I remember as a dead head back in the day, some people didn't like certain songs because they weren't dance-able in the same way, or otherwise seemed to disrupt the flow of the show. Like, we didn't want Jerry to start crying in the first set and slip into a stupor.

If i were dancing my ass off. this song would probably feel like a water break, even though it is beautifully played.

Trey does his thing and we do ours. We don't have to please each other every minute.

yeah i was at alpine valley last saturday and sunday, and hadnt listnened to phish much before that. phish comopletely blew my mind to pieces on saturday, and then on sunday they proceeded to dice it even smaller when they played this.

I recall this show like it was yesterday and though it was my first it was not my last. My buddy passed out during this song and was carried from the front rows to the edge and woke up and said he felt like he was floating, not knowing he was being carried. This is one of the best shows I've ever gone too and an awesome experience too see some of the best music up close.

At 5:55, something haunting happens that is unparalled. No post-hiatus version comes close, besides the extended note Trey just lets slide in the encore on 2-21. But that one has some off notes.

In terms of emotion and what it meant and placement, that is true. And yes, I would not fully know cause I wasn't there unfortunately.  Just speaking in terms of all the jams of this song, including Cypress, and this one tops it.
