sorry if this sounds ignorant but what does the -06 of 25-06 and 30-06 mean? also curious about the -08 on .308 and 7mm08, What does this stand for? the width of the cartridge in comparison to the bullet?
Kind of hard to explain. The eaiest way is the first part....25-, 30-, 7mm...etc.....is the bullet itself. The 06 and 08 is more about the case itself. Example....you can take a .308 case....neck it down to fit a 7mm bullet, giving you a 7mm-08. And the same taking a 30-06 and making it 25-06. Same case, different neck size to accomodate a bigger/smaller bullet.
The spine wasn't even touched. Theres that magic spot on a deer. The way i do it is take your broadside deer....break the deer into thirds from top of the back to the bottom of the chest. Three equal chunks....put your crosshairs right where the bottom and middle pieces meet and hold right against the shoulder. If you use good bullets the deer will do a faceplant. If not, then oh well your deer will run 20 yards and crash into a tree.
I use a Savage 30-06 for deer here in Missouri, I find it has quite a bit of versatility, I can load heavy around 180g to punch through some brush if need be or, if i'm hunting our fields i'll go down to 150g to reach out there a bit. Always gotta sight in after changing loads though.
Or for the best of both worlds.....just use the 165's. I tohught about buying a 30-06 but I just bought a 6.5x55.......and I also want a 257 Weatherby mag and I'd also like to get a 375 H+H. I'm gonna be friggin broke.
Very nice shot bro, my father had always taught me to make a quick clean kill. So far i have had only one deer run off on me, my father also taught me how to track a wounded animal and we found it about 200 yards away, the rest just drop in their tracks like this one did. That's the first rule of hunting make 100% sure that the shot is gonna make a clean, guaranteed kill. I agree with the orange as well, it's law in Missouri but, even if it wasn't I would still wear it.

You'd have to make pals with someone who shoots. Not many places I know of where you can shoot for free. Ask around to some hunting stores is your best bet.

Thats the way it always (most of the time) is. Only eceptions are big bodied bucks and black bears that can still bolt for short distances. Still dead within 10 seconds so good enough for me.
