so my college professor is making me do my research project on this story..
i'm actually like really glad you posted this video up because now i have a better visual idea of what the story is about. and i think i should talk about the light because i noticed how in this story the water kept talking about the lighting in the room and also at the end when the other waiter asks him about the lighting...
Hemingway wanted things lean so I tried to avoid making the light stand for anything in particular. Of course the light is symbolic, of life, of company, of hope, but it might impede your understanding of the whole if you try to reduce it to a single thing. At the end, the waiter means, I think, the place is not quite right, all the elements are not present. Always looking for perfection...
@pfhastie i know that the light is not the only symbol. but my professor is telling us to go into detail with everything. i do understand where you're coming from and you're right. but my main focus isn't mainly on the light. it's on other parts as well such as the old mans life. his suicide back ground. the young waitress and how he's an impatient person because he wants to get home to his wife. there are a lot to write about i just couldn't figure out the light.
Well, it's great short story, but not too long and lots to pick over. Some people suggest it's about the three stages of life. Best of luck with your project. BTW there's no waitress!
@pfhastie omg that's right the story said they were waiters! and i never took stages of life into consideration. it didn't occur to my mind right away to think about the young and the old, but thank you so much for telling me this. honestly it truly is helping me! and thank you.(:
@pfhastie sorry when I read the story in the book I thought the barman was in the cafe where the old waiter worked. just realized he went to a different bar!
@drumaboy200 Perfectly understandable as the way the story is told from the point the first waiter leaves is more subjective and less clear than the first part with the old man.
I've been reading this short story for a college class, and with this I can really see the story and understand it better. It's a really good adaptation. Great work.
@izaprod Thanks for your kind words. As re copyright, I did in fact get in touch with the Hemingway Institute prior to making the film, but they required several thousands pounds and since the entire budget stretched to little more than a couple of hundred pounds - aside from the equipment, which I saved up for over many years - this made securing the copyright impossible, thus why I have no outlet for distribution now save YouTube and suchlike.
Amazing adoptation! Thank you very much, visual adaptation really helps a lot and you guys did a wonderful job. Just out of curiosity, what was the actors' accent?
I found this very helpful in showing me just what the story was meant to represent. It truly is a beautiful representation of it all, and once more I thank you for having created it.

The film was made in Glasgow, Scotland, although it almost looks like Eastern Europe. Thanks for the support, it always means something.
