I feel like yeah, the SR 16 does sound super Midi, but if you run it through an effects processor (KP3, pedal loop, etc.) you can get some pretty wicked sounds out of it.
To anyone who needs a manual...just call alesis and they will send you a downloadable one via your email...i bought this used off craigslist for 40 bucks...use if for looping beats with a roland keyboard
does anyone know what kind of drum machine I would want to get for cheap to get a harsher, more electronic sound? ala dubstep? Or can i just get any machine and use a computer to mess with the sound?
I have an sr-16 in the closet that I haven't touched in years. I'm looking for a badass drum machine since I felt this one was outdated. I'm looking for demos and even the most expensive ones are all GAY as hell! All these stupid electronic beats that you would never use in rock. I have a triton studio for that. I think I'm just going to use the Alesis after hearing this. I only need to somehow change the battery. It won't hold memory anymore and I heard it was a pain in the ass.
@chico280 yeah i want to get a drum machine, but the sounds all seem to be really lame!! i want to create my own, like synth drum sounds! how are you finding the alesis one?? let me know!
@sunnyjim98 His name was Derek, he could outplay every drummer in the school...
Of course, Toby had to stomp on a wee pedal for him to get started... He was also the only black drummer I had ever met, with his rubber buttons and plastic dial.
a great way to get a really full snare sound is to 'double up' the snare (use 2 pads assigned to snare) offset the timing just a hair and detune it very slightly. sounds great recorded that way.
i've been looking up vids on this equipment, but i never see the pads get used. can a person use them, and create his own beats or is it just presets? that's what I need to know before i buy anything like that.
of course you can create your own beats on this. nearly everythings covered in heavy reverb though, use some distortion/delay etc and it sounds pretty good. never found out if there was a step sequencer but i just used the metronome to input.
I bought this machine back in 1991 when it first came out and I can't believe they still sell it today, just shows how great this thing really is, The drum sounds are a little outdated unless that's the sound you are looking for. If you watch old WWE Raw shows from the mid 90's, they used one of the preset patterns for the drum part in the intro music and I remember hearing other tv music that used this machine, I still have mine, its in the closet along with my Alesis MMT8 sequencer.
I program a pretty decent sounding drum set into the keypads, and then when it's time to start recording a beat, it switches to the original set. So I have to start all over again and set the keys to what I want.
Then, when I actually get to record a beat into the machine, the patterns are completely different from what I played.
I follow the tempo precisely, but it still formats it to play off-time.
Is there a way I can set it to just record EXACTLY what I'm playing?
it's coz of quantization. i don't use it much. if you make a complicated drum pattern, quantization'll fuck it up and think it's correcting you. sometimes, that works, but if you have the wrong setting, it'll just screw ya up. basically, turn it off if you have good timing anyway.

Yeah dude.. I'm a drummer too, and this sound is awesome! gotta take drum machines for what they are. don't worry, if you're a good drummer, your job is still safe.
i think its cool and a bit of fun not all of can access real drums .. i just want a lil drum machine to jam with my nord lead 2 !! and i love 80s sounds (seeing i was born then) so i think this is the right machine ? hmmm
I'm thinking about getting this but i have a question. can you reverb customized drum beats on it in case u wanted them to sound more electronic or just stranger?
when you want that sound you can do one of two things.. you can scour pawn shops and flea markets for little 80's drum machines like dr550 and stuff which is fine if you love searching for treasure .. but if it's this sound you need.. like RIGHT NOW.. then get one! personally i like the long slow wait that comes from the hunt .. BUT as far as i know they still sell this drum machine at guitar center, and its still the real deal. and i swear i think its not expensive..and it's NEW!
alesis sr16, they make a new model called the sr-18 now that has better sounds but is more expensive, but i think you can still buy sr16's, at least second hand, they've been making these since 1989
thanks for letting me know, Do u know if this drum machine works through guitar and bass amps and if so can you connect them together with an ordinary guitar cable?
are these all factory sounds????! i've got a korg esx but i've kinda been wanting a little mpc drum machine only thing with 80's drum sounds so this would kick ass if they sell it for cheap now

Can someone please reply how can this thing be conected to the Laptop and programs like cubebase? I've heard that it has no such outputs? I think I get it wrong so...
you can connect it via midi , so you can record midi parts into sequencers or any software that accepts midi,(logic, cubase, ableton..you name it) the other way to do it, is to connect the audio output into the audio input of your laptop and record.(provided that you have a soundcard that allows this).
this was first in the market in 1989, so no usb port is available.
Yeah, I couldn't tell if you were asking or stating. I meant to give some examples, i.e. Coil used it a lot on their 90s stuff, Eric Powell from 16 Volt had samples of it on his Ensoniq EPS. Not surprising, since for many years it was the top drum machine.
I believe the gentleman you're speaking of is David Haynes aka Fingers. He has a page on here. If you look up the name, I'm more than certain you'll find him.
i have had the sr- 16 and i lost it in all my stuff and i just found it. but im completly lost and have no idea how to do anything and the manual is too long and confusing.
The SR-16 has been the top selling drum machine for years. Its numbers in sales have shot way past all other models. This puppy was released in like 1989, and it's still being made and sold today. Amazing all those years and still the top seller. It's being replaced now. There's the new Alesis SR-18 that was shown at NAMM.
If u hv to hit the buttons hard you can go into into the menu settings and change it so no matter how hard or soft u hit it it will always be the same.
this is an amazing product. i bought mine in the summer of 1991...and they still sell it ...UNCHANGED!! ...how many products in the electronic world do you know that are unaltered...
well, it's partly because it's a good-sounding product, but it's mostly because Alesis probably doesn't have the money.
Either way, I'm seriously considering one for my setup, as soon as I figure out what works with Vista and what doesn't. I need something to free up some CPU power; I have a fast processor, but I run a lot of heavy-duty VSTi's like Rob Papen Blue and Albino 3.
well, you can change each pad to a specific sound, and they're are many variations for each, so there's like 10 different snares and a few different kick drum sounds. but im not completely sure if theyre are any effects besides some reverb tweakability.
its a great drum machine for "real" sounding stuff. since i do mostly industrial, i dont use it lots, but for the occasional realistic drum part this thing is the best.
Interesting; sounds good. Should've varied more often throughout the video like you did towards the end. I plan on picking one of these up after Christmas. Alesis products are fantastic quality for the price; why I love my Ion so much. Keep up good work. =)
It technically has a few "ambient" kicks, but they're mostly really 80s sounding drums with a lot of reverb. If you're going in the electronica direction I wouldn't recommend the Sr-16 at all.
Hi I was wondering if I can use this machine to make my own beats, because I really want to make my own hip-hop music but don't really know which machine to use. anyone know? please let me know! thanks!!!
Getting used to this bad boy. I bought one used, but the internal battery was dead, so after going through hell to get a new one, I've finally got it up and running and am learning how to use it.
this is and will always be my favorite drum machine. doesn't really have anything flashy, but it's simple to write note-to-note and has a great bass :).
This drum machine was on Alesis line up for a long time. Thanks to this demo vid I didn't know until now that is has got its own distinctive groove something that was missing on HR-16B that I used to have many years ago.Alesis should have upgraded their SR-16 with more drum kit sounds suited for dance music etc.
I think there r more contemporary pads or kits. I used one during the early 90s but i never could figure out how to set up the pads so that I could get that 90s new jack swing or acid jazz feel

Hello Robert Paulsen,
Do you have the manual? Read it carefully and you will find out how to configure your sr-16 so it
will be able to capture your playing precisely.
Read the part about setting the quantization level.
Hope this helps,

it's coz of quantization. i don't use it much. if you make a complicated drum pattern, quantization'll fuck it up and think it's correcting you. sometimes, that works, but if you have the wrong setting, it'll just screw ya up. basically, turn it off if you have good timing anyway.

i have had the sr- 16 and i lost it in all my stuff and i just found it. but im completly lost and have no idea how to do anything and the manual is too long and confusing.

The SR-16 has been the top selling drum machine for years. Its numbers in sales have shot way past all other models. This puppy was released in like 1989, and it's still being made and sold today. Amazing all those years and still the top seller. It's being replaced now. There's the new Alesis SR-18 that was shown at NAMM.

wow i just got mine and i have no clue how to use it, and you have to hit the buttons hard as hell.
anyone know how to do any super fast dbl bass beats?
lumpkin66 4 years ago
If u hv to hit the buttons hard you can go into into the menu settings and change it so no matter how hard or soft u hit it it will always be the same.

this is an amazing product. i bought mine in the summer of 1991...and they still sell it ...UNCHANGED!! ...how many products in the electronic world do you know that are unaltered...

well, it's partly because it's a good-sounding product, but it's mostly because Alesis probably doesn't have the money.
Either way, I'm seriously considering one for my setup, as soon as I figure out what works with Vista and what doesn't. I need something to free up some CPU power; I have a fast processor, but I run a lot of heavy-duty VSTi's like Rob Papen Blue and Albino 3.

does this machine let you edit the samples or add effects?
djzerobuck 4 years ago
indeed it does!
YesCloseToTheEdge 4 years ago
that's great, what effects does it have though?
djzerobuck 4 years ago
well, you can change each pad to a specific sound, and they're are many variations for each, so there's like 10 different snares and a few different kick drum sounds. but im not completely sure if theyre are any effects besides some reverb tweakability.

its a great drum machine for "real" sounding stuff. since i do mostly industrial, i dont use it lots, but for the occasional realistic drum part this thing is the best.

Interesting; sounds good. Should've varied more often throughout the video like you did towards the end. I plan on picking one of these up after Christmas. Alesis products are fantastic quality for the price; why I love my Ion so much. Keep up good work. =)

I don't even know how these things work but this is badass

does this have good electronica settings on it...like for ambient drum sounds
harryburgess99 4 years ago
It technically has a few "ambient" kicks, but they're mostly really 80s sounding drums with a lot of reverb. If you're going in the electronica direction I wouldn't recommend the Sr-16 at all.

gosh like try something new 4 minutes of the same shit.

That was the whole idea of this video.
You couldnt get this type of comedy any more dry if you put a sponge to it.

Getting used to this bad boy. I bought one used, but the internal battery was dead, so after going through hell to get a new one, I've finally got it up and running and am learning how to use it.

I just got one and it is sick as hell dude. I use mine for death metal and grindcore.

this is and will always be my favorite drum machine. doesn't really have anything flashy, but it's simple to write note-to-note and has a great bass :).

BishopsJazz 4 years ago
that was nice but it was really repetitive

Is that worth to buy?
svanari 4 years ago
yeah, i got one to go with my alesis fusion, i don't have a reliable drummer to go everywhere with me, so it was worth it
DLee594 4 years ago
Wait a sec, did you just say reliable drummer?!?!
