Max paid for funeral by telogramming Jewish boy he had saved during the war that had become a hotel owner in America. Max asked him to stump up the cost of the funeral and to re-imbuirse him shorly after. News of Max paying for the funeral and saving the live of this Jewish man and his brother only came out when it became known just how Max had paid for the funeral. Those were just two of the many lives Max saved. He was quite the man. World Champion, businessman, humanitarian. RIP.
Max and Joe were friends - but only well after their ring carreers. Max visited Joe at some point maybe 5 or 10 years after Joe had both left the ring. When Max arrived, Joe was on the golf course. He waited 2 or 3 hours for Joe to come back. When oe returned his wife greeted him at the door and said Max Schmelling was waiting for him. Joe dropped his clubs. The two became friends, and as others have pointed out, Max tried to help Joe through the hard times and would pay for his funeral.
the truth of the matter is that both Schmeling and Louis were exploited by Politicians and businessmen in their own countries who then droped them in the gutter whne they no longer needed them. Schmeling managed to climb back with a successful new career, Joe unfortunately did not
Max didn't have his money taken from him. Sure Hitler (and particularly Goebels) had it in for him and, after being sent on what amounted to a suicide mission in Crete, he had nothing. (Money was in property in Dresden - and wiped out with the city being flattened.) Joe had the IRS acting like a leach till President Kennedy and 3rd wife (solicitor) managed to change that. (By then the mental damage had been done.)
Yes, it was a shame. Had the IRS had a conscience they would have written the debt off shortly after Joe retired. Joe's advisors should also be ashamed of their actions.
Yes I agree, these days the boxeers management would have checked with the revenue first to see if tax was payable and if so then payed it first before donating the rest to the charity. But lots of fighters seem to have bad advisers, even now
it´s true he was german and meet hitler.hitler himself invited MAX to dinners and be in favor of nazi political party but he never answers those invitations.becouse of that and joe´s defeat he they sent him to the war as a parachutist and he survive he is a truly hero so try not to be stupid and learn about him before say bad thins.
I heard that when he was champ he came back to germany and he was a star there having right to spent money and visit the expessives hotels and thinks like that. well the fact is that he kept three jewish in his hotel room eventhought two guards were in the room door he bribe them in order to kept then in silent and then he took the jewish to usa.that is true because i heard in a biaography of him and wan of those jewish told the storie.
that is very true he was a man of honor. eventhugh joe louis was is enemy in combat they were good friends max gave to joe Economic Assistance when joe was bankruptcy
Max paid food for his family medicines and medical assistance for joe his funeral to.
jego: That is the most dumbest remark i have ever heard. "MAX WANTED TO LOSE FIGHT WITH LOUIS" Louis trained very hard to beat Scmelling. Please educate yourself before you make stupid posts.
@dheschete what happened in the first one??? Lucky right??? Knocking his ass all over the ring and finally putting him out of his misery in the 12th....
That's right. Famous black fighters like Archie Moore, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson have admired Schmeling and the other way round. And Max and Jesse Owens liked each other too.
Exactly... he not only supported him financially, he even carried Louis's coffin at the funeral. They were good friends and visited each other regularly. I reckon, when you train hard everyday, you have respect for those who do that, too. The achievement of being up there with the best is what counts.
You're talking out of your ass. Schmeling and Louis became great friends after they both retired. Schmeling paid for Louis' funeral. By far, he's the most misunderstood boxer in history.
I like your video clip and have rated it as awesome. Please view my clip of some 1930's boxing tobacco cards. They include Max Schmeling, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey , Jack Johnson and many more.
i am related to young stribling... just felt like putting that in there ha

its just ridiculous to think joe defeated him in first round...max just wanted to lose that fight to avoid been nazi propaganda

I completely disagree. Louis tagged Schemling with some of the hardest punches I've ever seen. One ever broke a bone in his back.

I am a fan of both boxers. Both were great. But Louis whooped Schmeling's ass in the second fight. Schmeling admitted it many times.

number1: Do your homework, he loved Joe Louis and when Louis was broke he sent Louis money. Max loved all athletes and respected white and black.

Did some research on Schmeling, he was never a nazi and hide young jewish children from the nazis. Max was a great human being.
burtwiseman 4 years ago
He wasn't a Nazi but he hated Nigros. He is a great boxer who knocked out Joe Louis for the first time.
