This is from when the music meant something and you didn't need 20 backup dancers, 12 costume changes and the women hanging their boobs out all over the place.
THIS was the TRUE spirit of the 60's (NOT drugs). People sharing positive music, a parent expressing care & love to a child, no foul, ugly language. MAYBE THIS SPIRIT WILL RETURN IF WE ALL KEEP TRYING. Peace & Love, Bread & Justice.
Today, there are riots in the streets across the Atlantic. This "world filled with sorrow and woe" is probably so because all human beings have an innate need for having their physical needs met, but also for freedom and a sense of fulfillment and, for far too many, they are denied. I just turned off the news and turned on this video. Let us hope, pray and work, however we can, for PEACE in our lifetimes. Best Wishes to ALL.
In that era people from the music world were being framed all the time. Look at all the people Nixon had the FBI spying on. I don't believe a one of them were guilty.
Peter Yarrow served three months for trying to rape a fourteen year old child in 1970. Jimmy Carter pardoned him as Carter was leaving office in 1981. Yarrow was married to a Democrat senator's niece at the time. Mary Travers never condemned Yarrow or his actions. Sorry she's dead, but she's an enabler of a child molester
"whites only" Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock so im sure it wasnt whites only they werent prejudice by any means. Woodstock was in a rural setting and many blacks live in bigger cities and are less likely to have cars to drive to rural setting to see a concert. Thats probably y u dont see many in Woodstock videos. u dont see as many black hippies either, i think they were busy fighting for civil rights.
The 60s' debt to the Black movement has been forgotten by selective memory and selective amnesia. This is a racial and classist issue that needs to be re-membered!
This atmosphere is a legacy of ACTION MASS, wiped out of history and not even on google. P, P & Mary were among those of us learning from South America's Liberation Theology movement, the force after M.L.King that started connecting Civil Rights activists of all colors across the Americas. However, only we of the white middle-class are on the web and in history, since the Hippie movement was co-opted, its subculture turning escapist and elitist. Whites only, as you can see at Woodstock.
I taught myself to play the guitar with Peter Paul and Mary, and New Christie Minstrels...they don't write and perform music like this any more..music now is a "cookie cutter" operation...
Someday in time humankind will eventually manifest a day that "all be well for everyone", its our inborn intention. When we want to feel good, we want to feel god.
OmG, Peter, Paul, Mary and the Smothers' Bros. I grew up listening to these ppl. and I love folk music so much. I miss the peaceful protests songs against the VietNam war which I was vehemently against, as I am with these two we are in. However, that is neither here nor there. I just love their message of peace. RIP, Mary. Thank you guys for the music. I will teach it to my grandchildren.
@om92555 You're so right on that....that's what scares me about this oil disaster..we're ruining a beautiful resource for the next generations, all due to our own greed. We should be ashamed.
@Zswift1 Not only America. I very much regret that they never performed here in Ireland. I have been a PP&M fan since the 60s Now I will never see them!!Sleep in peace, Mary.
My favorite PP&M song also. Reviewing who else you see in the video: Smothers Brothers (it was their show), Jennifer Warnes (in red) and Donovan (blue shirt/grey pants drumming). Audience was less loose, music simple, message clear and all had fun.
PP&M always met the fans after the concert even in recent times. I gave mary a poem I had written for her and she bent down and kissed me. And peter called me his little plowshare for a button I was wearing. I remember when this first aired and have been looking for it for a long time. Bless you for sharing it. This sends shivers up and down my spine.
I remember this like it was yesterday. The Nixon administration wanted so much to get the Smothers Brothers off the air. They threatened the advertisers and the network. Many stations in the south refused to air the show. CBS didn't back down.
Phineas, I agree with you. He also wrote & sang Puff the Magic Dragon. He said "it's about a child's loss of innocence. If I write a song about pot, I will tell you it's about pot!"
I was 16 when this last show aired. The Nixon administration had come into office a few weeks before and used its influence to have this show axed. The network caved to Nixon despite the shows superb ratings. This particular show (episode) blew me away. Ironically, Hee Haw replaced it. I can not think of two programs more dissimilar in their intellectual fire power. So much for a "simpler time".
I love them as well, but let's be real. Life wasn't "simpler". We all tend to have convenient memories about life, but at that time, we were being torn apart over Vietnam; had a rising drug culture; etc. 40 years from now, they'll look back to today as "simpler". We tend to remember only the rosy stuff about the past or maybe the fact things were "simpler" exist because we were younger and didn't have to really deal directly with the non-simpler parts of it. :-)
PPMs music and songs will go on and on even though Mary is now singing in a much better place R.I.P. Mary Travers {Beautiful with a voice like an angel}.
Great video! and one of the Smother Bros looks to be playing a Guild D55!!! Cant get any better. Wow!!!

Really? I don't know, I thought the world of the Fifties looked like a better world to live in, with jobs, nice clean working class neighborhoods, no casinos and strip joints on everycorner to the enrichment of pimps and the defilement of families, just one man's opinion.
Ya 50's were awesome if you were a white suburban middle class man. Then they were awesome! I do have to give kudo's to the entertainment industry back then it was better. Sex wasn't a marketing trick. But socially 50's sucked and were very repressive. And I am a white middle class american male but can't believe what injustice has been done to our civilization in the name of "morality". Maybe now "true" morality will become the mainstream.
Why is it that a Japanese person worth his salt would rather have his eyes pecked out by ravens than walk up to a Chinese and beg for forgiveness for what the ancestors did to each other?
and nothing had a thing to do with you. We didn't use the word "me" back then...this was the Smothers Brothers TV show in the 60's....you don't get to go back and reinvent what you didn't like about society at the time. It was what it was, and this was what it was, a fabulous moment on 60's tv. And it hasn't a damn thing to do with you. Go out and do something meaningful, and shut up.
I never saw this clip before. Thank you very much for posting it. This is what music and television should aspire to be like. God bless you and thank you
I've loved Peter, Paul, & Mary for over 40 years. They were part of the music we listened to at Scout Camp on Staff CQ Duty overnights. I was fortunate enough to be able to see them live on their Reunion Tour several years ago.
Mary, you will be sorely missed. Peter and Paul, I know you are missing her more than any of us can know. Shalom. You will live forever in our hearts.
I'm only 25, but I love all of their performances. RIP Mary, you had perhaps the most beautiful voice in Folk, Rock. You will be missed and never forgotten.
What a great video. Life was so much fun back then. THanks PP&M for always giving us such good music. I hope Mary's family finds peace in their memories when they think of all of us that loved her too, just in a less intimate way.
Mary you were so beautiful and such a great voice. Enjoyed it for such a long time in my life The music will live on forever in our hearts thnxxxxx Well I've got a hammer And I've got a bell And I've got a song to sing All over this land It's the hammer of justice It's the bell of freedom It's the song about love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land You did it Mary thank you Rest in Peace peace to all you Tubers, feeling sad that's Mary's day has done
I am so thankful I was able to see PPM in concert a few times. Those memories will always live in my heart. Their songs have touched the lives of generations. May they continue to live on forever.
It's eerie... I was thinking of this song randomly a couple of days ago, not knowing that Mary would pass a few days later. Thank you for the music, Mary. Sing among the angels.
They been times I wanmted to see Paul & Mary live but never got the chance but their music and Mary will live on forever RIP Mary Travers you were the voice & centre of one of the greatest duos in folk music.
Mary...I had the privlege to meet you in 1987. I can only imagine that the images here are what awaits you in the next world. God Bless You. And Thank You. Your voice and song live on immortally
It is exceptional outstanding songs. They are performiong so nice and no matter how many years had gone, their songs are so good to listen.Powerful,Awesome,Wonderful,Fantastic and......!!
I throw my love beads into the mix, able to unite with all of you who were there during those magical days, united now by the music..which connects us to the hope we felt then, a reminder that the music can bring us together again. Peace
Brings back amazing memories, happy memories, life was so much simpler back then and the music so relevant and it made you want to join in. No need for special effects just good music and real artists that could sing, write and play instruments without a huge entourage.
Thank you for putting this up here. I remember watching it when it was first broadcast, and I remember crying at it's beauty. Almost 40 years later, the effect is still the same. Damn, how I wish we could have held on to that feeling of peace and unity.
well you sure did miss one of the greatest generations of the 20th century-i experienced all of the 60's,and to me i was one of the bset times of my life, and i'm nearly 60 now-
Wow. I have Had this stored in my memory since it was aired. Never saw it again until tonite. One of the most Incredible music events ever on tv. Better than the Hey Jude event. Smothers bros changed t.v. for sure. Thanks.

Peace unto you and the reamining two,

The song is so innocent. I used to listen to this with my brother when we were kids. Major nostalgia here!

Dickie Smothers' voice sounds like Peters quite often.

A great group. You don't hear the kind of harmonies and counter-melodies today which they and the Mitchell Trio used. And the words were powerful.
talma16 2 years ago 3
the Journeymen were awsome w/ the harmonies too. John Phillips didn't play.
And Scott's voice!

This was the best Smothers Brothers show I ever saw.
After 40 years(it doesn't seem that long ago) the message is as powerful and emotional as ever, simply outstanding.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for putting this up here. I remember watching it when it was first broadcast, and I remember crying at it's beauty. Almost 40 years later, the effect is still the same. Damn, how I wish we could have held on to that feeling of peace and unity.

If they are still performing live, be prepared to see more talking than singing, and hear more of their newer songs, rather than the classics.
