Wasn't Falling Into Infinity planned to be a double album, but the label guys said 'no way'? Imagine if Metropolis pt 2 ended up as an instrumental on FII instead of being expanded to the SFAM album we know and love today? Would have made DT history very different.
I imagine that it would be very difficult to use the section from that starts at about 0:20 but i would, I think it's actually the best part of this piece if music and it's shame it's never gonna any further than this.
Someone down there said Moore is a prick. He quit a band when they were at the top of their game. He gave up everything to move to some small country and play keys to movies in a coffee shop. I can totally admire that. Call him a prick but that dude is waaay cooler than anyone else in DT.
@KornSOAD There's also a bit in a guitar solo in The Odyssey that sounds like the beginning of the guitar solo from Under A Glass Moon. I'm such a geek.
At around 3:50 or so, I dunno who here would agree with me, but the odd licks that Petrucci is playing sound like some of the licks during the extended guitar soloin Beyond This Life at Budokan. Anyone hear what I mean?
listening to the whole demo version makes me feel like i'm listening to SFAM sections with 'When Dream And Day Unite" parts. It's good they made the song into an entire album. I don't think the parts that did not make it into the final cut of the album are necessary to use.
I think Jordan Rudess did his part in polishing it.
Rudess has done wonders for this band. I hate the people who dis him and say there is no way he could possibly fill the shoes for Moore... I really think if Moore were to come back he wouldn't be able to take Rudess' spot.
@KyleJPie10 no one could take Jordan's spot. The guys in this band have all helped in the evolution of music during the 90's. They still write great music, but the progressive genre was successfully brought back and updated by DT. That's how far it goes.
Rudess on the other hand, is one that's been taking music and leading it for the last 20 years, and still going forward.
@KyleJPie10 I love DT with Moore. That is real Dream Theatre to me but you are right, if Moore came back he wouldn't be able to play Rudesses parts...
the song is good, but I prefer to make the record, Jordan Rudess contribute much to the sound of SFAM, who could forget the crazy keyboard just beyond this life and the sound of indu home,
I am very very glad that this song was too long for F I I. And therefore was reworked. As clever as it is....... SFAM is probly the cleverest musical project ever undertaken. I Wish my demos sounds this good.
Yeah, well SFAM is a 'concept album', which means there is a storyline or theme that runs throughout the entire album. Got that? Storylines are usually told thru the LYRICS. They must've realized when they were putting the concept together they couldn't fit any vocals onto this music. As anyone with half an ear can realize. Have you even listened to this??

Definitely better than most of the instrumental parts of SFAM, which are just wankfests. Jordan did a great thing though; the piano in One Last time is great.

They cut it because it wouldn't fit in with the flow of the album. Also, they made SFAM a few years after cutting this demo, so they had moved on from their frame of mind then. Oh, and they had to put lyrics in there somewhere. Plus they had a new keyboard player, who was musically more accomplished and contributed his own ideas and themes. Apart from ALL that, yes, they should have crowbarred this mess in SFAM somehow. Moron.

Funny the label guys probably heard this and were like "Faawk Nooo!" Lucky for us they produced "SFaM" themselves

Can anyone imagine if they had to play this live? It seems like it would be impossible for even Dream Theater.

They couldn't even be compared.
Two different styles, it doesn't even matter who's the better keyboardist...
And they changed the whole style of song writing since he's in the band... Not for the bad, nor the worse...
And anyways, Kevin would've never came back anyways. :)

This is a great song, and i would love to hear this be played as one off kinda thing on a DVD or something but overall the album is worth much more.
0:21- 3:00 is something which i would loved for them to use on the album cause it's fantastic

I know that part is so excellent! I have no idea why they cut it! It has so much intensity, it reminds me of castlevania for some weird reason haha

yeah, i agree with you, if SFAM wouldn't exist, the second part of metropolis would be any other DT's pretty large and amazing song
however SFAM is one of their best albums and it's a big change in teir sound and heaviness
