Actually these are harder than regular squats. you can't lean forward here due to the chrome bars preventing this. Leaning forward can engage your back muscles to lift the weight and this is a no no.
Notice he slides against the the chrome poles if he didn't he would hit the safety racks. the machine is a safety system with guides which make it much harder imo.
The box is in place so he dosen't go too far down and engage his glutes and hamstrings.

Can someone explain to me - are machine squats better than doing them with free weights? Does the box help?
