  • does drawin on the computer slow down your skill progression?

  • four years ? Well, my experience with tablet is that I'm quite inaqurate in terms of drawing clear and nice shapes - which is obviously not your problematic area...

I lvoe it. Did you draw before those 4 years of working with tablet ?

  • great drawing and one where we get the chance to see how you start a drawing.

I see you don't use aid lines. I always start with some lines that outline the whole shape which i can later erase but those lines always help me when it comes down to find the right proportions.... ifyaknowwhatimean :)

  • great tutorial, great advice, keep it up Matt!

  • love the damn line quality man

  • thanks for the video. :)

  • gODi want a cintiq ... XD I start with the eyes and use little dots step by step

  • Well, I also think it's matter of practice: the more you practice, the more your eye get used to the forms and in one point you don't need the proportion lines anymore.

  • nvm... I just skipped the 2/3 part of the movie... I should see the whole and then comment

  • everywhere I been, everyone teaches me to start portraits with proportions, but you can start from everywhere you like, and this is confusing me... isn't it easier to make mistakes if you haven't marked some basic proportions... like.. line of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, where the hair begins, basic forms etc... and then go to detail. Not criticizing your methods, you're master to me, but it confuses me that you start from details , not from basics...

  • I think its like this: if you are unsure how to go about proportions, you do the guide lines and stuff, and if you are like this guy, very good at proportions, you can just start wherever you want. I need a bit of guide lines myself, it all depends on how much I want it to look like the model ;)

  • Isn't that style called point to point drawing? It definitely looks like a tougher approach to drawing.

  • Its interesting. For frontal portraits, I do it the second way, and for 3/4 or angled views I always do it the first way.

    Both are nice.

  • Working light to dark. I'm right there with you. Great video!

  • just an amazing video, incredible tips. Thank you so much for sharing your techniques. I like others have learned an incredible amount through your videos!

  • Without any construction lines?

  • construction lines are good for animation, not for realistic portrait in my opinion

  • I've taken so much from your videos, I can easily aspire from your work :D I've even referenced alot of your videos in my college work in england, im trying to incorporate skeletal studies into my work. Think you could do a video on the proportions and scaling of the human skeleton or skull :D

  • Next time I'll realize eye size in proportion to video screen. Gee I've only been doing this for four years now.

  • thanks soo much :D and i would just like to add your vid have been a huge help im going to start taking some classes now and hopfuly I'll be animator :D

  • Thanks for this Matt.
