@bishop102 It affects the poor in areas where they have high levels of dioxin still in soil and lakes. Signs tell people to not eat from the lakes but they don't have money for food and still do so. These are hot spots that America left behind and never cleaned up. The poor must live off of the land and nature, but when we taint just that...we took away their right to live a healthy life.

I know for a fact that the troops had no idea that agent orange would effect humans. A friend lf mine was part of the ground crew loading airplanes with the stuff. It came in 55 gallon drums. To show me it was harmless he stuck his whole arm in it and nothing happened, no rash, no effect, We were told it had no effect on humans and many in the military believed that. The point is, we were defending the South against the total war from the North that murdered probably a million S. Vietnamese,

I last saw him 10 years ago at Renaissance festival. He is married with 3 heathy children. That is the quandry, no direct causality from scientific data. I will not purchase any Vietnamese food products. I was a big consumer of Vietnamese food, I love it and eat it several times a week. Vietnam sends 700 million tons of rice to Philipines every year laced with Dioxin. No thank you very much, no shrimp, fish, rice sticks, fish sauce etc, are all off the menu unless I can purchase from Thailand.

All of the dangers of dioxin were discovered in mid-70's. All they knew before that was that they could kill plants very fast, it was a tactical maneuver to eliminate all of the jungles so the enemy couldn't hide anywhere.

@bishop102 It affects the poor in areas where they have high levels of dioxin still in soil and lakes. Signs tell people to not eat from the lakes but they don't have money for food and still do so. These are hot spots that America left behind and never cleaned up. The poor must live off of the land and nature, but when we taint just that...we took away their right to live a healthy life.

This is why people should read the book "War is a Racket" by Smedley Butler who earned two US Congressional Medal of Honor and retired as a US Marine Corps general. The US is not the only to blame as this entry depicts. The North Vietnamese leaders with their Vietcong also where horrible. Pol Pot in Cambodia is a great example of justifiable war just like North Korea, Iran, and other countries with evil men.

Why do people not want to hear the facts. The US was unaware of the Dioxin contamination of some batches of AO. However even so, Vietnam produces vast quantities of dioxin and furans and so has been warned by UN health organizations.The leading culprits are their main fuel low quality hand mined coal for heating, cooking, smelting and electric production. AO was sprayed in unpopulated areas and has log since sedimented out. It takes the body 7 years to rid dioxin in the body. AO was 50 years.

Vietnam war started in 1935 when Ho Chi Minh started warring against the French, then Japanese, French again, then Laos, Cambodia, South Vietnam, US entered the picture in 1965, we were out in 1973. HCM's fSoviet communism was total and without compassion for any other people. Until the communists are out of power in VN you cannot trust anything they say or do. US had arranged for 3 billion for Vietnam peace dividend for North and South peaceful resolution. VN war ended in 1984 against china.

My father suffered from a weird jungle fungus in his ears from a Shell Hole in WW2. I came back with a Weird Vietnam virus that mimicked malaria. It took 10 years for my body to beat it, I received no recognition for this virus. Except for VA hospitalization.. Every war brings unintended consequences.. OUr nations job is to take car of our own period.

Currently Dioxin in the environment in Vietnam does not come from Agent Orange it comes from household use of poor quality coal abundant in Vietnam.
Check EPA's guidelines for how Dioxin enters the environment poor quality coal mining and burning is the number 1 means. Dioxin was a contaminate in Agent Orange it was not an intended ingrediant of AO.
VN use poor quality coal for home heating and cooking. This is how Dioxin enters the VNb environment and the VN government knows this.

Dioxin was not an ingrediant in Agant Orange it was an accidental reaction in some produced Agent Orange. Many companies including many in Europe and India got contracts for Agent Orange. Those companies that had poor quality control allowed reactions to take place that produced Dioxin it was never an intended ingrediant.

I feel no responsibility for the suffering in Vietnam. The North started the war and sustained it through everything we did to win. They won so now they have to take responsibility and they want to whine about it! Vietnam can go to hell as far as I am concerned. They earned every bit of hell!

Oh stop it! North Vietnam was clearly the aggressor in the Vietnam war. Soviet and Chinese troops served in the war also the Chinese in the South and Soviet pilots and missle antiaircraft batteries. The North Vietnamese had to go south in order to engage Americans. The North Vietnamese are godless communists and earned the pain they now feel. They live in a bombed out cesspool. Sop acting like the US won the war, North Vietnam did. What's the matter, victory isn't all that?

@edwinombac Yes, we can help them rebuild and pay off our debts to them and everyone else we owe, we are still in the middle east TAKING what we need instead of negotiating some sort of barter to give something and get something back, like idk.......Clothes? Food? Water? And in exchange we can have oil (not all of it mind you) and peace and good relations with them so we can do the same with everyone making a new world (a better one) for everyone.

Are you ashamed of the country that tried to stop that kind of communist horror? Look at where communism was allowed to run rampant: Soviet Union, China, Cambodia -- how many dead? 80 million? I know for a fact that the troops had no idea that agent orange would effect humans. A friend lf mine was part of the ground crew loading airplanes with the stuff. It came in 55 gallon drums. To show me it was harmless he stuck his whole arm in it and nothing happened, no rash, no effect, We were told it had no effect on humans and many in the military believed that. The point is, we were defending the South against the total war from the North that murdered probably a million S. Vietnamese,

Zzz, did anything happen health-wise to your friend later on after he put his arm in the substance? From what I've learned, it seems dioxin's effects show up in the generation after those exposed, apparently due to the genetic damage (and resulting damaged sex cells.)

I last saw him 10 years ago at Renaissance festival. He is married with 3 heathy children. That is the quandry, no direct causality from scientific data. I will not purchase any Vietnamese food products. I was a big consumer of Vietnamese food, I love it and eat it several times a week. Vietnam sends 700 million tons of rice to Philipines every year laced with Dioxin. No thank you very much, no shrimp, fish, rice sticks, fish sauce etc, are all off the menu unless I can purchase from Thailand.

Well mate, heres more incentive. Our country is making the same mistake in the Persian Gulf right now through the use of Depleted Uranium munitions used in just about every combat vehicle we have deployed there. If you can stomach it, maybe you should look it up. Its already affecting the citizens of Iraq and Veterans in a similar manner to the way Agent Orange has affected Vietnam.

I don't think they knew all of the dangers of Agent Orange, but it wouldn't surprise me if they used it anyway.
All of the dangers of dioxin were discovered in mid-70's. All they knew before that was that they could kill plants very fast, it was a tactical maneuver to eliminate all of the jungles so the enemy couldn't hide anywhere.
But still, the U.S. is respnsible for this, and they should pay and support vietnamese families who have suffered through this.

Dioxin was not an ingrediant of AO it was a sometimes contaminant that was spread in the hinter regions of Vietnam, not in populated areas. Current dioxin poisoning is heavy in densely populated areas where they use low quality coal for energy uses. That is the source of dioxin poisoning, Vietnam knows this but blames US for monetary reasons. Fuck You, fuck vietnam.
