@produKtNZ I did this, the drive started to beep so i got it back in the original casing with all data deleted :) Though the disk was not broken :) And i backed up the most important files :P But i didnät work to use it as an internal drive :S
did he said that you get a 500gb External Hard Drive take out the desktop hard drive and use it to replace a smaller harddive with a bigger harddrive you took out of the External Hard Drive and reinstall window into
nno he cant because the laptop HDD has a smaller connector but he said that only if the external drive had that type of drive in it would work with it.....you could do it only if the external box has the same connection since they make them small or some are big ok and the big ones usually are normal connectors andreally small ones usually use laptop HDD
what is the correct way to turn an external hd off? do you just switch it off just like a normal unit or do you have to shut it down like you would if you were turning your cpu off?
i have a question about how to install a external hard drive to my pc.i have in my pc 200gb but i have and 80gb maxtor 7200.i am not sure where the jumper will go to the jumper. i did not get a jumper into my jumper
i have a amd compaq an i just need more space
to add some files and games to the external drive please help me sir. sgt6 out.
Such a n00b comment. External is only a tiny bit slower than internal. And it is so much more convenient than internal as it can be moved around between PCs easily.
Just need a USB port and thats all for an external drive. This means a reduced risk of damaging the drive due to bad handling (like the guy on this video) or static.
And what if the PC doesn't have a SATA port? Or, what if the PC is already running?
BTW most computers these days still come with an IDE connector on the motherboard and IF you are lucky - a free IDE connector 'wire' to run to it. But trying to connect a SATA HDD to a non-SATA system is impossible without replacing the motherboard.
HAY DIMMBO THIS IS NOT How to Add Space to and External Hard Drive AS LISTED , IT`S JUST REPLACING A EXTERNAL HDD WITH A BIGER ONE, NOT ADDING MORE SPACE AT ALL.
Ok captian Caps Lock, Your just to retarded to understand.. You cannot add sectors to an existing hard drive, therefore you change it for a bigger one.
I have a hdd from my old desktop pc. I couldn't log on anymore cause it was saying i had a damaged or corrupted file in the windows32 folder.. I couldn't fix it, the pc doesn't boot up properly due to damaged IDE connector on the motherboard. I got a new desktop pc, I wanna recover the files from the hdd but can't seem to because the files were in folders on the desktop and not in other locations of the hard drive. Is there hope for me to recover those folders on the desktop?
sure! Take the hard drive that is in the broken computer, put it in an external hard drive enclosure, and plug that into a working computer. With access to the hard drive you can hunt around for whatever files you want to save.
Well, first you need go to the drive with Explorer and see if it shows up. If it doesn't then the drive is probably broken. If it does then open that up, and (I'm assuming you has Windows XP on the old machine) open "Documents and Settings", then open the folder that has the same name as your username on the old computer, then open the Desktop folder. Note that the documents folder is in there too.
Just so you know, im running windows vista on the new pc.. But im not sure i know the first step though.. The hard drive is fine cuz i can access other stuff on it but those folders that were on the desktop root of the machine when it was working. How do i open up the hdd with explorer?
In any case, I'm no "noob", though I feel that anyone who uses the term "noob" in serious conversation (as opposed to in a joking context) must have serious social problems.
Ignore those people. I'm really glad you and others with time to spare are creating instructional videos for the public to see. I've got a collection of MyBooks. One went dead. I've been searching YouTube for a helpful video like yours so I might recover my lost data. My warrantee expires in 2 days, but I don't need a new drive - I need my tax data (without spending big $ on recovery). I think I'll try ripping my drive apart. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

slaterking1000 3 years ago
it's not an SATA Port, its an IDE Port. If you had a SATA Port inside the computer, you couldnt connect that HDD haha.

He's got a completely valid point though. The title of the thread is wrong. It should be "how to add a larger drive to an enclosure".
So I'm revoking your -1 and giving him a +1 :)

You click Start, then Computer, and then you double-click on the icon that represents the old hard drive.

That was the first thing i did, and when i click on the desktop folder, it says empty..
