Elaine was the original Evita back in 1978. Madonna is a great artist but she will always be a bleak copy when it comes to Evita. Her voice is better for pop than musicals. EP IS EP!!
I'm a huge Elaine Paige fan and all I can say is her interpretation of this lovely song written for the movie is sung far, far better than Madonna. The pity is that Elaine should have done the movie version. Madonna doesn't hold a candle to Elaine or even Patti Lapone who did the NY version of Evita and is the person I actually saw back in 1980. Thank you youtube for giving us the pleasure of looking and listening to Elaine, she's just the best!

What a cheek for Ms. Paige to perform this on national television before the film had even been released. It was as if she was bitter about not being cast in the lead role and thus tried to upstage Madonna.
But here, Ms.Paige makes such a shoddy job of it; turning an emotional swansong into a trite sounding lullaby.
Anyone looking for the *definitive* version should watch Madonna's '97 Oscar performance; it will give you tingles up and down your spine.
Too right - only Madonna sings this song with the emotion that was intended for it. I think it was a cheek for Elaine Paige to sing it, especiallt since she verbally attacked Madonna back in 1997, saying that she could have done a better job, but then Elaine had to eat humble pie and apologise to Madonna when she saw the success of the movie.
I'm not out for blood because I love Elaine, but this performance is nothing special. She has a gorgeous voice, but there's something about it that is simply functional - lacking any emotion or fire - much like her performance in the Original London Cast album of Evita. Simply put, nothing special. She may have played the character on stage first, but she certainly didn't "cement" or immortalize the role in the way that Patti did.
Sheesh, a person has to "kick back" & relax once in a while, they can't always knock the house down with majestic Grand Canyon Vocal Suites! (figuratively speaking). It's good that she shows another side of her, & shows that she's multi-faceted & not just a one dimensional singer! She's already proven she can bring the house down, so why does she have to do that all the time??? I liked this song - & without any doubt, I like this singer-vocalist-artist! Susan & Elaine are both great artists!
Joseebus didnt say that she wasn't any good, she just isnt as good as usual and its not good to kick back and relax when on tv to A LOT of people, she should always be at her best. I think she is an absolutely FANTASTIC singer, but this just isn't her at her best.

This version is plain and lacklustre. Elaine may be a good singer but her version of this song can never match Madonna's version. Incidently, 'You Must Love Me was written especially for Madonna for the movie Evita. You Must Love Me is an emotional song which should touch the listener - Elaine fails to do this. Elaine - look at Madonna's performance of this song at the Oscars and take note!
Just think she shows more entusiasm in her concerts when she sings jazz and swing music!
Was just wondering if she maybe is "forced" to keep singing these songs or maybe lacks confidence in trying something new?
Have seen her in some concerts and it seems to me (without knowing her!)that she enjoys it much more singing jazz and swing. But it has also been very clear that the audience respons much more when she sings musical songs.Greets Tine
Yes I think you have a good point there, having seen her live 3 times myself. I do prefer the showtunes I must admit. Then again she did gain a reputation and primarily an interpreter of the works of Lloyd Webber, Rice and the style of music that goes with it.
So serious. People are perfectly entitled to leave a criticism about a performance on this site. Personal comments take the fun factor out of it. Get over yourself, sad..very sad.

I think it a cheek for Elaine to sing this song after the way she attacked Madonna when she was chosen to play Evita in the film. Elaine said she could have done a better job (with those looks Elaine I doubt it!).
She may be the original stage Evita but not on Screen - that is Madonna. Elaine's version of You Must Love Me (which was especially written for Madonna) lacks depth, sincerity and emotion.
Okay go ahead and boo me, but I thought that was way to slow and the gitaur should have been replaced with violins and cellos. Okay I also have to say that her voice just isn't right.
Ms. Paige is immortal. She gives life to this (excellent) song ... I only wish I'd have heard her sing it in 1978 - when she originated the role of "Evita" in the first place ... She is First Chair in a Choir of Angels ... and this song is their anthem.
Isn't it a bit wierd that when she heard they had added a song to Evita , I'm sure she said it was unecessary and spoilt the screen version , then she ends up singing it herself. If you're gonna call Madonna , note how Elaine never quite gets that full close up due to the HEAVY make-up. Madonna does sing it live, at the oscars.
I agree with Tullik. I loved her voice a few years ago and think probably her voice sounded best in the late 80s to mid-90s. Of course, by the late 90s the upper range had gone, as you'd expect as a woman matures, but these days there's no depth to the voice and she can't do even the big belty notes anyway.
Elaine herself has said she'd much rather have her youthful voice back, and I can understand why... I think at one point she had the worlds most beautiful voice, but it hasn't matured very well...I still admire Elaine a lot as a person and performer, but she should stick to acting and "Broadway Baby"- kind of songs where you don't have to sound beautiful. This isn't her worst moment, but I must admit; sometimes listening to her new album makes me a bit embarrased..
I don't agree with that.Of course her voice matured as she got older. That's what happens. But I prefer her version of Memory on the Cats dvd as opposed to the Original London Cast cd.But god, it's not like she's young anymore! If I can still sing at all when I am Elaine's age, I color myself lucky.
Elaine Paige is singing this concert style. This song was added for the movie and didn't exist when Elaine played Evita. I adore Madonna, but as far as playing Eva Peron is concerned, Patti LuPone (original Broadway) and Elaine Paige (original London) are in their own class above all else. I feel horrible for anyone's who played the role after these two women.
Elena Rogers' performance in the London revival that has just ended was the best Evita i have ever seen! She manages to bring the songs to a whole new level, she moves effortlessly from the naive young Eva to a manipulating older Eva. You forget that Eva Peron is dead and start believing that shes right in front of you on the stage.
You know, I had to get used to Elena Roger. Over some time, she grew on me. She's very different from the Patti LuPone class for this role. I'm a Flight Attendant for American, so I took advantage of a chance to see her in this show. She was good, but didn't strike me naturally. Why is the show over already? EVITA on Broadway lasted for far longer under LuPone/Ackerman style of the role.
I was shocked when i saw they were ending it after only a one year run!
I find it strange that you say you had to get used to her though, she instantly became Evita for me when i saw her, i dont know whether it was because of her natural Argentine accent or just the energy she brought to the role. I didn't really like LuPone's Eva but each to their own i guess !
Elena Roger was definitely a kick ass dancer! I especially loved the choreography from "What's New, Buenos Aires." The part where she goes, "I get out here!.." I saw so many heads flinch when that foot went in the air. (You can find her doing that all over youtube.)
I don't know. I guess for me, vocals are my primary focus in shows. I mean, Patti LuPone's Don't Cry For Me Argentina was a worldwide smash hit when it was released. Especially the second "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" verse in her recording. That's superfamous over here. Ackerman had to reproduce that same style when Patti bowed out to other commitments to meet audience expectations.
why is everyone moaning? shes not singing it as part of a show, shes singing it as a song on its own, shes not eva peron here. plus shes fantastic as always!!!
How can u say this is good. It has no meaning atall, shes singing a piece of theatre which is telling a story like a nursey rhyme! She has no connection to the text atall which makes it highly ironic that she is singing "Things that i'm longing to say!"
Theres also no vocal dynamics in it, she sings the whole thing on one level.... she used to be amazing in her day, where has all her stage craft gone, surely people cant just loose it?
@lindafan05 i want the interview too :( i know i'm like five years too late but you know haha and i love her singing shes just amazing i love her more than words can say to be honest (: <3 xxxx <3 xxxx

Theres also no vocal dynamics in it, she sings the whole thing on one level.... she used to be amazing in her day, where has all her stage craft gone, surely people cant just loose it?
