so 5,000 homes determine how "well" a tv show does? however many it is, its not fair. I dont care what anyone says. 5,000 homes determining over 250,000,000 people isnt enough, at all.
Nielson is so bad it's funny, they have ruined many a show my Jericho included, but heck they make the money and a couple years ago fired all their people and are now out sourced!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yep they be laughing at us all the way to the bank.
If it really is random, how can Nielsen assure that the number of male viewers selected to be monitored mirrors the portion of the overall population that is male, as this video claims?
@sloucho84 I don't understand what you mean by "it doesn't." What doesn't what? This video claims both that Nielson "employs a random sample, where all homes have an equal chance of being selected" (1:00) AND that "this assures the sample mirrors the population according to gender, age, race..." (1:13). One of these has to be untrue, right? It would seem to me that it only assures a *likely approximation* of mirroring the overall population. That or it's not really random.
@agbecker I was answering your question. To your point, it can't be perfectly random. Only people that agree to be part of the sample can be measured.
Really good information on how TV rating work, presented in a fun way! Worth watching for anyone interested in why THEIR favorite show did/ didn't get the ratings it expected!

Nielsen's sample is not random, it is drawn, as they say in the trade, "scientifically."

@agbecker It doesn't. The sample is weighted to mirror the overall population.
