Let's put the whole war injury thing to rest. It was probably an invention of Liam Clancy's to introduce the song at a concert. I had a chance to ask Michael Smith about it last night. He created the characters. Any back story about the characters didn't come from him. It's a song about frailties of old age, and unconditional love.
I don't remember where I got that information. Perhaps you are right. I seem to recall the german bombardment of Roterdam but that may have been WW2. Thanks for listening and commenting
As I understand it, Michael's sister was dating a Dutchman, or somebody nicknamed "The Dutchman," and Michael wrote this song about it. Not as romantic as a story about an injured soldier. His sister's name is Margaret.
I didn't knew the song before I heard you singing this. After that I heard a few versions of it and I wanted to play it in my way. I didn't do it, but the song is in my brain and I like to hear your version and the version of ichingiching. You play and sing it very well
ichingiching posted before I did and I think I saw his version before I learned the song. I used to play it in D but switched to G when I saw a couple other versions of it on youtube. Thanks for commenting.
Charsal, this is incredibly beautiful. The picking is so soothing and engaging. Your lyrics are delivered with much reverence and respect. Thank you. Liz
I love this song, and you performed it beautifully, with real tenderness. I thought I knew my Steve Goodman tunes, and I was sure he wrote this one. You taught me something! I look forward to hearing to more of your music.
Funny that you should comment on this now. I just finished telling my son how I play it over the phone, not an hour ago. There is a Michael Smith version of this on youtube. Let me know if you have difficulty finding it.
As I age I realize what a lovely love song this is.
Man, listen to you pick that song...What a BEAUTIFUL soothing voice you have....get into the mic and let it be heard...I have to tell my husband that too...You've got a lot to say brother and it sounds GREAT!!! I've never heard this song before, but I LOVE it...I'm Dutch...circa 1624...Keep em' coming!!
I do like your stlye, and i would like to thank you for subscribing to vides, because that made me check you out, and wath a find. Love this song by the way.
Hey man this is just what I like to hear, it sounds very much like a don mcClean tune. The guitar you've got sounds beautiful and the singing and playing is really plesant to listen to. Love it. You're a very good guitarist.
Thanks for being so kind. I used to have a goal to pick "Castles in the Air" by Don McLean. I believe that to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. But I can't quite figure it out. The guitar is a Martin D 28
Nice version. As I have heard the story, Michael Smith's sister had dated a Dutchman, so he wrote the song. Not as interesting as the WW1 soldier story. Michael's sister is named Margaret.
I've always loved this song..I have an old Steve Goodman record album with this song on it..I like your heartfelt cover and your great guitar picking : )
Excellent....you have a very unique voice....I really enjoyed this. :)

Beautifull song, very well done!
But about your explanation of the song: this must be wrong, because the Netherlands didn't fight in WW1...
