I didn't say I pressed ALT+F4 in all games with intros, I didn't say the story is bad, and I didnt' say gameplay is the most important thing (and it isn't, it's actually the story the most important).
I get my information from more than just some forum, and not only about RPG Maker, and from my personal experiences.
I tried loads of games with long intros only to get uninterested by most of them right after, and there's many people out there giving some guidelines based on their experience.
Intros suck in my honest opinion... There's so many bad games made in RPG makers that intros don't rly work into making your games stand out.
Waiting 5 minutes to see if the game is rly worth playing is something I quit doing, cuz between millions of games this is something I don't loose time with. If a game has a long intro I press ALT+F4 and try next game.
RPG maker community websites do tell the same to ppl. Don't make long intros.
If that's your opinion, then that's fine. There are plenty of people who will disagree with you, and probably MORE that will agree than disagree.
When companies market their games, they don't focus on the select few that may not like something, they point to the broad spectrum of people and work with that.
I think long intros builds plot premise, which is exactly what an RPG is for, not a "jump-me-in" scenario. If you want that, play Mario, and stay away from RPG's.
They may know how to navigate the program and implement their own coding, but that doesn't make them experts on story writing.
Just because forums, podcasts, etc. have apparently claimed to dislike long intros doesn't mean that the majority of people that enjoy RPG's such as myself will dislike it.
Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, all of these RPG's have significantly long intros. Don't like it, don't play it.
It's not a matter of liking or disliking, podcasts, conferences, and such events have the purpose of evaluating games for what they succeed and what they don't.
And I'm talking about ppl who played/ tested more RPG maker games in a year than you and me in whole life.
But... I had already forgoten this rofl
Btw, all those games you mention already come with a "name" as a back up. That's a huge advantage over indie RPGs. When you start a FF title you know what you can expect.
Not to mention that most of these "experts" have already actualy completed more games than the biggest percentage of ppl out there. And believe me, completing a game makes a big diference
I have just watched the introduction of this video very careful (I had watched it before in the past). It makes perfect sense for the introduction to be this long because of the deserted ruined emptiness feel that is being conveyed. If you are talking about after that, well I'm sure most players are interested in knowing a little about their main character personalities and a little information on what he/she is like at the start of the game rather then controlling some random person.
While gameplay is the most important aspect in an RPG, story is not far behind it. For BurningFetus game, or the way he has structured it, it makes sense to have an introduction this long.
If any forum disagrees in this condition that it is better to have a shorter introduction, they obviously don't really know much about story aspects in an RPG.
If you pressed alt +f4 at any game that had an introduction and have that attitude, you will never enjoy an RPG that involves a complex story so stick to simple RPG games. That is your personal taste, nothing wrong with it at all and Im sure a lot of others have the same personal taste. But your personal taste doesnt apply to this game.
(Sorry for all these comments BurningFetus, I just wanted to clear the misinformation that seem to be spreading from some forum.....)
well you know i think? FARRR beyond what I'm capable of doing right now, that's for sure. lol. very nice. if only i knew how to get the title screen lookin' so nice. im not very familiar with script. =/
BTW: Don't mind the cliche stuff, with everything out there it's hard to make something moderately original, but you seem like you use that to your advantage. Keep up the good work. :D
You have to have ccoa's UMS (Universal Message Script). If you do, simply put each face file in the "Pictures" folder of your game, and you can show the face using \face[name] in a message command.
when you say message, you mean the text box right? Also where in the message do you put that code? Is it like " \face[name] Hi, how's it going?" or something like that?
This really is a decent intro for an XP project. Good job. However; I don't know much of the story, but from what I do know, your game is extremely cliche' so far. Not that that's a bad thing, but the whole farm deal.... even using Aluxes is killing my interest. Also, I don't know if it's just the video, but it's very laggy.
Awesome shadow effect in the house. That looks rad. P.s. How did you get your pictures to fade? Did you use a script?
I've actually been distressed about completing or moving forward with the project because of the lack of character sets I have. I can scipt and program games with ease, but when it comes to drawing and spriting, I'm not all that great. I can't ever seem to create what I visualize. If someone were to make me some detailed, custom sprites with MATCHING battlers, I would pay them $10 for each character via PayPal, and their name would also be listed at the top of my credit list and in the opening.
This looks pretty good. If you ever need any RMXP resources or anything i'm your guy. Worked on some commercial/non-commercial games so i have lots. Keep it up. Oh and nice use of the Celtic Serenity CD, sounds really good. Happy someone choose to finally use it in their game xD
I got the music from a CD I bought at Wal-Mart, called Celtic Serenity :-D
And the video does lag, but that's because the screen recorder I used was total crap. Don't worry, it's not your connection and it's definitely not my PC lagging it like that ;-)
I noticed alot of scripts that you used here. Such as three picture title script, the UMS and such. Also I assume you made the intro with the text by using pictures and move events with transparency and such right? If I'm not correct me. But this is a really good intro, the feel of it is nice. Good job.
ya the intro kinda reminded me of the intro into Kingdom Hearts where itd say a sentence and then say an important word from it. Game looks awesome! good job
Kick ass video. I just wanna know if you can give me the link to the scripts you use in this game. Also are you planing to release a demo anytime soon?
I don't have a direct link to any one script, but I can tell you that I got most of them from RPG revolution. Just google it, and you'll find them. They have a lot of scripts there. I have a list compiled of all of the authors of the scripts though.
Wow!! This is really good!!! I've been wanting to get RPG Maker XP, but I kinda doubted how good it would be. Now, all my doubts are gone!!! If you can make something like THIS on RPG Maker, I HAVE to get it!!! How long did it take to do this? 'Cause it's really good!!!
All of the graphics you see in the game are what comes with the program, except for the metallic words and fonts, etc. The message boxes are also custom scripted.
But pretty much you can do the same exact things with what the program gives you, it's very user friendly.
Don't be fooled by what people say about RPG Maker VX, it's nowhere near as good as XP.
The intro seems pretty good, I can't say if you story falls into the endless pit of cliche, but i can say that some of the dialogue between Arshes and his mother seemed more to represent as if he was a slave, and the fact did it quickly shifts from day to evening during there short conversation is a bit odd. Maybe make the transition slower?
I didn't notice until after I had made the video that I had set the daylight/night transition too heavy. I meant to set the opening transition into the scene with a darker atmosphere, but accidentally opened it with -0 -0 -0 on the RGB. Lol, trust me, I've already removed this problem.
And I've already cleaned up the dialogue also, I'll post a few updated videos of it soon. :-)
I was about to make a game that would affect NPCs depending in the time of the day.. for example: Change their locations during the night, or put them to sleep, and have the option to get into their houses and steal their stuff from a chest ( whit another lockpicking system "LEFT or RIGHT" ) if you made so many mistakes (meaning noise) they got up and having another justice system ( using gold as penalty ) and depending crime gravity all that is complex but can be done W/O scrpting ;)
Kind of like an Oblvion type deal going on. I've actually been thinking about making a "poor man's Oblivion" for RPG Maker XP, with a lot of the same features.
Haha, definitely not just an average "save the world" quest.
Keeping the classic battle system that came with the system, because honestly, I am a fan of that battle system, and almost EVERYONE uses the same custom battle script, making it not so original after all. Of course I've tweaked the original battle system some :-)

Like I said: That's not what Rpg Maker experts from forums and podcasts recommend. So I'd say probably more ppl disagree with long intros.
At least longer than 1 minute. But ok.

There is no such thing as an "RPG Maker Expert."
They may know how to navigate the program and implement their own coding, but that doesn't make them experts on story writing.

Exactly what forum says this? The information you found about RPG introductions is nonsense to me which is why I am asking.
It completely depends on the game story aspect if it should have a long introduction or not. It's not a case of one is better than the other.
