of Pele vs. Garrincha, Milan vs. Inter because it's vastly more interesting than watching 90 mins of nothingness in the hopes someone actually puts more than, say, ten shots per team on goal.
...go check out Boys From Brazil video and see how many goals Pele set up. Watch that Carlos Alberto screamer in the Final. Who sets him up on a plattter? In '58 Pele was 17 years old. Hey, Ronaldo was 17 w/ Brazil in '94 and didn't get in a single match. Pele did play vs. USSR in '58 in group stages. Scored in QF, hat trick in SF and 2 in the Final so who gives a toss if he only played once in group stages? cont.
@BiffScooter1Pele played in 58 because the starter Mazzola was having problems with his team mates despite having scored 2 goals against Austria in Brazil's first game. 2) by the time C. Alberto scored his "screamer" the game was over Brazil was already winning 3-1 with 4 minutes left in the game and Italy was just waiting for the game to end.3) The goals Pele scored against France and Sweden just about anybody could have scored he was unmarked and shoting from inside the penalty box
@truvianni Yeah, so? You know what? There are thousands of players who don't take their opportunities when a teammate gets hurt. Pele did. Yes, a park league player could lob a ball over a defender and come round the other side to half volley past a keeper ...as long as it was inside the penalty box.
Great points. You win the argument. Give yourself a brownie star.
Look, people, this thread is dying. I don't care anymore. Let's move on from the '70s with the European Champs Final tomorrow.
@BiffScooter1 It is not really a matter of winning or loosing but simply presenting different points of view and nothing else but I do agree that we should move on to tomorrow Barca vs Man U Final though I wish it were AC Milan in the final but that is another story. The future is where it is at and lets also think about next year's Euro in Poland and Ukraine.
@truvianni OK, but I assume you mean "losing." You must not be Italian. It's just "Milan." For example, no one goes around saying Liverpool FC. The AC is total nonsense that non-Italians use to differentiate the two. It's just "Milan" and "Inter" not AC Milan and Inter Milan when you talk about them even if the dopey English think it is.
@BiffScooter1 actually I am Italian American and I speak Italian fluently as I have lived in Italy for many years though I currently make Poland my home but I still travel to Italy often so I do not need you to tell me how the teams are called because I know it perfectly well. I just wanted to make it clear that it AC and not Inter actually a Milan fan is called "milanista" and an Inter fan is called "Interista" so spare me your lessons which I could give you
@truvianni So you're a mongrel like all us immigrants whose parents or grandparents or great grandparents left for economic reasons. Good on ya. I could care less about the rossoneri or nerazzuri. But thanks very much for Monica Bellucci, Phil and Tony Esposito, your food and Da Vinci's inventions. As far as your opera, political and soccer betting scandals, state of your stadia, ultras, trains...uh not so much. Arriverderci!
@BiffScooter1 And you are the white trash that was left behind after the Roman empire pulled out. Your empire was just a bunch of pirates going out to far places of the earth and plundering. As for English women they are such a bunch of dogs that even the Spice Hags and Di are considered attractive. As for Mongrels even that drunken pig Churchill’s mother was American.
@truvianni remember the language is english not american matey. i'll spell yanky how i like. learn how to spell grey, colour, defence etc etc properly and get back to me greaseball
@truvianni You want a badge for speaking Italian fluently. I speak Japanese fluently. So what? It would be like me saying the proper way to say karaoke is "care-ah-OK" rather than "kerry-okie." Did I say "Milan" referred to the fan? I said fans of AC MIlan call their team "Milan," Mr. United Nations.
@BiffScooter1 I know what you said and if you could read between the lines you would understand that I do not need you to tell me anything about Milan but I guess like most limies you are just to stupid to understand so I leave you to your ignorance and will not waste any more of my time with you and I know how to say Karaoke in Japanese which means “empty orchestra”
@BiffScooter1 You must be a limie, You English spend millions on the game of football yet the truth is you can not play the game so you worship Brazil even that bitch queen you have gave Pele some bs title maybe she also gave him head. You English should be realistic 1 world cup title won very controversially in 66 and a 4th place in 90 and you never even made it to a Euro final proves you are failures in the game of football.
@truvianni Not a limey, dumbass. Can you not figure out that just by your moniker alone I knew you were of Italian descent and that's why I'm winding you up about Milan. Assuming everyone who writes English is English is about something I expect from people with zero education.
@BiffScooter1 If you are talking about Pele’s goal in the final against Sweden he did not lob anybody he bumped in to a defender the ball bounced in the air and happened to land conveniently for him so he could kick the ball just a whole 5 meters from the Swedish goal and did not even go around this defender My 80 year old mother could scored a goal like that and I wont even say what a true football great like Maradona could have done.
@truvianni Typical of an Italian male--all mama's boys, you lot. Yeah, sarcasm aside, given you come from the land where goals go to die, how would you even known what a goal is?
Mickey Mouse opposition. So World Cup QFs, SFs and F he faced Mickey Mouse opposition? In the '62 Intercontinental Cup (precursor to today's World Club Cup) vs. European Cup champions Benfica he scores a hat trick in a 5-2 win and Santos are world champions. Those are facts. Anyway, I'm up for a debate but only from people who actually do some research and can back up their POV.
Week in week out Pele played against mediocre opposition. He very rarely played against the creame of the criop because he spent most of his career playing in a state league.
By the way the 1000 goals is a myth. He scored 643 goals in offical matches. What was added onto that were friendly's and testamonials and probably kickabouts he had in the slumbs and at school. Pathetic.
@tatuco8 This was Pele's fault? He was declared a national treasure by the Brazilian govt. so he could not be transferred abroad to "your" superior European leagues. There was NO national league in Brazil at that time. Again obviously Pele's fault by your logic.
Yeah, I'm not arguing over his goal total, dude, and speaking of pathetic, use spellcheck for crying out loud otherwise you come across as an uneducated doofus (i.e., "friendlies," "testimonials, "slums").
@tatuco8 I agree completely as how can one argue with the facts, statistics can be manipulated but not the facts and dont forget he scored goals for the Cosmos in the very competitive North American Soccer League with all those wonderful players American players at the time.
@tatuco8 Another thing few people know about is that when he scored 3 goals against France the French were playing without a central defender for most of the game so he was unmarked. This defender injured himself early and in those days teams were not allowed to substitute during the game and talk of setting up goals it was Garrincha who set up the first in way that my grandmother could have scored.
@randwan The person you are arguing with is probably stupid, but saying this was better than anything Maradona did is ridiculous. Maradona is one of the few true rivals to Pele's crown. Many would say he is better. This was brilliant, but Maradona had many brilliant plays as well. For me, Pele's the greatest ever striker. Maradona may be the greatest attacking midfielder. They were different, but both brilliant.
@gringofreestyler im not saying maradona wasnt amazing. of course he was.
i just genuinely think that this skill goes beyond sublime footballing ability and actually takes pure genius. to have the presence of mind to think that this would fool the goalkeeper is genius. think about how stupid he would have looked if it hadnt come off...
i dont see why it is ridiculous. this is peles best moment of skill and i think its better than maradonas best moment of skill. its a matter of opinion.
@randwan This isn't Pele's best moment of skill. His best moment of skill was probably the double juggle over two players heads and scoring. That was absolutely unreal. Maradona definitely had more skillful moments as well like the goal against England in 86(not the hand of God).
@gringofreestyler Subjective. For me, great skill isn't always about incredible technique. It can also be moments of ingenious improvisation, such as this.
@randwan The original statement I replied to was saying that this play was better than any play Maradona ever did. I have never said it wasn't an ingenious attempt. I'm saying that Maradona has done plays better than this particular one. I also said Pele has too. I am just finding it hard to believe how some of you think this is the best footballing player ever.
@gringofreestyler This isn't really getting us anywhere. We just disagree on this piece of skill. Which is fine.
I take issue with your last sentence though.
Some of us think he is the best football player ever, along with 50% of the football world. Its pretty much because... he is the best football player ever.
I cannot understand how you fail to comprehend that people rate Pele the best ever. He has the record for the most goals scored, won three world cups, and just about anybody who played against him or watched hm play rate hm as the best. It is impossible to fully compare players of different generations but it is still easy to see why people call him the best. Maradona may be a better player but it is all a matter of opinion and I personally agree that Pele is the best.
@randwan Best moment of skill?? A swerve around a goal keeper and then misses an open net... Get real.
Pele is overrated, he couldn't do what Messi does even against mediorce oposion and Pele never had the talent that Garrincha had. There is a reason there are not so many vids on youtube on Pele.
Pele is a myth. How many 90 minutes have you seen him play??
@tatuco8 The reason the Brazilian government preferred Pele to Garrincha was because Pele was younger while Garrincha not only was older but had one leg shorter than the other. It is even rumored that Garrincha’s mother was his sister who had been raped by her father which in a Catholic country like Brazil is not the kind of image they want yet football wise he was just as good if not better.
@truvianni Are you in love with Garrincha? Who cares? It's irrelevant to whether Pele is a genius or not. You don't need to cut down one player to prove the other. Both were geniuses. End of freakin' story,
@tatuco8 it wasnt even a swerve he did not get to the ball because if he had he could have just poked it in to the open goal. What happened is he ran for the ball didnt get there on time but the ball slowed down and he saw that it did and then decided to go after. It you look at the video closely he did not even know where the ball was when he went past Mazurkiewics because he he had he wouldnt have run so far past the goalkeeper but would have turned sooner.
@creamer175 Maradona didn't use performance enhancing drugs. He used recreational drugs to feel good. It is illegal, because the drugs are illegal by government laws, not how it can help you on the pitch. He was a great football, because of his technique and vision, not drugs. Saying that is just ignorance.
i can't think of any other moment in football that exemplifies genius more than the very video we are commenting on. maradona was the best dribbler ever (although messi will be considered alongside him some day) but when we're talking about overall football genius pele wins hands down for me.
I'm going to be controversial and say this is incredibly over-rated. If he'd just take a touch he would have been past the keeper and been able to roll it into the net. Instead the dummy puts him far too wide and ends up in a miss. It was totally counter-productive.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ATHL3TE If he couldn't get a touch then it's not a dummy and not a piece of skill at all. He merely left it because he had no other choice. Either way it's overrated.
@Fugsy07 You're missing the point. Rather than just trying to score a simple goal, Pele tried something special. Ok, he didn't score, but it wasn't something magical that even today, no one has come close to replicating!!
I've watched this so many times, and I still cant see what else Pele could have done different to score here.
I think Pele was unlucky not to score 7 or 8 goals in 1970, instead of 4.

You English should be realistic 1 world cup title won very controversially in 66 and a 4th place in 90 and you never even made it to a Euro final proves you are failures in the game of football.
truvianni 9 months ago
@truvianni Not a limey, dumbass. Can you not figure out that just by your moniker alone I knew you were of Italian descent and that's why I'm winding you up about Milan. Assuming everyone who writes English is English is about something I expect from people with zero education.
BiffScooter1 9 months ago
@BiffScooter1 well where ever you are from it is not important to me
truvianni 9 months ago
@BiffScooter1 If you are talking about Pele’s goal in the final against Sweden he did not lob anybody he bumped in to a defender the ball bounced in the air and happened to land conveniently for him so he could kick the ball just a whole 5 meters from the Swedish goal and did not even go around this defender My 80 year old mother could scored a goal like that and I wont even say what a true football great like Maradona could have done.
truvianni 9 months ago
@truvianni Typical of an Italian male--all mama's boys, you lot. Yeah, sarcasm aside, given you come from the land where goals go to die, how would you even known what a goal is?
BiffScooter1 9 months ago
Mickey Mouse opposition. So World Cup QFs, SFs and F he faced Mickey Mouse opposition? In the '62 Intercontinental Cup (precursor to today's World Club Cup) vs. European Cup champions Benfica he scores a hat trick in a 5-2 win and Santos are world champions. Those are facts. Anyway, I'm up for a debate but only from people who actually do some research and can back up their POV.
BiffScooter1 9 months ago
@BiffScooter1
Pathetic.
tatuco8 9 months ago
@tatuco8 This was Pele's fault? He was declared a national treasure by the Brazilian govt. so he could not be transferred abroad to "your" superior European leagues. There was NO national league in Brazil at that time. Again obviously Pele's fault by your logic.
Yeah, I'm not arguing over his goal total, dude, and speaking of pathetic, use spellcheck for crying out loud otherwise you come across as an uneducated doofus (i.e., "friendlies," "testimonials, "slums").
BiffScooter1 9 months ago
@tatuco8 I agree completely as how can one argue with the facts, statistics can be manipulated but not the facts and dont forget he scored goals for the Cosmos in the very competitive North American Soccer League with all those wonderful players American players at the time.
truvianni 9 months ago
@tatuco8 Another thing few people know about is that when he scored 3 goals against France the French were playing without a central defender for most of the game so he was unmarked. This defender injured himself early and in those days teams were not allowed to substitute during the game and talk of setting up goals it was Garrincha who set up the first in way that my grandmother could have scored.
truvianni 9 months ago
I can´t believe, some people are blind...overrated? man, by improvisation, he totally owned the goalkeeper without touching the ball! thats genius.
octaviocgsa 1 year ago
if my opinion means nothing why are you arguing with me?
this single bit of skill is still better than anything maradona ever did.
by your argument the greatest player is the one who scores the most goals?
in that case its pele again.
randwan 1 year ago
@randwan The person you are arguing with is probably stupid, but saying this was better than anything Maradona did is ridiculous. Maradona is one of the few true rivals to Pele's crown. Many would say he is better. This was brilliant, but Maradona had many brilliant plays as well. For me, Pele's the greatest ever striker. Maradona may be the greatest attacking midfielder. They were different, but both brilliant.
gringofreestyler 1 year ago
@gringofreestyler im not saying maradona wasnt amazing. of course he was.
i just genuinely think that this skill goes beyond sublime footballing ability and actually takes pure genius. to have the presence of mind to think that this would fool the goalkeeper is genius. think about how stupid he would have looked if it hadnt come off...
i dont see why it is ridiculous. this is peles best moment of skill and i think its better than maradonas best moment of skill. its a matter of opinion.
randwan 1 year ago
@randwan This isn't Pele's best moment of skill. His best moment of skill was probably the double juggle over two players heads and scoring. That was absolutely unreal. Maradona definitely had more skillful moments as well like the goal against England in 86(not the hand of God).
gringofreestyler 1 year ago
@gringofreestyler Subjective. For me, great skill isn't always about incredible technique. It can also be moments of ingenious improvisation, such as this.
randwan 1 year ago
@randwan The original statement I replied to was saying that this play was better than any play Maradona ever did. I have never said it wasn't an ingenious attempt. I'm saying that Maradona has done plays better than this particular one. I also said Pele has too. I am just finding it hard to believe how some of you think this is the best footballing player ever.
gringofreestyler 1 year ago
@gringofreestyler This isn't really getting us anywhere. We just disagree on this piece of skill. Which is fine.
I take issue with your last sentence though.
Some of us think he is the best football player ever, along with 50% of the football world. Its pretty much because... he is the best football player ever.
randwan 1 year ago
@gringofreestyler
1ngjoxsh 1 year ago 3
@randwan Best moment of skill?? A swerve around a goal keeper and then misses an open net... Get real.
Pele is overrated, he couldn't do what Messi does even against mediorce oposion and Pele never had the talent that Garrincha had. There is a reason there are not so many vids on youtube on Pele.
Pele is a myth. How many 90 minutes have you seen him play??
tatuco8 9 months ago
@tatuco8 The reason the Brazilian government preferred Pele to Garrincha was because Pele was younger while Garrincha not only was older but had one leg shorter than the other. It is even rumored that Garrincha’s mother was his sister who had been raped by her father which in a Catholic country like Brazil is not the kind of image they want yet football wise he was just as good if not better.
truvianni 9 months ago
@truvianni Are you in love with Garrincha? Who cares? It's irrelevant to whether Pele is a genius or not. You don't need to cut down one player to prove the other. Both were geniuses. End of freakin' story,
BiffScooter1 9 months ago
@BiffScooter1 Wisdom at last and I do agree that they were both greats
truvianni 9 months ago
@tatuco8 it wasnt even a swerve he did not get to the ball because if he had he could have just poked it in to the open goal. What happened is he ran for the ball didnt get there on time but the ball slowed down and he saw that it did and then decided to go after. It you look at the video closely he did not even know where the ball was when he went past Mazurkiewics because he he had he wouldnt have run so far past the goalkeeper but would have turned sooner.
truvianni 9 months ago
@gringofreestyler Maradona is brilliant with the help of drug.
creamer175 1 year ago
@creamer175 Maradona didn't use performance enhancing drugs. He used recreational drugs to feel good. It is illegal, because the drugs are illegal by government laws, not how it can help you on the pitch. He was a great football, because of his technique and vision, not drugs. Saying that is just ignorance.
gringofreestyler 1 year ago
@gringofreestyler
Actually, he used ephedrine which raises concentration. And cocaine can also raise performances as it increases energy and altertness.
tibiasuckness 11 months ago
@tibiasuckness You find ephedrine in over the counter cough medicines and cocaine dulls the senses over time....

@randwan No Maradona > Pele. He was smart when it came to football. He's abilities exceeded Pele's
survivorfan1234 1 year ago
@survivorfan1234 "he was smart when it came to football"
i can't think of any other moment in football that exemplifies genius more than the very video we are commenting on. maradona was the best dribbler ever (although messi will be considered alongside him some day) but when we're talking about overall football genius pele wins hands down for me.
randwan 1 year ago 2
@randwan your opinion means nothing. Pele's brilliance couldn't even get him a goal.
survivorfan1234 1 year ago
@survivorfan1234 He'd also have run over to the touchline, snorted that, faked a Hand of God and then backheeled it into the net.

harmonicj 1 year ago 5
I'm going to be controversial and say this is incredibly over-rated. If he'd just take a touch he would have been past the keeper and been able to roll it into the net. Instead the dummy puts him far too wide and ends up in a miss. It was totally counter-productive.
Fugsy07 1 year ago
@Fugsy07 Doesn't look like he could get a touch to the ball to me
ATHL3TE 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
@ATHL3TE If he couldn't get a touch then it's not a dummy and not a piece of skill at all. He merely left it because he had no other choice. Either way it's overrated.
Fugsy07 1 year ago
@Fugsy07 Skill is not always in the feet :) He just outsmarted the goalkeeper.
ahandzhiev 1 year ago
@Fugsy07 .overrated is what defines most modern footballers who cant do anything in the world cup. c ronaldo, messi come to mind?
987costa 1 year ago
@Fugsy07 You're missing the point. Rather than just trying to score a simple goal, Pele tried something special. Ok, he didn't score, but it wasn't something magical that even today, no one has come close to replicating!!
trick4242 1 year ago 12
I think it's better that he did miss. It gives more prominence to the move ie. the dummy on the keeper.
