Max paid for funeral by telogramming Jewish boy he had saved during the war that had become a hotel owner in America. Max asked him to stump up the cost of the funeral and to re-imbuirse him shorly after. News of Max paying for the funeral and saving the live of this Jewish man and his brother only came out when it became known just how Max had paid for the funeral. Max and Joe were friends - but only well after their ring carreers. Max visited Joe at some point maybe 5 or 10 years after Joe had both left the ring. When Max arrived, Joe was on the golf course. He waited 2 or 3 hours for Joe to come back. When oe returned his wife greeted him at the door and said Max Schmelling was waiting for him. Joe dropped his clubs. The two became friends, and as others have pointed out, Max tried to help Joe through the hard times and would pay for his funeral.

the truth of the matter is that both Schmeling and Louis were exploited by Politicians and businessmen in their own countries who then droped them in the gutter whne they no longer needed them. Schmeling managed to climb back with a successful new career, Joe unfortunately did not

Max didn't have his money taken from him. Sure Hitler (and particularly Goebels) had it in for him and, after being sent on what amounted to a suicide mission in Crete, he had nothing. (Money was in property in Dresden - and wiped out with the city being flattened.) Joe had the IRS acting like a leach till President Kennedy and 3rd wife (solicitor) managed to change that. (By then the mental damage had been done.)

Yes, it was a shame. Had the IRS had a conscience they would have written the debt off shortly after Joe retired. Joe's advisors should also be ashamed of their actions.

Yes I agree, these days the boxeers management would have checked with the revenue first to see if tax was payable and if so then payed it first before donating the rest to the charity. But lots of fighters seem to have bad advisers, even now

Exactly... he not only supported him financially, he even carried Louis's coffin at the funeral. They were good friends and visited each other regularly. I reckon, when you train hard everyday, you have respect for those who do that, too. The achievement of being up there with the best is what counts.
